2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

1. Who are the people in the photograph?
Middle aged women who are cooking a meal for a family gathering
What is the situation of the people in the photograph? Provide evidence from the photo
that tells you this.
It appears that there are a lot of dishes that are being cooked, more dishes than what
would be needed for a typical family dinner. Because all 4 women appear to be around
the same age, it obviously isn’t a multiple generation household living together, but a
family gathering/reunion.
What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey?
It may not have a direct purpose as to why the picture was taken. Because sex roles was
not an issue back in the time period, we assume the picture was taken for memories, such
as to put the picture in a family scrap book or picture album.
Why is this photograph important to history?
The picture shows how women typically had the role of doing household chores back in
the day. However, with one woman is wearing pants in the picture. Because women
2. typically wore dresses and skirts back then, we assume because she is wearing pants, this
may be near the start of women becoming more equal to men.
What questions does this photograph raise?
Why is she wearing pants?
When was it taken?
What is being cooked for dinner?
Geographical region?
Write your own caption for the photograph:

Who are the people in the photograph?
Hitler is in the photograph with his German followers
4. What is the situation of the people in the photograph? Provide evidence from the photo
that tells you this.
Hitler is meeting a kid and is trying to show people around how he is a good hearted
person. He simply is working on building his people’s trust and building a relationship
with them. The relationship must be good based on the woman smiling in the
background.
What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey?
The photographer was probably trying to show people that Hitler is not a terrible man,
but a lovable man who wants a connection with his people.
Why is this photograph important to history?
This picture shows another side of Hitler that isn’t always mentioned in history classes
5. What questions does this photograph raise?

came from. Once that is done, I could hopefully figure out the time frame, see where
Germany was at in that point in history, and gather a better understanding of how the
people in the picture saw him.

present. We also see the police taking the man down for standing up for his black
community’s rights as people.
What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey?
The photographer is taking the picture to show how the police are handling the protest at
the time. Also, based on the time period, this was probably taken to show white people
how destructive blacks were and tried to manipulate people to believe there race was
violent.
Why is this photograph important to history?
This picture shows us how we used to treat blacks very poorly and did not give them the
rights a basic human being deserves.
8. What questions does this photograph raise?

How many police dogs does it take to take down one man?
How many times has this group of protestors fought for their rights?
Write your own caption for the photograph:

have no liberties.
What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey?
The photographer was inferring the message “give me liberty, or give me death.”
Why is this photograph important to history?
11. This photograph shows that the black community in the time era had no liberties and very
little rights, while white people trampled all over them and treated like dogs. It is
important because it reminds us that America is the land of the free, where people should
have basic human rights.
What questions does this photograph raise?
Who made the picture?
How close to the blacks revolution is this picture?
Was this taken at the beginning, middle, or end of their fight?
Write your own caption for the photograph:
“Give me liberty, or give me death.”
What could you do to find more information about this photograph?
Find out who made the picture so I could research his or her views on the issue, then I
could better understand the full meaning behind the picture.
12. Based on what you have observed list 3 things you might infer from the photograph
1- Death is better than little rights and no liberty
2- This time era was very rough for the black community
3- Liberty and freedom comes at a cost; for some blacks, that was death.

history. From there I could also research what times of jobs people from that area of the
world hoped to have when they came over to America.

2- The child seems excited to see Lady Liberty
3- These are hardworking people who will make a better life for themselves.
Who are the people in the photograph?
16. I cannot tell what is going on in the picture to know who the people are. I assume the
picture shows military officials examining either new soldiers, or they are Nazis who are
checking for blue eyes and blonde hair to help Hitler make the “perfect” race.
What is the situation of the people in the photograph? Provide evidence from the photo
that tells you this.

1- The people dressed up are in the military.
18. 2- The people not dressed up are there against their will.
3- The people in line do not look happy.
