Light reaction
• The first stage of photosynthesis is
called light reaction because plants
require light energy to perform this
process.
• Light reaction begins with the
absorption of light in the organelle
called chloroplasts.
Chloroplasts
Carbon dioxide
enters the leaf, and
oxygen exits, by way of
microscopic pores
called stomata (singular,
stoma; from the Greek,
meaning “mouth”).
Chloroplasts
Water absorbed by the
roots is delivered to the
leaves in veins. Leaves
also use veins to export
sugar to roots and other
non photosynthetic parts
of the plant.

Chloroplasts are
surrounded by a pair of
membranes; outer and
inner membrane.
Inside the inner
membrane is another
system of membranes
called thylakoids that are
arranged in flattened
sacs.
Chloroplasts
Thylakoids are
connected and
layered to form
stacks called grana.
Surrounding grana is
a solution called
stroma.
Chloroplasts
There are about
half a million chloroplasts
in a chunk of leaf with a top
surface area of 1 𝑚𝑚2
.
Chloroplasts are found
mainly in the cells of the
mesophyll, the tissue in
the interior of the leaf.
The Nature of Sunlight
The Nature of Sunlight
• Light is a form of energy known as electromagnetic
energy, also called electromagnetic radiation. The
distance between the crests of electromagnetic
waves is called the wavelength. Wavelengths
range from less than a nanometer (for gamma
rays) to more than a kilometer (for radio waves).
This entire range of radiation is known as the
electromagnetic spectrum
The Nature of Sunlight
The segment most important to life
is the narrow band from about 380
nm to 750 nm in wavelength. This
radiation is known as visible light
because it can be detected as
various colors by the human eye.
Photosynthetic Pigments:
The Light Receptors
When light meets
matter, it may be
reflected, transmitted,
or absorbed.
Substances that
absorb visible light are
known as pigments.
Carotenoids
• Absorbs yellow, orange and brown pigments.
They also function as accessory pigments

  • 7. Light reaction • The first stage of photosynthesis is called light reaction because plants require light energy to perform this process. • Light reaction begins with the absorption of light in the organelle called chloroplasts.
  • 8. Chloroplasts Carbon dioxide enters the leaf, and oxygen exits, by way of microscopic pores called stomata (singular, stoma; from the Greek, meaning “mouth”).
  • 9. Chloroplasts Water absorbed by the roots is delivered to the leaves in veins. Leaves also use veins to export sugar to roots and other non photosynthetic parts of the plant.
  • 10. Chloroplasts Chloroplasts are surrounded by a pair of membranes; outer and inner membrane. Inside the inner membrane is another system of membranes called thylakoids that are arranged in flattened sacs.
  • 11. Chloroplasts Thylakoids are connected and layered to form stacks called grana. Surrounding grana is a solution called stroma.
  • 12. Chloroplasts There are about half a million chloroplasts in a chunk of leaf with a top surface area of 1 𝑚𝑚2 . Chloroplasts are found mainly in the cells of the mesophyll, the tissue in the interior of the leaf.

  • 14. The Nature of Sunlight • Light is a form of energy known as electromagnetic energy, also called electromagnetic radiation. The distance between the crests of electromagnetic waves is called the wavelength. Wavelengths range from less than a nanometer (for gamma rays) to more than a kilometer (for radio waves). This entire range of radiation is known as the electromagnetic spectrum
  • 15. The Nature of Sunlight The segment most important to life is the narrow band from about 380 nm to 750 nm in wavelength. This radiation is known as visible light because it can be detected as various colors by the human eye.
  • 16. Photosynthetic Pigments: The Light Receptors When light meets matter, it may be reflected, transmitted, or absorbed. Substances that absorb visible light are known as pigments.

  1. Different pigments absorb light of different wavelengths, and the wavelengths that are absorbed disappear. If a pigment is illuminated with white light, the color we see is the color most reflected or transmitted by the pigment. (If a pigment absorbs all wavelengths, it appears black.) We see green when we look at a leaf because chlorophyll absorbs violet-blue and red light while transmitting and reflecting green light
  2. Only chlorophyll A is directly involved in the light reactions of photosynthesis. Chlorophyll b assists chlorophyll b in capturing light that is why it is called accessory pigment.
