What is photosynthesis?
The word photosynthesis comes from
Greek language:
“photo” means “light”
“synthesis” means “putting together”
Photosynthesis just means “putting
together with light”
Photosynthesis is the process where light
energy is absorbed by chlorophyll and
converted to chemical energy which is
used to synthesize glucose from water
and carbon dioxide, liberating oxygen
during the process.
Reaction of photosynthesis
Mechanism of photosynthesis
• Photosynthesis is considered as an oxidation-
reduction reaction activated by light absorbed by
chlorophyll, resulting in the evolution of oxygen
from water and in the formation of reduced
carbon compound (e.g. carbohydrate) from
carbon dioxide. These oxidation-reduction
reaction occurs through 2 pages:
1.Light dependent phase .( Noncyclic and
cyclic photophosphorylation).
2.Light independent phase.(calvin cycle and
Hatch & Slack cycle).
Light Dependent Reaction
• Takes place in thylakoids
(contain chlorophyll)
• Requires light
• Converts light energy into
chemical energy
• Light independent reaction
depends on the end products
( reduced NADP and ATP) of
light dependent reaction .
Light Independent Reaction
• Also known as calvin cycle
• Takes place in the stroma of the
chloroplast
• No light required but need the
end products (reduced NADP
and ATP) of light dependent
reaction reduced NADP and
ATP to produce simple sugars.
• Need an enzyme RUBISCO
(Ribulose Biphosphate
Carboxylase) and carbon
dioxide.
Conditions necessary for
photosynthesis
• The presence of-
• Sunlight
• Chlorophyll
• Carbon dioxide and
• Water
Is necessary for the process of photosynthesis.
The photosynthesis will not occur if any of one
material above is absent, and this will ultimately
cause the plant to die.

Affecting factors of photosynthesis
External factors Internal factors
•Light
•Carbon dioxide
•Temperature
•Water
•Oxygen
•Minerals
•Chemical substance
•Chlorophyll
•Age of leaf
•Leaf structure
•The amount of sugar
•Enzyme
Importance of Photosynthesis
• It provides food.
• It removes carbon dioxide .
• It supply oxygen .
• Maintains oxygen and carbon dioxide balance
in atmosphere .
• Fossil fuels are a store of energy derived from
sunlight through photosynthesis.
Overview of photosynthesis
If photosynthesis not
occurs what will happen?
