-The people in the photo are women, appearing to be of various ages, working in a kitchen.

-The technology used and the clothing worn by the women indicate that this photo is old. The
picture is also black and white, confirming its age. Two women in the photo are wearing pants, so we
can estimate that this photo was taken after 1940 when women’s pants became a popular style. I
would guess that the photo was taken during World War II. During this time period, women were
performing many duties because the men were away at war.
What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey?
-I think the photo was trying to say that women were remaining strong without the male
presence in the home. To me, it says that they were relying on each other.
Why is this photograph important to history?
- I think this picture does a lot for the progression of femininity during that time period. It shows
how life was still going on at home versus everything going on with the war.
What questions does this photograph raise?
-I question what they were making and why they were making it. Maybe they were making
dinner. Maybe they were having a bake sale. Who knows?

-I would investigate vintage stoves and see if I could find one that could potentially match the
one in the picture.

-The photo shows Adolf Hitler with a small child and a couple of women in the background.

-The women in the photo are smiling and so is Hitler as he looks upon the small child. Hitler is
shaking the child’s hand. The photo suggests that the young boy is meeting the German leader.
What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey?
-I think the photo is trying to convey a different side of Hitler than we are taught in history. We
view him as this heartless, ruthless man who killed millions of people, but this picture depicts him as
being a kind hearted soul who meets young children and makes old women smile.
Why is this photograph important to history?
-This photo is important because it shows us another side of a man we all deem to be souless.
It also shows us how the people of Germany viewed Hitler differently than we in the United States did
at this time.

-I would ask how this child reacted to meeting Hitler, why the women were smiling, if they were
related to the child, and where and when this picture was taken—pre WWII or after WWII

suggested by the fact that there are multiple people of color being contained by white police officers

- Police officers of that time unjustly targeting black people

- It is an example of unjust police action toward black people

-I think the photographer was trying to convey the excitement of freedom that the statue of
liberty symbolized for foreign people immigrating to our country.

-This photograph depicts an important part of our history as a nation. We are commonly
described as a melting pot of nationalities. Our country was a safe place full of promise for foreign
peoples being opressed in their countries.

3-There are not many boats in the harbor or buildings surrounding the statue, supporting the
conclusion that this photo is old

-There are obvious medical examinations going on. Because the two men are in uniform, it
suggests to us that the men are being inspected for military service
What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey?
-I think the photographer was trying to convey the message that medical examinations for the
military were not thorough. Perhaps this was taken during a draft in which they were in desperate
need of men to fight. There are no tools being used to thoroughly inspect the men.

-This shows that we were in need of men to go and fight in the war.

-Were they preparing for war? What kinds of things were the inspectors looking for?

I would guess that the photo was taken during World War II. During this time period, women were performing many duties because the men were away at war. What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey? -I think the photo was trying to say that women were remaining strong without the male presence in the home. To me, it says that they were relying on each other. Why is this photograph important to history? - I think this picture does a lot for the progression of femininity during that time period. It shows how life was still going on at home versus everything going on with the war. What questions does this photograph raise? -I question what they were making and why they were making it. Maybe they were making dinner. Maybe they were having a bake sale. Who knows? The photo suggests that the young boy is meeting the German leader. What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey? -I think the photo is trying to convey a different side of Hitler than we are taught in history. We view him as this heartless, ruthless man who killed millions of people, but this picture depicts him as being a kind hearted soul who meets young children and makes old women smile. Why is this photograph important to history? -This photo is important because it shows us another side of a man we all deem to be souless. It also shows us how the people of Germany viewed Hitler differently than we in the United States did at this time. Perhaps this was taken during a draft in which they were in desperate need of men to fight. There are no tools being used to thoroughly inspect the men.
