This document defines and provides examples of different types of phrases in English grammar: noun phrases, prepositional phrases, adjective phrases, adverb phrases, verb phrases, infinitive phrases, and gerund phrases. It explains that phrases add meaning to sentences but are not complete sentences on their own as they lack subjects, verbs, and predicates. Examples are given for each type of phrase to illustrate their grammatical functions.

2. Small group of words that add meanings to
a sentence.
It is not a sentence as it does not convey a
complete sense.
It has no subject verb or predicate
It cannot stand alone.
Example. In the class behind the
room.

3. Noun phrase.
Verb phrase.
Adjective phrase.
Adverb phrase.
Gerund phrase.
Infinitive Phrase.
Prepositional phrase.

4. Noun phrase: A phrase that acts like a noun
in a sentence is called N.P.
It contains a noun and other associated
words in shape of determiners and
modifiers, which modify nouns.
A N.P consists of a noun as a head word
and other related words may come after or
before the noun.
They hired a beautiful home.
She bought a decent black shirt.
A woman in the window shouts for help.

5. A phrase comprising a preposition and
object of preposition ( Noun Pronoun) is
called prepositional phrase
The kids were laughing at the scene.
He is sleeping on the carpet.
The students look at the beautiful baby.

6. The phrase that acts like an adjective in a
sentence is called adjective phrase. Like
Adjectives it modifies Noun or Pronoun.
She bought a beautiful brown chair.
A lady with long hair coming here.
She gave me a cup full of milk.

7.  A phrase that acts like an adverb in a
sentence is called A P.
 It modifies Verb other Adverb in a sentence.
 He drives a car in a very high speed.
 He runs very fast.
 She always speaks in a very respectful
manner.
 She welcomed the guest in a very nice way.
 He stayed at college for a few hours.
 The kid sat beside her mother.

8. A verb phrase is the group of main verbs
and helping verbs.
She is writing a letter.
He has taken his annual exam.
Students must reach in time for class.
They have been playing game since
morning.

9. It contains an infinitive( to plus base
form)or modifiers or other related words
linked to the infinitive.
It acts as a Noun an Adjective or adverb in
a sentence.
The boy played to reach final match.
Govt made a plan to help the poor.
To get success in examination is my
ambition.

10. Gerund is a word composed of Base form
and ing. When it works in a sentence as a
supplement of verb and give the sense of
Noun.
Example: I love reciting the holy Quran.
I like the raising slogans of protesters.
Helping the needy people is the aim of my
life.
