Multi – Word verbs that combine with one or two
particles (a preposition and/or an adverb). If the
addition of the particle(s) changes the meaning of
the verb in some way, it is usually called a
phrasal verb because it has an idiomatic meaning
– the phrase means something different from its
component parts.
Phrasal verbs are either separable or nonseparable.
Separable phrasal verb is phrasal verb which can be
separated by its object.
Both sentences below are correct:
 I took my shoes off
 I took off my shoes
However, if the object is a pronoun, it must be placed
between the verb and the particle.
 I took them off. (True)
 I took off them. (False)
Non-separable phrsal verbs are phrasal verbs which
cannotbe separated its object.
You may see the following examples ;
 He runs into an old friend. (True)
 He looks after our children while we are away.
(False)
In addition it’s transitive. They don’t take an object.
Look at the following :
 His mother pass away three years ago.
 John was so tired that soon he dropped off.

sometimes the meaning of the phrasal verbs is
really different from verb and particle(s) that form
them.
