Fault Interpretation
Interpreting faults is one of the key tasks in any seismic
interpretation workflow.
You can interpret faults manually on inlines, crosslines, time
slices, random lines, or arbitrary lines in 2D, 3D and
Interpretation windows.
4. Schlumberger-Private
Manual fault picking (1)
1. Open a new Interpretation window and display a crossline of a seismic cube from
the Input pane.
2. Click the Select icon in the Window toolbar.
3. Right-click the seismic section to show mini toolbar.
4. On the mini toolbar, select New fault.
This creates a new fault located in the active Horizon Interpretation folder in the
Input pane. The fault is active (bold).

Additional ways to create a fault
Click the Seismic Interpretation tab in the 2D/3D
interpretation group.
Right-click the Interpretation folder and select New
fault.
Click the Insert a new fault object in the active
interpretation folder icon in the Interpretation
manager.

Manual fault picking (4)
6. Interpret the fault on other lines of the cube.
Right-click on the seismic section and select
the icon (Intersection player) from
the mini-toolbar.
In Intersection player adjust the section
increment.
Use the play tools to scroll thru the cube
during fault
…or use PageUp and PageDown keys

7. In the Interpretation window, click the Select icon on the Window
toolbar, then right-click the fault. The fault mini toolbar and its contextual
menu open. The mini toolbar has options for fault interpretation.

8. Click the Interpret faults icon on the mini toolbar or press the F key
to continue. You also can click the Interpret faults icon on the
Seismic Interpretation - Tool Palette to continue interpreting faults.
You call up the Seismic Interpretation -

Edit a fault segment (1)
Fault editing is an integral part of fault interpretation.
Faults are fine-tuned by interpreters to make sure their
interpretations reflect the subsurface geology.
11. Schlumberger-Private
Edit a fault segment (2)
1. To activate a fault in the Interpretation window, make it bold in the
Input pane. The color of the fault is highlighted when it is active.
2. To edit a fault segment, go to the Seismic interpretation Tool Palette,
click Select and edit/add points. Move points on the fault or add new
points to the fault segment to accurately mark the fault geometry.
12. Schlumberger-Private
Edit a fault segment (3)
3. To delete all or part of a fault segment:
a. Click the Interactive eraser from the Seismic interpretation
Tool Palette.
b. Click a digitized point on the
active fault to remove it.
13. Schlumberger-Private
Move a fault segment (1)
1. Activate the fault, click Single point from the Seismic interpretation Tool
Palette.
2. Click between two digitized
points (nodes) on the
remaining fault segment
to make the entire segment
yellow.
14. Schlumberger-Private
Move Fault Segment (2)
3. Click Select and edit/add points on the Seismic interpretation
Tool Palette.
4. Drag a single digitized point (node)
to move the whole segment to a new
location on the seismic section.
15. Schlumberger-Private
Reassign segments and points between faults
You can reassign a fault stick to a new fault plane.
This is particularly useful in areas with intense faulting
where an interpreter frequently add new faults and
reassigns existing faults.
16. Schlumberger-Private
Reassign fault segments
1. Activate a fault in an Interpretation window.
2. Right-click this active fault. From the mini toolbar, click the Paint brush and click the
fault segment, which turns yellow.
3. Right-click again from the same fault segment. From the mini toolbar, select how
you want the fault to be reassigned. The new fault appears in the Input pane.

Alternative ways to access fault Settings menu (1)
With Select from the Window toolbar, right-click the fault and click the
Settings from the mini toolbar.
18. Schlumberger-Private
Alternative ways to access fault Settings menu (2)
With the fault active, click the Tools contextual tab and click Settings in
the Selection group.

Clean faults
1. On the Operations tab in the Settings for Fault interpretation
window, expand Convert points/polygons/surfaces.
2. Select Create clean fault.
3. Click Run.

A note on cleaning fault interpretation
Typically this is done prior to using the faults for structural modeling. (This will be
discussed later during this course).
Cleaned faults cannot be edited.
To edit or extend a cleaned fault plane you need to right-click on the fault object in
Petrel Input and select Convert to fault interpretation.

Restrict mode (1)
1. Display interpretations and seismic lines in a 3D window.
2. From the Window toolbar, click Select and click the fault.
3. From Tools contextual tab,
click Restrict in the
Visualization group.
24. Schlumberger-Private
Restrict mode (2)
4. Click , which restricts the display to the active interpretation.
5. Try the other option by clicking , which restricts the display to all the
interpretation visible.
Note: The Global restrict mode is available directly from the Window toolbar.
6. To undo, click in the Window toolbar.

Exercise 2: Effectuate a fault interpretation (1)
Create a new Interpretation folder
and call it: New faults.
• Right-click on the folder
Seismic and select New
interpretation folder.
• Goto Settings of the new
folder and change the name.
• Make the new folder active
(bold) thru clicking on it.
26. Schlumberger-Private
Exercise 2: Effectuate a fault interpretation (2)
• Display an Xline in the
Interpretation Window.
• right-click on the seismic
section and select the
Intersection player.
• Select Xline 400 and
increment 20 (as shown
below).
27. Schlumberger-Private
Exercise 2: Effectuate a fault interpretation (3)
• Create a new fault - follow the
procedure shown in the figure.
• The new fault will be stored in
the active folder New faults.
29. Schlumberger-Private
Exercise 2: Effectuate a fault interpretation (5)
• Using the Player
display Xline 420.
• Continue the fault
interpretation.
• Interpret every 20th
xline.
30. Schlumberger-Private
Exercise 2: Effectuate a fault interpretation (6)
Goto Settings of the new fault and select Style.
Uncheck the two highlighted check boxed of the
figure to the right.
32. Schlumberger-Private
Exercise 2: Effectuate a fault interpretation (8)
• Right-click on one of
the active (yellow) fault
sticks and select Move
selected to new.
• A new fault is created
in the active fault folder.
Change its name to F1.
• Assign the other fault
sticks to their fault
planes in a similar way.
