The document analyzes 610 published coaching science research papers from 1970-2001 to identify trends. It finds that the number of published articles increased yearly, with most appearing in top journals. Half of studies focused on coaching behavior, and methodologies were mostly quantitative. Coaches were frequently studied participants, usually in team sports or gymnastics at the college or high school level. The analysis concludes that such reviews are important to help close the theory-practice gap, set research agendas, help coaches access research, and aid coach educators.
