Cody Ralston completed 17 hours of service learning at Lawton Elementary School working with 4th grade students who had autism. They worked on math, social studies, and reading lessons at Cody's own desk, helping the students individually. After working with the students, some who never wanted to do work before, they behaved better for the teacher and asked for more work. While the experience helped Cody realize they may not want to be an exceptional education teacher, the supervising teacher thought Cody was good with children.

She worked closely with her project facilitator, Mrs. Brandy McConnell, who was formerly her second grade student teacher. Through the process, Alissa learned more about teaching and realized she wanted to pursue a career in law instead. She reflected on personal skills she strengthened like organization, time management, and professional communication. Alissa concluded her presentation by discussing her plans to major in Business Administration at Kennesaw State University to prepare for law school.

On her first day, she felt nostalgic being back in a primary school and excited but nervous to take on teaching. The secondary practicum took place at Colegio Provincial Kloketén in Ushuaia, Argentina. The school was experiencing many challenges including teacher strikes over unfair trials, lack of heating and water services during winter, and late and undisciplined student arrivals. Her lessons focused on communication over grammar using varied activities and digital resources. - 2. I did my service learning hours at Lawton Elementary School in Oviedo, Fl. The demographics of the elementary school were pretty average. Just your average school. The demographics of the classroom were pretty normal also. Location
- 3. I spent my 17 total hours working with 4th grade students who mainly had autism. I would work with them at my own desk and help them with the lesson they were learning which included math, social studies, and mostly reading. After I would help the children, their teacher would reward them by letting them play a board game with me or letting them go to recess. Description of Hours
- 4. I noticed a major change in some of the students who never wanted to do their work. The change I saw was that after I had worked with them individually, they actually behaved for the teacher and wanted to more work, asking the teacher for more work. Even the teacher noticed this and said I was a miracle worker. Perceptions
- 5. This connected to the coursework because I was working with children who had autism, and we have covered autistic children in this course. Connection to Coursework
- 6. My final thoughts after participating with these children are that I had a lot of fun doing this project. However, I’m not sure if being an exceptional education teacher is the right job for me. Final Thoughts
- 7. This project helped me realize that I may not want to be an exceptional education teacher, or even a teacher at all. However, the teacher who let me work in her classroom, Lisa Hoekstra, thought I was very good at working with children and said if I ever needed any more hours, I am more than welcome to come back.
