Picture schedule for a child with autism
1. PICTURE SCHEDULE FOR A CHILD WITH AUTISM
Name of school: Lady Hochoy – Gasparillo
Disability: Autism (student of the autistic class)
Age of student: 16
Academic level: The student who is autistic functions at a standard one level
Presenting challenge:The student has difficulties, transitioning from one activity to the next.
The class teacher Mrs. Linda John Larosa explains that, this student have difficulties
transitioning independently between activities and environments throughout the day. For
example, the student does not know when “free play” has come to an end and when “work time”
begins.
Designing and creating a picture schedule:The class teacher and I agreed that a daily picture
scheduleis a critical component in a structured environment. A visual schedule will tell the
student with autism what activities will occur and in what sequence. The pictures used for the
picture schedule included pictures that showed daily activities such as free play, work time,
lunch time, painting time and home time. These activities are normally the regular daily activities
that the student participates in. However, if any changes have to bemade on a particular day, then
the class teacher will have to prepare the necessary pictures to be included in the schedule.
The picture schedule was designed and created taking into consideration the child‟s strengths and
needs. The picture schedule will be beneficial to the student in the following ways:
Since the child has language comprehension problems the picture schedule will assist him
to understand what is expected of them.
Lessen the anxiety level of the child with autism, and thus reduce the possible occurrence
of challenging behaviors, by providing the structure for the student to organize and
2. predict daily activities. The picture schedules was designed to clarify that activities
happen within a specific time period (e.g., understanding that "break time" is coming, but
after "work time"), and also alert the student to any changes that might occur.
Assist the student in transitioning independently between activities and environments
by telling him where he is to go next.
In addition to the class schedule, the class teacher found that it was necessary for the student
to communicate what was done in school with their parents at home. Therefore, a „home - school
communication form” was created so that the parent can have an insight to what their child did in
school everyday.
