Cody Ralston Community Connections
I did my service learning hours at Lawton Elementary School in Oviedo, Fl. The demographics of the elementary school were pretty average. Just your average school. The demographics of the classroom were pretty normal also.  Location
I spent my 17 total hours working with 4th grade students who mainly had autism. I would work with them at my own desk and help them with the lesson they were learning which included math, social studies, and mostly reading.  After I would help the children, their teacher would reward them by letting them play a board game with me or letting them go to recess. Description of Hours
I noticed a major change in some of the students who never wanted to do their work. The change I saw was that after I had worked with them individually, they actually behaved for the teacher and wanted to more work, asking the teacher for more work. Even the teacher noticed this and said I was a miracle worker. Perceptions
This connected to the coursework because I was working with children who had autism, and we have covered autistic children in this course. Connection to Coursework
My final thoughts after participating with these children are that I had a lot of fun doing this project.  However, I’m not sure if being an exceptional education teacher is the right job for me. Final Thoughts
This project helped me realize that I may not want to be an exceptional education teacher, or even a teacher at all. However, the teacher who let me work in her classroom, Lisa Hoekstra, thought I was very good at working with children and said if I ever needed any more hours, I am more than welcome to come back. I didn’t know if there was an actual hours sheet that we had to print and fill out, and I couldn’t find one on web courses, so I filled out my hours on notebook paper. Community connections

  • 2. I did my service learning hours at Lawton Elementary School in Oviedo, Fl. The demographics of the elementary school were pretty average. Just your average school. The demographics of the classroom were pretty normal also. Location
  • 3. I spent my 17 total hours working with 4th grade students who mainly had autism. I would work with them at my own desk and help them with the lesson they were learning which included math, social studies, and mostly reading. After I would help the children, their teacher would reward them by letting them play a board game with me or letting them go to recess. Description of Hours
  • 4. I noticed a major change in some of the students who never wanted to do their work. The change I saw was that after I had worked with them individually, they actually behaved for the teacher and wanted to more work, asking the teacher for more work. Even the teacher noticed this and said I was a miracle worker. Perceptions
  • 5. This connected to the coursework because I was working with children who had autism, and we have covered autistic children in this course. Connection to Coursework
  • 6. My final thoughts after participating with these children are that I had a lot of fun doing this project. However, I’m not sure if being an exceptional education teacher is the right job for me. Final Thoughts
  • 7. This project helped me realize that I may not want to be an exceptional education teacher, or even a teacher at all. However, the teacher who let me work in her classroom, Lisa Hoekstra, thought I was very good at working with children and said if I ever needed any more hours, I am more than welcome to come back.   • 10. I didn’t know if there was an actual hours sheet that we had to print and fill out, and I couldn’t find one on web courses, so I filled out my hours on notebook paper.
