The Paideia Proposal was an educational reform movement that began in the 1980s. It was concerned with issues like excessive lecturing in schools and a lack of equal opportunity. The Paideia Group published books outlining the proposal, which called for all students to receive a high-quality, well-rounded education to prepare them for life, work and citizenship. The proposal advocated for three types of teaching - direct instruction, coaching, and Socratic discussion. It also aimed to evaluate students based on their individual abilities rather than in comparison to peers. Supporters saw benefits like improved attendance, skills, curriculum integration and student enjoyment from active learning.
