This document summarizes and analyzes three historical photographs. The first photo shows four boys on bikes in Nazi Germany, with one boy flying an anti-Hitler flag, showing dissent even among Hitler Youth. The second photo depicts US soldiers during the Vietnam War, highlighting racial integration in the military. The third photo from prohibition era shows businessmen pouring alcohol into sewers, conveying the class divide on the policy. 1. Photo #1
Who are the people in the photograph?
There’s 4 boys riding their bikes. Most likely Hitler Youth members.
What is the situation of the people in the photograph? Provide evidence from the photo
that tells you this.
It was not uncommon for youth to go around promoting Hitler’s political stances
throughout the neighborhood. They are not doing this by choice though, as every young
person in Germany at this time was forced to do this. However, these boys are not doing
that; instead they are going against his stances (you can tell that by the flag that is in the
bike of the 3rd boy).
What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey?
Not everyone was agreeing with Hitler, even in Germany.
Why is this photograph important to history?
A lot of people think that the Hitler Youth was a voluntary organization, and this shows
that even people who were against it HAD to be a part of it.
What questions does this photograph raise?
Was going against the Hitler Youth a popular thing?
Did these boys have to be careful about how/where/ to who they protested?
Was there a punishment for going against the system even as children?
Were their families supportive of their actions/in danger because of it?
Write your own caption for the photograph:
“The Brave Few”
What could you do to find more information about this photograph?
Look for the model and make of those bikes/where those bikes were located/when they
were made.
Look for the uniforms of the boys; where/when those uniforms were popular.
Look for the symbol on the flag and trace its origins.
Based on what you have observed list 3 things you might infer from the photograph
1- These boys are extreamly brave.
2. 2- The Hitler youth was a very structured organization with strict rules (based on their
uniforms and organization.)
3- There were young people who dissagreed with Hitler’s stances.
Photo #2
Who are the people in the photograph?
A USA military troop at base camp during the Vietnam War.
What is the situation of the people in the photograph? Provide evidence from the photo
that tells you this.
They are fighting in the Vietnam War. This can be proved by looking at the jungle-like
background, the weapons, and also the African American soldier.
What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey?
Color does not determine whether or not you can be a soldier.
War is hell.
Why is this photograph important to history?
The Vietnam War was the first American war where blacks and whites fought together as
one unit; this was one of the first photos showing this.
The war was a very important chapter in America’s history and this shows just how hard
it was even out of combat and at base (hot, sleeping in over populated tents, miserable).
What questions does this photograph raise?
Was everyone happy about the non-segregation in this war?
Were all base camps like this/nicer/worse?
Write your own caption for the photograph:
“Victory During War.”
What could you do to find more information about this photograph?
Look up the gun shown in the picture.
Look up the uniforms (When and where they were worn).
Look up segregation within the military history.
3. Based on what you have observed list 3 things you might infer from the photograph
1- Vietnam is very hot.
2- The men in the base camps were very close to the other men in their unit.
3- More important things are happening than just stupidly arguing about race.
Photo #3
Who are the people in the photograph?
Business men and middle/lower class
What is the situation of the people in the photograph? Provide evidence from the photo
that tells you this.
This was taken during the prohibition. They are pouring alcohol into the streets and down
the rain drains.
What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey?
Not everyone was on board with what they were doing, just the people who could afford
to find something else to replace alcohol.
Why is this photograph important to history?
It shows the break between the classes during this time in history.
What questions does this photograph raise?
Were the wealthy withholding some alcohol for themselves?
Was this just a show for the wealthy?
Write your own caption for the photograph:
“Hope Down the Drain”
What could you do to find more information about this photograph?
Look up the bottles; when/where were they manufactured.
Look up the hats of the men; when/where were they manufactured.
Look up the prohibition history.
4. Based on what you have observed list 3 things you might infer from the photograph
