Who are the people in the photograph?
 Middle aged women who are cooking a meal for a family gathering
What is the situation of the people in the photograph? Provide evidence from the photo
that tells you this.
 It appears that there are a lot of dishes that are being cooked, more dishes than what
would be needed for a typical family dinner. Because all 4 women appear to be around
the same age, it obviously isn’t a multiple generation household living together, but a
family gathering/reunion.
What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey?
 It may not have a direct purpose as to why the picture was taken. Because sex roles was
not an issue back in the time period, we assume the picture was taken for memories, such
as to put the picture in a family scrap book or picture album.
Why is this photograph important to history?
 The picture shows how women typically had the role of doing household chores back in
the day. However, with one woman is wearing pants in the picture. Because women
typically wore dresses and skirts back then, we assume because she is wearing pants, this
may be near the start of women becoming more equal to men.
What questions does this photograph raise?
 Why is she wearing pants?
 When was it taken?
 What is being cooked for dinner?
 Geographical region?
Write your own caption for the photograph:
 Women preparing a meal for a family gathering.
What could you do to find more information about this photograph?
 I could do a google search or look around on a database to find more information about
the location, and time period, giving me a better understand about what is going on in the
picture.
Based on what you have observed list 3 things you might infer from the photograph
1- In the time period, only women cooked the meals
2- A family gathering was occurring when this picture was taken
3- Many dishes were being made for dinner
Who are the people in the photograph?
 Hitler is in the photograph with his German followers
What is the situation of the people in the photograph? Provide evidence from the photo
that tells you this.
 Hitler is meeting a kid and is trying to show people around how he is a good hearted
person. He simply is working on building his people’s trust and building a relationship
with them. The relationship must be good based on the woman smiling in the
background.
What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey?
 The photographer was probably trying to show people that Hitler is not a terrible man,
but a lovable man who wants a connection with his people.
Why is this photograph important to history?
 This picture shows another side of Hitler that isn’t always mentioned in history classes
What questions does this photograph raise?
 Where were these people at when the picture was being taken?
 Do these people know the awful things their leader has done?
 Is this picture taken before or after Hitler’s destruction of the Jewish people?
Write your own caption for the photograph:
 Hitler meets a member of the upcoming generation of German people.
What could you do to find more information about this photograph?
 It would be great to do a google search about this era and try to find where the picture
came from. Once that is done, I could hopefully figure out the time frame, see where
Germany was at in that point in history, and gather a better understanding of how the
people in the picture saw him.
Based on what you have observed list 3 things you might infer from the photograph
1- Hitler is not as hateful as history books put off (at least to certain people)
2- The people in the background appear to like Hitler; they are smiling.
3- Hitler is a manipulative person
Who are the people in the photograph?
 Police and members of the black community are in the picture
What is the situation of the people in the photograph? Provide evidence from the photo
that tells you this.
 Here we see blacks fighting for their rights, based on how many people of color are
present. We also see the police taking the man down for standing up for his black
community’s rights as people.
What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey?
 The photographer is taking the picture to show how the police are handling the protest at
the time. Also, based on the time period, this was probably taken to show white people
how destructive blacks were and tried to manipulate people to believe there race was
violent.
Why is this photograph important to history?
 This picture shows us how we used to treat blacks very poorly and did not give them the
rights a basic human being deserves.
What questions does this photograph raise?
 What and where were they protesting?
 How many police dogs does it take to take down one man?
 How many times has this group of protestors fought for their rights?
Write your own caption for the photograph:
 Black man breaks the law and resists arrest by police
What could you do to find more information about this photograph?
 Google pictures from this time era to see where the picture came from. From there I
could probably figure out what they were protesting and where at.
Based on what you have observed list 3 things you might infer from the photograph
1- Blacks fought very hard to have equal rights
2- Police were more violent towards black protestors
3- The protest seems non-violent as the black people watching are not rioting, but staying
calm
Who are the people in the photograph?
 Lady Liberty and a black man that hung himself, inferring the saying “give me liberty, or
give me death.”
What is the situation of the people in the photograph? Provide evidence from the photo
that tells you this.
 The black community in the time era had very little rights, and it was better to die than to
have no liberties.
What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey?
 The photographer was inferring the message “give me liberty, or give me death.”
Why is this photograph important to history?
 This photograph shows that the black community in the time era had no liberties and very
little rights, while white people trampled all over them and treated like dogs. It is
important because it reminds us that America is the land of the free, where people should
have basic human rights.
What questions does this photograph raise?
 Who made the picture?
 How close to the blacks revolution is this picture?
 Was this taken at the beginning, middle, or end of their fight?
Write your own caption for the photograph:
 “Give me liberty, or give me death.”
What could you do to find more information about this photograph?
 Find out who made the picture so I could research his or her views on the issue, then I
could better understand the full meaning behind the picture.
Based on what you have observed list 3 things you might infer from the photograph
1- Death is better than little rights and no liberty
2- This time era was very rough for the black community
3- Liberty and freedom comes at a cost; for some blacks, that was death.
Who are the people in the photograph?
 Immigrants who are coming to America for a better life.
What is the situation of the people in the photograph? Provide evidence from the photo
that tells you this.
 These people are poor and have a very hard life, but they are coming to America to try to
make a better life for themselves, and their child, and future children.
What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey?
 America symbolized a new start and a promise for a better life for many immigrants.
Why is this photograph important to history?
 The photograph shows what much it meant for a family to have the chance to come to the
“promise land”
What questions does this photograph raise?
 Where is the family from?
 How long have they been trying to come over to America?
 What does the father/husband plan on doing to support his family?
 Will their journey end up like the families from the book “The Jungle?”
Write your own caption for the photograph:
 Immigrants looking at the symbol of their new country in person for the first time.
What could you do to find more information about this photograph?
 Research the era to find out where most immigrants were coming from at this point in
history. From there I could also research what times of jobs people from that area of the
world hoped to have when they came over to America.
Based on what you have observed list 3 things you might infer from the photograph
1- This family has taken a big risk in hope to have a better life in America.
2- The child seems excited to see Lady Liberty
3- These are hardworking people who will make a better life for themselves.
Who are the people in the photograph?
 I cannot tell what is going on in the picture to know who the people are. I assume the
picture shows military officials examining either new soldiers, or they are Nazis who are
checking for blue eyes and blonde hair to help Hitler make the “perfect” race.
What is the situation of the people in the photograph? Provide evidence from the photo
that tells you this.
 These people are forced to be where they are at. This is based on the straight line they are
in and how none of them look very enthused to be in the situation they are in.
What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey?
 The photographer was taking a picture to mark a historical moment. Maybe the photo
was also used for training purposes for military officials?
Why is this photograph important to history?
 This photograph shows us how the style of dress was during the time period.
What questions does this photograph raise?
 What is going on in the picture?
 What country does this take place in?
 Are these men here by free will or against their will?
 Why are all the men in line shirtless?
Write your own caption for the photograph:
 New entries being examined by military officials.
What could you do to find more information about this photograph?
 Google pictures of militaries from the time frame this picture was taken to determine
where the picture came from. This would help the understanding of what the people are
in line for.
Based on what you have observed list 3 things you might infer from the photograph
1- The people dressed up are in the military.
2- The people not dressed up are there against their will.
3- The people in line do not look happy.
