Jesse Owens Essay
Crafting an essay on the subject of Jesse Owens can be a challenging yet rewarding endeavor.
While Owens' life and achievements offer a wealth of material to explore, the difficulty lies in
striking the right balance between detailing his groundbreaking accomplishments and providing
a nuanced understanding of the historical context in which he lived.
Research is paramount in creating a comprehensive Jesse Owens essay. Delving into primary
sources, biographies, and historical accounts is essential to grasp the intricate details of his life,
the challenges he faced, and the impact he made on both sports and society. However, the
abundance of information can be overwhelming, requiring meticulous selection and organization
of facts to weave a coherent narrative.
Another challenge lies in avoiding a mere recitation of Owens' achievements. The goal is not
only to list his medals and records but to delve into the significance of his triumphs in the face of
racial discrimination and the political climate of the time. Balancing the personal and the
historical, the essay should capture Owens as both an individual and a symbol of resilience and
courage.
Moreover, addressing the complexity of Owens' legacy presents an additional hurdle. While he is
celebrated for breaking racial barriers and defying Hitler's ideology during the 1936 Olympics, it
is crucial to acknowledge the ongoing racial challenges faced by African Americans despite
Owens' success.
The art of essay writing involves not just conveying information but also engaging the reader.
Finding a compelling angle, constructing a persuasive argument, and maintaining a cohesive
structure are all vital elements. Crafting a conclusion that leaves a lasting impression without
oversimplifying Owens' impact adds another layer of difficulty.
In conclusion, writing an essay on Jesse Owens demands a careful balance of historical accuracy,
personal narrative, and critical analysis. It requires a deep understanding of the subject, a skillful
integration of research, and an ability to present complex ideas in a coherent and engaging
manner. While challenging, the process can be immensely rewarding, offering an opportunity to
explore the life of an iconic figure and the broader social and historical context. If you find the
task overwhelming, assistance is available, and similar essays or even more extensive academic

Mental Illness Is A Social Problem
Mental illness is a health condition that affects an individual s moods and thinking
in a way that changes how that person relates to other people in society. The
functioning of the affected person is also altered and usually results in the person
failing to perform some of the daily activities that the person has previously
engaged in. Mental illness can be considered a combination of both social and health
complications, affecting the social life of the people who fall victim in many ways
(Elliott Huizinga, 2012). There are some health complications that are also
experienced with mental disorders. It is also important to note that medical attention
forms part of the therapies that try to correct or control this condition. More recently
most concern has been on the fact that mental illness is a major social problem in the
world (Gonzalez Rosenheck, 2014). It has been reported that the number of people
with mental disorder is increasing in our communities at an alarming rate.
Environmental and social changes are among the most mentioned causes of the
accelerating rate of mental illness in society (Häfner, 1985). Despite the prevalence,
about one fifth of the adult population will battle with mental illness every year (
Facts and figures about mental illness, 2014) and the acknowledgement of authorities
mental illness is still given less attention then is needed to treat the problem
successfully. Health bodies need to be putting more resources into this area as

Alice In Wonderland Essay
As we read Alice s Adventures in Wonderland and The Island of Dr. Moreau, we
enter into two unique worlds of imagination. Both Lewis Carroll and H.G. Wells
describe lands of intrigue and mystery. We follow Alice and Prendick into two
different worlds where animals speak, evolution is tested, and reality is bent until it
nearly breaks. It is the masterminds of Lewis Carroll and H.G. Wellsthat take these
worlds of fantasy and make them realistic. How do these two great authors make the
unbelievable believable? Both Alice s Adventures in Wonderlandand The Island of
Dr. Moreaufloat in between a dream world and reality, which makes the real seem
unbelievable and the unbelievable seem real.
In H.G. Wells s The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is later in the story, where reality really becomes deformed. First, Prendick is
locked out of the inner rooms of the enclosure, because of their little secrets.
Second, Prendick walks out into the woods to get away from the puma s crying. It
is hear that he gets a good look at one of the deformities for the first time. Then I
saw it was a man, going on all fours like a beast! (pg. 38). It is this sight that sends
Prendick s imagination wild. The thicket about me became altered to my
imagination. Every shadow became something more than a shadow, became an
ambush, every rustle became a threat. Invisible things seemed watching me (pg.
39). It is these emotions of Prendick s that make the unbelievable seem real. He has
gone from a sane man with some studies in science to a man who fears the shadows
and sees men walk on all fours. The dream state of everything at this time keeps us
believing that anything is possible.
This is the same technique that Lewis Carroll uses in Alice s Adventures in
Wonderland. The story begins with Alice getting tired, which implies that she is
falling asleep and going to enter the fantastic world of dreams. Immediately, she sees
a white rabbit in a waistcoat. This puts the reader directly into the world of fantasy
and imagination. It is Carroll s use of explanations that makes this unbelievable world
seem real. No matter how strange something appears it has a
To What Extent Does Schlink in His Novel “the
Reader”,...
Essay Response To The Reader To what extent does Schlink in his novel The Reader ,
show that it is impossible to escape one s past. In his novel The Reader , author
Bernhard Schlink through the use of techniques such as structure, setting and
characterisation reveals to an immense extent that it is impossible to escape one s
past. Schlink utilises the main protagonists of the text, Michael and Hanna, depicting
their relationship, along with the idea of post war German guilt to further represent
this idea. Michael is only fifteen when he first encounters Hanna, after this crucial
point in the novel Michael and Hanna s relationship eventuates and ultimately he falls

Schlink portrays Michael s attempt to alleviate both Hanna s and his own feelings
of guilt sourced from their relationship and Hanna s involvement in the crime in
the quote, She knew what she had done to people in the camp...she dealt with it
intensively during her last years in prison pg 211, Chapter 11, Part 3. The idea of
being unable to escape the guilt of your past is shown by Schlink through the
increasing negative consequences of Michael and Hanna s relationship that result
from the setting of post war Germany. Through the characterisation of Hanna,
Schlink deeply demonstrates that the past was impossible to escape. One of the
main components of Hanna s character is that she was illiterate. Many of Hanna s
past decisions that greatly affect the present are based in her illiteracy. One of
these decisions was to become an SS guard at a concentration camp, and it s this
decision that causes her to be tried for crimes committed during WWII, and
convicted to life in prison. The idea that due to her illiteracy Hanna was tried and
sent to prison is a clear representation of Hanna being unable to escape her past.
Schlink uses Hanna s trial of her accused war crimes as a symbol of her illiteracy
coming back into her life, further demonstrating that she was not able to escape her
past. This is shown in the quote, Her struggle was not limited to the trial. She was
struggling as she had always struggled. Pg 133, Chapter
Early Childhood Caries ( Ecc )
Chapter 1 Early childhood caries (ECC), which is commonly known as tooth
decay among children younger than 6 years of age, is currently affecting nearly
half of the United States 5 year olds, despite it being highly preventable (Hirsch,
Edelstein, Frosh, Anselmo, 2012). No mother wants their children to be prone to
dental decay or make them suffer from this disease if it is not necessary. According
to Kawashita, Kitamura, Saito, and Corporation (2011), Children experiencing
caries as infants or toddlers have a much greater probability of subsequent caries in
both the primary and permanent dentitions. The problem with early childhood
caries starts with lack of parental education and poor oral hygiene. ECC, can be
referred to as baby bottle tooth decay and many parents don t realize how
detrimental it can be for the baby s oral health or maybe don t even realize that
they have been putting their baby at risk. I am doing this research to explore
whether it is better for the baby to receive milk out of a bottle or to breastfeed in
relation to early childhood caries. I also want to give uneducated parents effective
ways to prevent and treat ECC, if it does happen to occur. I gathered the
information for my research from peer reviewed websites on google scholar. I want
to become more educated on the subject to explain to my patients who are expecting
what precautions they should be aware of and hopefully prevent future risk of early
childhood caries for their infants.
Migratory Implications Of Media On Interracial
Relationships
Migratory Implications in Media on Interracial Relationships James M. Oscher Jr.
University of Nevada Las Vegas Migratory Implications in Media on Interracial
Relationships Just over 50 years ago the United States Supreme Court overturned
and nationalized the ruling on interracial marriage. Since then there has been an
ever increasing amount of interracial marriages, along with interracial relationships.
Since then there also has been a greater increase in the public being exposed to
mass media. There have been numerous studies on interracial relationships, with
variables like wars, legal matters, immigration and even military occupation. We
will examine in this paper if media exposure has an impact on cross cultural or
interracial relationship in relation to immigration to the United States. I reason that
there is a correlation between public opinion views and legal status of immigration
to views on interracial relationships. We see a recent example of this with Barack
Obama s successful campaign for the presidency of the United States, Halle Berry s
Oscar win in 2002, multiracial and multinational collaborations and successes in
music, and a visible rise in ethnically ambiguous models and celebrities (Washington,
2012). Literature Review To understand the position taken we must look at migration

Coral Reef Research Paper
Marine ecosystems can be split into coastal and ocean habitats. Coastal habitats
extend from the shoreline at the beach to the edge of the continental shelf, way out
further than swimming distance. These habitats are home to many kinds of life
including fish, corals, birds and even bacteria. All these organisms are part of a
long and complex food web and all depend on each other to survive. These
ecosystems also provide a vast number of animals with protection from predators
and are also extremely important to humans by providing a rich source of food and
income through fishing and aquatic activities. They also support species by
providing humans with half the oxygen we breathe to survive and they can support
species that serve as animal feed, fertilizers, additives in food, make up and
medicines. Other organisms of this habitat aid in protection and structure such as
mangroves and seagrasses which protect the coastline from wave action and erosion.

The increased levels of acid inhibits the ability of marine animals which disrupts life
within the systems food web. One species severely impacted by rising temperatures
and excess carbon dioxide (ocean acidification) is reefs, in particular coral reefs. The
higher temperatures lead to coral bleaching which is a stress mechanism that expels
the colourful algae that inhibit them. Some individuals are able to recover, however
many die resulting in an entire ecosystem to virtually disappear. If bleaching persists
other damaging diseases will affect corals such as black band disease, white plague,
white band disease and white pox which all have the ability to kill the coral which
could potentially lead to the death of the extended ecosystems it

A Brief Note On Climate Change, Biodiversity, And...
Using the Eurobarometer 83.4: Climate Change, Biodiversity, and Discrimination
against Minority Groups (May June 2015, ICPSR 36403) for the purpose of
comparing various counties in the European Union. Eurobarometer is a series of
public opinion surveys conducted regularly on behalf of the European Commission.
The scope of the project would be to look into the information given in the
Eurobarometer and to compare why some countries have common characteristic
while others have a great range between them on certain characteristics. In addition, it
covers these various countries the geographic coverage is Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria,
Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, European Union, Finland,

For this data collection project, I wanted to focus on countries that came from a
wide range of economic and social backgrounds. The purpose of doing so was to
gain a better understanding on how differing histories of certain countries could
affect the answers that they responded with. The wide array of answers would better
show the diversity of these countries. I theorize that citizens in these countries will
have a high response rate of citizens who answer affirmatively to being informed.

Women s Roles During The European Renaissance
Essay 2 Today s first world society is undergoing substantial changes in the social
sector of human civilization. The topics of race, sex, and homosexuality are at the
top of debated philosophies and ideals and how they fit into society. These same
principals underwent changes in the time of the European Renaissance which has
shaped many of our views on these issues and topics today. Women s roles in society
and their rights, the emergence of raceissues and troubles, and the topic of
homosexuals and how they are to be perceived may sound like topics on the
headlines of newspapers today yet they were the same topics that were debated and
discussed about throughout Italy, Spain, and other parts of Europe centuries ago. For

This was no different for the people of the Renaissance hundreds of years later. It
was not however until the turn of the fourteenth century that larger and larger
quantities of blacks began to enter the European continent through trade, slavery,
or free will. Often having a slave or servant of black color was seen as another
display of great wealth, due to how hard it was to acquire them at this point in
time. While in later centuries some people would have hundreds of slaves working
for them, at the time of the Renaissance having ten was an immense quantity. While
seen as considerable usage to economic needs, they were socially looked down
upon due to the Europeans extreme belief in religion. The problem extends from
the idea that God was the shining light and light is white in color, therefore the
black Africans must be the opposite of God and be instead creations of Lucifer.
This could even be seen in the artwork of the time where the Devil was painted as a
black man in Medieval times, and this trend continued onto the Renaissance.
However there was the opposite idea that blackness stood for emptiness and sorrow
and mourning, two qualities which were praised very highly by priests and other
devout Christians. It would not be for centuries to come that these religious

Developed by Edna Foa, prolonged exposure therapy exposes patients to their
traumatic event over and over again while being in a safe place (Blankenship 277).
Although prolonged exposure therapy is one treatment it has four main elements
including education, breathing retraining, in vivo exposure, and imaginal exposure.
Education consists of learning about the treatment, treatment symptoms, and goals of
the treatment. Breathing retraining helps patients to relax and calm themselves when
they become anxious. In vivo exposure allows patients with PTSD to be put in real
life situations that they are not comfortable with due to the trauma they have faced.
Lastly, imaginal exposure allows the patients with post traumatic stress disorder to
talk through their traumatic event while it is recorded. After repeatedly talking
through their event, the patient then listens to what they have said (Swan 28).
Prolonged exposure therapy occurs over eight to fifteen sessions. Each session can
range from 60 to 90 minutes depending on the patient and their specific needs
(Blankenship 278). This treatment helps patients with post traumatic stress disorder
by allowing them to face their fears associated with the traumatic event and gain
control over their emotions (Swan 28). Prolonged exposure therapy is proven to be a
very effective therapy and is highly supported for the use of treating PTSD

Hiring An Intern On The Workplace
Hiring an intern to help catch up on papers in a publishing company affects the
company, its employees, maybe its clients and of course the intern. In this situation,
the company makes out the best. Going off of the information that most publishing
companies do not pay their interns, the business would basically be getting free
work. The organization would be getting help equivalent to a worker and not have
to increase their payroll at all. The publisher would be able to gain more free time to
tackle other more important job related tasks. Furthermore, it may help the
organization to succeed and reach new goals because their current workers have
more time to dedicate. They can work on improving their efficiencies or hiring

With a high number of interns coming in, not getting paid, not getting educational
experience, and quitting, the organization is bound to obtain a bad reputation. In
turn, this will make the recruiting process extremely hard for paid employees,
because who wants to work for a company that is not ethical nor treats its members
right? In general, at first, a non paid intern doing the work of a paid worker seems
great for the organization. But in the end it may prove to hurt both the company and
the unpaid intern.
Having a publishing intern who files papers could work out ethical and legally if the
internship program contains a well designed training program. According to the Fair
Labor Standard Act, any unpaid intern must not provide any direct benefits to the
company (Noe et al., 228). Unpaid interns exist in the organization for educational
benefits. According to the U.S Small Business Administration, filing papers and
answering emails are considered activities which provide direct benefits to an
organization; therefore they must be paid (Beesly). Knowing this information, in the
case of the publishing intern, s/he must be paid if the company wants them to file
papers because they are providing the company benefits. The U.S. Department of
Labor Wage and Hour Division state s, educational benefits does not exempt them
from having to pay the intern (WHD Staff). SHRM warns companies to distinguish
between an employee and an intern (Cleary). The main difference between
Foreshadowing In The Inspector Calls
The story, The Inspector Calls is set in the year 1912, in the Pre World War I Era in
a fictional place called Brumley, an industrial city in the north Midlands , which is
most likely located in England due to the author being an English playwright, and
the content of the play analysis the English society and hierarchy. At that time in
England, the reigning monarch was King George V, with the strong lingering
influence of the Edwardian Era in the people, named after Edward VII. At that time,
women were given slightly more social status than in previous times, and also
rallied and marched for a greater political and social power, and also more rights.
The workers were demanding more rights from their employers in factories and
corporations due to them being traditionally treated less well than other members of
society. The stage setting of the playin located in the house belonging to the Birling

lands of France, Russia, and Britain. This is an ironic foreshadowing as the character

Maya Angelou And William Faulkner s Barbie Doll
Maya Angelou, William Faulkner, and Marge Piercy all came up with a common
theme that society has so many expectations for women and sometimes they lead
to terrible things such as insecurities and even death. In Piercy s story, Barbie Doll,
a girl is told she is ugly many times so she kills herself by cutting her legs and nose
off. Once she is dead, everyone finally says that she is pretty. A Rose for Emily, by
William Faulkner is about a womanthat has always been overprotected by her father
and when he dies, she goes crazy, leading the town to talk. Maya Angeloutouches the
subject of ugly woman with beautiful character when the men in the story cannot
figure out why they like the woman in her story, Phenomenal Woman. These texts
make use of imagery, irony, metaphors, and similes in order to communicate the
theme. Marge Piercy s poem, Barbie Doll, helps us realize how hypocritical
society is and how much we criticize and bring other people down. She was advised
to play coy, exhorted to come on hearty (lines 12 13). In this example, it shows that
people would tell the girlchild to act a certain way, quiet and reserved, but then go
back and tell her to act loudly and cheerfully. This example helps to prove my point
that society has a lot of expectations for women by using irony. In the casket
displayed... everyone said (lines 19 23). This use of imagery helps us understand how
girlchild s body looked while it was lied down in her casket. This shows how society

Paleolithic art, an introduction
The oldest art: ornamentation
Humans have been creating art with many different meanings and using a plethora
of materials for thousands of years. Ancient non representational ornamentation
has been discovered all across Africa, featuring punctured snail shells covered in red
ochre. These shells are believed to be around 82,000 years old, and have shown to be
strung as beads for necklaces and other jewelry. In Israel, Nassarius beads have been
discovered, reaching up to 100,000 years old. Shells that were pierced and
geometrically etched with ochre were also discovered in a 75,000 year old layer of
sediment.
The oldest representational art
Representational imagery in its oldest form is believed to come from the Paleolithic
period, from the Aurignacian culture. Across Europe, 200 caves with paintings,
sculptures and drawings displaying representational image making were found. A

Roland Barthes s Theory Of Semiotics Through Digital...
1. INTRODUCTION
Semiotics is the study of sign systems. It explores how words and other signs convey
meaning. In semiotics, a sign is anything that stands in for something other than itself.
This lesson focuses primarily on linguistic signs. Roland Barthes is a theorist that is
particularly interested in how things mean rather than what things mean. Through
Barthes and Saussure s theories, the understanding of semiotics through digital
advertising will be represented through an argument of comparing these two unique
key thinkers. The comparison between these two theorists share its importance when
understanding advertising through visual examples. Once analyzing an example of
digital advertising, these separate theories will serve as an ... Show more content on

According to certain mythologies, Barthes main interest was in semiology. He is
highly skilled at finding, manipulating and exploiting theories and concepts of how
things come to mean before anyone else does so. The basics of semiotics and how it
is applied to many forms of imagery and context is applied through Barthes theory.
This theory consists of three orders of specification, denotation, connotation and myth
(Chandler 2006,18).
Within semiotics, denotation and connotation are terms describing the relationship
between the signifier and its signified, and an analytic distinction is made between
two types of signifiers: denotative signified and a connotative signified (Panofsky
1970a,51 3). This meaning includes both denotation and connotation through the
action and reaction of the representation of signs.
Denotation is described as the definitional, literal or obvious meaning of a sign
according to the art historian Erwin Panofsky (Hasenmueller 1978). The denotation
of a representational visual image is what all viewers from any culture and at any
time would recognise the image as depicting (Hasenmueller 1978). As Roland Barthes
noted, De Saussure created a model of signs that focused on denotation at the expense
of connotation and it was left to subsequent theorists to offer an account of this
important dimension of meaning (Barthes
Siamese Cats Research Paper
Siamese cats are a beautiful work of art that have survived since the 14th century.
Siamese cats originate from Thailand and are one of the oldest oriental/Asian cat
breed. Their original name was Siam, but it was later changed to Siamese. Theses
cats have been around for over ten centuries and are continuing to grow their cat
population. Siamese cats have a wide variety of characteristics. They are intelligent,
curious, playful, affection and loud. Not to mention they have excellent, strong bonds
with the others around them. Some of their most distinctive characteristics and
features are their tanzanite blue eyes and their blackish brown ears, paws, tail and

How Cinema and Theater Convey Pleasure in the Acts of Search and Lust
In her essay, Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema , British film maker Laura
Mulvey attempts to demystify how pleasure can be fulfilled in film. Contending that
a pleasure in looking (scopohilia) and a pleasure in possessing the female as what to
be looked at (voyeurism) fufills the audience s desires, Mulvey suggests how
filmmakers use this knowledge to create film that panders to our innate desires. In
Meshes of the Afternoon by Maya Deren and Vertigoby Alfred Hitchcock, it is seen
that Mulvey s argument the desire to look, the hunting, seeking, and watching, and
harnessing of the female form is natural human desire. Deren and Hitchcock will use

Important first is understanding what Mulvey is suggesting what it actually means to
derive pleasure from a work as she sees it. She divides pleasure into two categories
voyeurism and scopophilia that for her represent the complete fulfillment of human
desires in a work. The question as to whether they can coexist harmoniously is the
critical component of Hitchcock and Deren. The difference between these two
artists and others, as it will soon be seen, is their uncanny ability to play toward
both the need to look and the need to objectify women as the image of that look
and do so in such a seamless manner that it can escape the audience s attention.
How, artistically, do you implement Mulvey s suggestion that there is some desire
to be gained by the idea of looking and seeking in art? There is a mirroring duality
to much of this voyeurism we enjoy in cinema. The extreme contrast between the
darkness of the auditorium (which also isolates spectators from one another) and
the active search playing out on screen allow the individual audience members to
feel voyeuristic as they watch in on someone else s narrative (Mulvey, 2184). It is
dark and secretive, and they can watch in as Scottie, for example, attempts to figure
out the enigmatic woman of his fantasy. As he watches, so does the audience, and it
is within this complex stacking of pleasure that the audience own desires are fully
realized. Mainstream film , where Mulvey places Vertigo

Topic Sentences and Supporting Paragraphs
Topic Sentences
When you write, you form paragraphs. A paragraph is a group of sentences that relate
in topic and thought. A paragraph generally consists of three to five sentences and
usually begins with a topic sentence. A topic sentence is a general statement that
announces what the paragraph is about. By starting a paragraph with a topic sentence,
your audience may immediately identify your topic. This construction also helps you,
the writer, stay focused on your subject.

Transitions are words used to move readers smoothly from one sentence to another or
from one paragraph to another. Think of transitions as traffic signals alerting readers
to the direction your writing takes, based on the relationship between the ideas within
or between paragraphs.

Review Of Dracula By Bram Stoker
Blood Lust The amount of crazed vampire stories within this world continuously
grows despite the amount of creativity that can go into the description, and
characterization of said vampires being quite limited. There would only be so many
possibilities for scenes, situations, and character designs if authors went by nothing
more than the characteristics of the vampires in Bram Stokers Dracula. Because of
this, authors continue to create more and more ridiculous scenarios as well as
more and more advanced vampires. The comparison of the way vampires look,
respond to environmental stimuli, and act in social situations in books like Dracula
or The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod, as well as book series such as Blood Lad and
Twilight, is quite drastic. Every vampirein movies or novels essentially has the same
cold body functions of the dead pale, chilled flesh, lack of a heartbeat. Dracula had
these characteristics, along with being clad in black... who is clean shaven aside
from a long, white moustache. Dracula lived in a Gothic era where he wore a
double breasted vest, white shirt, black slacks, fancy shoes, a pocket watch, and a
fake smile on his face. These kind looks, as well as his charisma, made people trust
him more. In the novel, it is written that ...The count s greeting is so warm that the
Englishman s fears vanish. Modern vampires, unlike Dracula, tend to typically look
and act more like teenagers. They are clothed in hooded sweaters, t shirts, and jeans.
Julia Butterfly Hill American Heroin Essay example
Why should I care about some lady living in a tree? Is the question that I asked
myself before I read the book В‘The Legacy of Luna . Like most people, I glanced
at its contents ran my fingers through the pages and decided that it would not interest
me. However it was not long before I changed my mind after reading about her
magnificent inner strength and my doubts were soon disbanded for I began to realize
its inspiration and the author s inner strength.
В‘The Legacy of Luna is filled with self determination, love and sacrifice. These
commodities outline the path of which Julia embarked upon to discover her true
character. It s an epic battle between our heroine of the novel and her oppressors, also

It was at this very moment that she realized that one of her goals was to be protector
of these majestic trees.
Upon her volunteering for a tree sit (something she knew nothing about) in her
effort to become part of the solution, her journey began. Her calling in life had
found her, and she was determined not to shirk her responsibilities, but rather live up
to the task she believed to have been presented with. So strongly she felt about this
task, that she was very determined to overcome any obstacles that could be put in her
way.
Julia speaks of her childhood at the very beginning of the novel. She speaks of her
preparations for the challenges of life, how she was poor and deprived of luxuries
that most children desired and how religion played a very important roll in her
families life.
Indeed, Julia was the daughter of a preacher and this family environment set the tone
of her spiritual beliefs and morals. One may argue that her home environment may
have prepared her well for the future events, considering she did not abandon her
spiritual feeling when she came upon the redwoods in the park.
She survived sorrowful nights, braved many a storm and kept her strength against
media scrutiny. To add insult to injury she also survived the harsh battle with
lumbering organizations as well as the opposition from the home team as even some
of her fellow activists stood against her.

Thanks to men like Christopher Columbus the world became an explorer s oyster.
The findings of new created much curiosity in Europe to explore and conquer new
lands in order to expand their empire. In the early 1600 s a surge of motivation to
explore and settle new colonies came over England. The Result of this was the New
England and Chesapeake colonies, who were both settled by immigrants from
England. Many people decided they needed to escape England due to religious
persecution and poverty. Hundreds of families, men, women, and their children,
came in search of a New World where they could have a new start. Despite the

This further emphasizes their intentions by showing their main priorities; minters
to create a religion based society as well as followers, in this case his family. On
the other hand other people s motivation to come to the New World was
commercial and profit. This is the case with the founding fathers of the
Chesapeake colonies. The Chesapeake region of the colonies included Virginia,
Maryland, the New Jerseys and Pennsylvania. In 1607, the first English colony in
the New World, Jamestown, was founded by a group of 104 settlers along the
James River. These settlers were hungry for gold and silver. This is emphasized in
the Ship s list of Emigrants (doc 3) where they state that the men listed should be
transported to Virginia embarked in the Merchant s Hope. Though the settlers of the
Chesapeake Colonies desired religious freedom it was not their main focus when
coming to the New World, they wanted to be merchants; in other words they wanted
money! Captain John Smith further highlights the intentions of the Chesapeake
settlers in History of Virginia (doc 5) which was written for the pure purpose of
informing future people of the origins of Virginia. Smith refers to the men as gold
seekers who made all men their slaves in their hope that they would become wealthy
and discover incredible riches from this new land. Because of the contrasting reasons
for settlement these two colonies became extremely different.
The Life and Presidency of John F. Kennedy Essay
John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States, was a man of
great knowledge. For example as a child he would discuss politics at the dinner
table. When he was in school he attended a number of academies and private
schools. He went to some of the greatest Ivy League colleges in the world, which
helped lead him to the White House. Sadly his life was taken at the young age of 46,
but his legacy still continues.
John F. Kennedy was born to Joseph Patrick Kennedy and Rose Fitzgerald on May

John was also a war hero. He was in the bombing of Pearl Harbor where he brought
eleven men to safety where only two died. He received the Purple Heart, as well as
the Navy and Marine Corps Medal, and for the first he had felt like he had outshone
his brother Joe.
When he finally ran for president his opponents said he was rich and spoiled and

not say he didn t have the energy and drive to do what he loved. John won and he
couldn t have been happier, his first day in office was January 20th, 1961. John
was a very charismatic person. He was very appealing to all people and this was
one thing that helped him win his presidency. He was an amazing speaker and
very inspirational. He helped end WWII and that s why a lot of people like him.
Lee Harvey Oswald assassinated John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963 in Dallas,
Texas. Lyndon Johnson took his place of presidency. He was a good president, but he

Erikson Nature Vs Nurture
Studied and debated for generations, is the conflict of Nature versus Nurture in the
development of the human population; nature being the genetics that makes up the
new human being and nurture being any other influences in the environment, such
as: pre natal health, care givers, location of development, education systems, and
more. Some regard all happenings in a life time to genetics. Everyone is pre
destined by the genes from their parents to do certain things. An example of this
would be if the child s parents are both in jail, then the child would be a criminal as
well; or if both parents are saints than the child will be an innocent being. As Berger

Microsystems being what we commonly consider to be the nurture of a child, family

Then there is the mesosystem which is the combining of all other groups. This belief

John Donne s Metaphysical Poetry
John Donne s metaphysical poetry is where theology crosses with sexuality. The
connection between spiritual love and erotic love becomes apparent. Throughout
his whole life Donne found love in everything. In his early life his focus was on
the love of women, and then it transitioned to the love of his wife, and ultimately
the love of God. His work defines the unity of these contrasting ideals in every man
and woman. Batter my Heart and The Ecstasy displayed the connection that can be
found between erotic love and divine love. There are also characteristics with each
piece of Donne s work that can be identified as crossovers from erotic and divine.
Early in Donne s career his initial pieces of literature were defined as his love poetry,
while his later work was primarily his Holy Sonnets. It can be perceived that through
his love poetry Donne establishes his ideals on love. Through his writing of The
Ecstasy , Donne is able to relay his experiences of love and that love is experienced
through the body, soul, or both. His work emphasized that it can either be a religious
or sensual experience. For The Ecstasy Donne conveys a complex viewpoint towards
erotic pleasure in comparison to the full understanding of love. His poem urges the
readers to rejuvenate their souls through a sensual connection that results in ecstasy.
This idea bashes the conventional idea of the time period that the soul and body are
separate; that sexual pleasure does not create a bond between the

Nussbaum also believes that the stereotypical portrayal of homosexuals and the
homophobia towards homosexuals is created by a disgust and that disgust is is what
makes minority groups look inferior to majority groups. Nussbaum believes that
projective disgust plays no proper role in arguing for legal regulation, because of the
emotion s irrationality and its connection to stigma and hierarchy...Disgust, however,
often prevents us from looking for those good reasons, creating the misleading
impression that the policy has already been well defended. Turning it to legitimize

Nussbaum nicely puts it that religion and sexual identity should be a way for
people to express themselves because we may think other people [are] wrong and
sinful in matters of the deepest moral importance while yet agreeing that respect for
them as an equal citizens requires according them a broad sphere of liberty of both
thought and conduct (Nussbaum, 41). Nussbaum explains through cases of race,
gender, and disabilities why these are analogous to the case of sexual orientation. She
makes this statement because she believes that law prohibiting same sex marriage

range of areas because of that trait (Nussbaum, 44). With disabilities, while the

argument for why sexuality should be treated the same way as these groups in cases

to have more greedy, and political motives. The start of the inquisition is usually

the year of 1478 and lasted until the year of 1834 when Ferdinand and Isabella

Seville, there was an archdeacon named Martinez who constantly tried to set off
the people to purge themselves of the dirty Jewish people. After, many reproach the

Martinez motivated the crowd to riot. The crowd moved towards the Jewish quarter.
Police captured some of the people and flogged or beaten, even that wasn t enough
to stop the mob. While they didn t succeed that day to destroy the Jews, the feeling
that Martinez had grew strong until June 6 when the mob sacked the Juderia of

Great Gatsby Color Symbolism
During the 1920 s, many people would disguise themselves through the identities of
someone else. In the novel, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the main
characters can be seen hiding behind the symbolism of different colors. Color affects
the mood, emphasizes the importance of events in a novel, and can also interact with
the personalities of the characters. The concept of colorsymbolism is prominent in the
novel. White, yellow, blue, green, and even the color black affect the atmosphere of
scenes through association with a specific mood, and also through the actions of the
characters.

When Gatsby was stopped by the police for speeding, he got out of it by taking a
white card from his wallet, and waving it before the man s eyes (Fitzgerald 68).
This here shows how innocent Gatsby can be, just by using something white.
When we turn our focus to Nick, we see that he believes that he himself in the most
honest person he knows, and how he is usually dressed in white to symbolize his
innocence. An important event in the novel is when Nick goes to Gatsby s party
for the first time, Dressed up in white flannels, I went over to his lawn a little after
seven (Fitzgerald 47). Nick dressing in white symbolizes how he is immaculate,
unlike the others at the party who could be labeled as corrupt. White traditionally
symbolizes purity, and there is no doubt that Fitzgerald wants to underscore the
ironic disparity between the purity of the characters, and their actual corruption
(Schneider 146). The color yellow can be connected with the symbolism of greed,
desire for wealth, and old money . Corruption is also distinctly represented by yellow,
but death is also a key to yellows dark symbolism. The color yellow can be seen
around a tragic death. The first time this is seen is when Myrtle is killed. She is the
mistress of Tom, and is also married to a man named George Wilson. Myrtle was
killed by Gatsby s yellow Rolls Royce, in front of her yellow brick house, and under
the yellow spectacled eyes of Dr.
Literary Techniques In Hemingway s Hills Like White
Elephants
In Hemingway s Hills like White Elephants , he uses literary techniques such as direct
language, characterization through dialogue, compression, and direct presentation.
Through his use of these techniques, he skillfully creates an unattached tone in his
narrator. Hemingway also, uses a limited third person point of view, which takes
away the ability for the narrator to state how the character is feeling or thinking. In
short, I agree with the statement that Hemingway makes it impossible for the reader
to become emotionally attached because he erases emotions from the character s
altogether and creates an unattached narrator. Hemingway uses a limited third person
point of view in Hills like White Elephants . This eliminates the thinking

Before I Got My Eye Put Out Meaning
What is Sight? Just because you have sight does not mean you can see. Poems can
have lots of meaning, power, and persuasion. Great examples of this is We grow
accustomed to the dark and Before I got my eye put out . Both have different
meanings of sight, which can change how you think of the meaning of sight. Emily
Dickinson, the author of these poems, started to have aches and pain in her eyes
which slowly was depleting her sight. But this disability never stopped her from
being able to see . We grow accustomed to the dark focuses on every aspect of the
word sight . It can be perceived as literalor metaphorical. While Before I got my eye
put out is only talking about the literal aspect of sight .
We grow accustomed to the dark talks about sight in a literal and metaphorical sense.

Psychokinesis
Almost a century ago, there was this pioneer researcher named J. B. Rhine. He was
investigating ESP or so called Esper, and it is where someone can sense things, not
physically, but mentally. He then got side tracked when a gambler came into his lab
and told him that they could roll a pair of dice and the dice would land in their favor.
Rhine then was inspired by the thought and began investigating and experimenting
multiple types of Psychokinesis. Psychokinesis is the movement of objects without
physical touch but only by the sense of matter. There are many different types of
psychokinesis. Such as, telekinesis (control of movement over physical matter),
pyrokinesis (control over fire), aerokinesis (control over air), hydrokinesis (control
over water), and photokinesis (control over light). These traits have not been proven
still to this day and scientists have been trying to find someone that can move
something just as small as a feather besides by blowing across the object. Teenagers,
at puberty, seem to express an interest in developing telekinesis sometimes linked
with other psychic interests. These might include telepathy, a feeling of not being
from this planet or a connection with aliens, and poltergeist activity linked to
telekinetic activity. Some teenagers move on with channeling through Ouija boards

China’s Education System
Education is the process of learning and acquiring knowledge at school from a
teacher, receiving knowledge at home from a parent, a family member, and even
friend. Education is a key that allows people to move up in the world, seek better
jobs, and succeed in life. Education is one factor that affects job positions people
hold, advance in their further career, the income they make, and the title they hold.
The more educated a person is, the more prestige and power that person holds.
Educationimproves the quality of life, reduces ignorance, and exposes frontiers and
opportunities not previously handled. Education also focuses on the values, attitudes
and behaviors that enable individuals to learn to live together in a world characterized

The similarities include administering a nationwide exam given to all the students.
All students are equally evaluated based on these scores. The test is used to
determine which university students are able to attend. There are also significant
differences between these exams. In America the exams are called the SAT or the
ACT. In China it is named Gaokao. The Gaokao test is taken very seriously. This
test is taken for multiple days. Parents rent hotel rooms nearby so their student can
have a quiet lunch and take a nap. Some Chinese students go insane for this exam.
They study for the Gaokao while hooked up to IV drips. The IV drips contain amino
acids which would provide the students with extra energy (Kristof). This would
definitely never be allowed in U.S. And lastly, merit pay is different in China than
U.S. The Chinese believe in merit pay and in using student test scores for teacher
evaluation. For example, when the 9th graders leave middle school they are tested to
see which high school they are qualified to attend. Since the same teachers have had
those students for three years, they compare their entry score to their exit score. The
classes that showed the most academic gain resulted in that banzhuren receiving a
bonus that might range from 3000 Yuan to 6000 Yuan (one month or two months
pay). The same is true at the high school level. This is not the case in America.
Teachers are evaluated through principals attending the classroom setting and/or
My Four Wheelers-Personal Narrative
Learning and trying something new can be a scary experience. One of the scariest
things I have ever had to do was when I drove my four wheeler by myself for the
first time. It was a hot summer day, just like it had been that whole summer. It was
the summer of 2012 and Preston Herfurth, Lucas Christians and I were sitting on
our four wheelers. I was twelve, and Preston and Lucas were fourteen. We were in
my gravel pit, enjoying the view. The gravel pit was wide and long, about a
quarter of a mile long each way. There was tall, pine green weeds growing on the
sides of the pit. There was a pond in the middle, with a navy blue pontoon hooked up
to the dock. There was slight breeze, just enough so I wasn t sweating too much.
Preston, Lucas and I... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was going smoothly until I was about half way down, when all of a sudden I hit
the front brakes. The front wheels stopped and the back end of the four wheeler
flipped over the front part. The four wheeler flipped three times before it reached
the bottom of the hill. I looked up and I was laying on the sand, about half way down
the hill. I walked to the bottom of the hill to see if the four wheeler was alright. I
looked it over and it was still running so I knew it was good to go! I got back on it
and I felt something weird on my leg. I looked down and there is a huge cut leg in
my leg. There is blood pouring out of it and I started freaking out. I showed the
guys and they brought me up to my grandma s house who lived near by. I got in her
tan car and she drove me to the emergency

company was changed to Food Machinery Corporation(FMC). A contract was
recieved by FMC with regard to the designing as well as building of amphibious
vehicles that were landing tracked for the War Department of the United States in

What Happened To Happen To Please And Thank You Essay
Changing of behavior is a serious issue in today s world. According to Today,
Courtesy Isn t Common, But Hatred Is by L.L.Nhu, he believes children s behaviors
are changing is because the parents do not teach their children good manners. So the
ways of teaching children become important in children s development. T.T.Nhu also
thought that parents should tell the mistakes that their children made in front of
people, when their children behave badly and make mistakes. Parents should not
talk about it quietly because that would not make their children realize their faults.
In addition, Parents are focus on their work and do not discipline their children very
well in their daily life. So, children are allowed to do anything they want, like

There have several stories that show what people thought of the inequality in the
article What Happen To Please And Thank You! Some stories in this article show
why people are impolite to others; when someone does not have civility or do
nothing to others When Jane was nine months pregnant, she was having trouble
getting out of her car. A coworker was stared at her, but he did not offer help to Jane
because he thought that Jane was a strong and independent woman. Even though
Jane is a strong and independent woman, but it does not mean that she does not
need help from others. As a polite person, one should have offer help to others when
one sees that someone needed his help. But Jane s coworker did not do so, which
shows that he is an impolite person, and it also shows that there is an inequality of
mannerism between men and women. Therefore, the reason of the social fabric
breaking down was the inequality, the reason why the inequality between female and
male is that their parents have not ever taught their children, that they have to be kind
and help someone who needs their
Southwest Airlines Flight From Baltimore Washington...
In order to visit my family in Rhode Island over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend,
I decided that the quickest travel option would be to take a Southwest Airlines
flight from Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI) to T.F. Green
Airport (PVD). Anticipating the high volume of people also trying to travel
during the holiday season, I decided to arrive at the airport couple of hours early to
ensure that I would be able to check my bags, go through TSA security, and have
enough time to go to the restroom before boarding for Southwest began. Between
the time of arrival at the airport and the time a plane leaves the gate for take off, I
noticed that within the airport, in order to eventually board their respective aircrafts,
travelers must navigate through multiple queues, which are line[s] of persons waiting
in turn to be served, according, to order of arrival (Mann, 3). In engaging in these
queues, passengers are participating in serially coordinated actions, in which multiple
peopleare attempting to do the same thing at the same time, such that some must wait
while others engage in the activity. After checking their luggage with their respective
airlines, travelers must go through the TSA Security Checkpoint in order to be
admitted onto the concourse. The process of moving through TSA could be
considered a compound (sequentially linked) queue, where a single larger action is
accomplished over multiple queues. Once passengers move through the first queue of
Legalization Essay
The legalization of marijuana
The Legalization of Marijuana
For the last fifty or so years it has been a crime to possess, consume, or distribute
marijuana. Any rapid change in legislation toward legalization would be impossible
in today s culture. Due mostly to the overwhelming popularity of this drug it could
never possibly be legalized. Any ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With no legal restraints on the flow of this drug huge legal quantities would always
be available to who ever wanted to use it. This constant availability would encourage
over use and reckless use. Social productivity would probably be affected. It is still
under debate weather or not marijuana affects performance, but any new change in
lifestyle (such as drug use) has been linked to drastic changes in lifestyle.
New users would also be overwhelmed by their use. Every aspect of their lives would
be affected, both positive and negative changes would occur. The adjustment to the
new changes would cause the new user to make changes in their lives, and this
adjustment might be just as detrimental to them as the use of the marijuana.
It is a widely known fact that marijuana is the number one cash crop in America. If
marijuana were legalized many people would seize the opportunity to profit from its
distribution. Marijuana would become exploited by modern society. Unless the
government were to regulate marijuana transactions large corporations would make
enormous amounts of money. Like the cigarette industry, advertisements would lure
potential users and clutter our visual environment with useless slogans and catch
phrases with seductive models scantly clad with marijuana associated apparel.
If the government were to regulate marijuana society would never be completely

Jesse Owens Essay.pdfJesse Owens Essay. Jesse owens. Remembering Jesse Owens, The Man Who Fought Racism And Defied Hitler To ...

  • 1. Jesse Owens Essay Crafting an essay on the subject of Jesse Owens can be a challenging yet rewarding endeavor. While Owens' life and achievements offer a wealth of material to explore, the difficulty lies in striking the right balance between detailing his groundbreaking accomplishments and providing a nuanced understanding of the historical context in which he lived. Research is paramount in creating a comprehensive Jesse Owens essay. Delving into primary sources, biographies, and historical accounts is essential to grasp the intricate details of his life, the challenges he faced, and the impact he made on both sports and society. However, the abundance of information can be overwhelming, requiring meticulous selection and organization of facts to weave a coherent narrative. Another challenge lies in avoiding a mere recitation of Owens' achievements. The goal is not only to list his medals and records but to delve into the significance of his triumphs in the face of racial discrimination and the political climate of the time. Balancing the personal and the historical, the essay should capture Owens as both an individual and a symbol of resilience and courage. Moreover, addressing the complexity of Owens' legacy presents an additional hurdle. While he is celebrated for breaking racial barriers and defying Hitler's ideology during the 1936 Olympics, it is crucial to acknowledge the ongoing racial challenges faced by African Americans despite Owens' success. The art of essay writing involves not just conveying information but also engaging the reader. Finding a compelling angle, constructing a persuasive argument, and maintaining a cohesive structure are all vital elements. Crafting a conclusion that leaves a lasting impression without oversimplifying Owens' impact adds another layer of difficulty. In conclusion, writing an essay on Jesse Owens demands a careful balance of historical accuracy, personal narrative, and critical analysis. It requires a deep understanding of the subject, a skillful integration of research, and an ability to present complex ideas in a coherent and engaging manner. While challenging, the process can be immensely rewarding, offering an opportunity to explore the life of an iconic figure and the broader social and historical context. If you find the task overwhelming, assistance is available, and similar essays or even more extensive academic support can be ordered on platforms like HelpWriting.net. • 2. Mental Illness Is A Social Problem Mental illness is a health condition that affects an individual s moods and thinking in a way that changes how that person relates to other people in society. The functioning of the affected person is also altered and usually results in the person failing to perform some of the daily activities that the person has previously engaged in. Mental illness can be considered a combination of both social and health complications, affecting the social life of the people who fall victim in many ways (Elliott Huizinga, 2012). There are some health complications that are also experienced with mental disorders. It is also important to note that medical attention forms part of the therapies that try to correct or control this condition. More recently most concern has been on the fact that mental illness is a major social problem in the world (Gonzalez Rosenheck, 2014). It has been reported that the number of people with mental disorder is increasing in our communities at an alarming rate. Environmental and social changes are among the most mentioned causes of the accelerating rate of mental illness in society (HГ¤fner, 1985). Despite the prevalence, about one fifth of the adult population will battle with mental illness every year ( Facts and figures about mental illness, 2014) and the acknowledgement of authorities mental illness is still given less attention then is needed to treat the problem successfully. Health bodies need to be putting more resources into this area as

  • 4. Alice In Wonderland Essay As we read Alice s Adventures in Wonderland and The Island of Dr. Moreau, we enter into two unique worlds of imagination. Both Lewis Carroll and H.G. Wells describe lands of intrigue and mystery. We follow Alice and Prendick into two different worlds where animals speak, evolution is tested, and reality is bent until it nearly breaks. It is the masterminds of Lewis Carroll and H.G. Wellsthat take these worlds of fantasy and make them realistic. How do these two great authors make the unbelievable believable? Both Alice s Adventures in Wonderlandand The Island of Dr. Moreaufloat in between a dream world and reality, which makes the real seem unbelievable and the unbelievable seem real. In H.G. Wells s The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is later in the story, where reality really becomes deformed. First, Prendick is locked out of the inner rooms of the enclosure, because of their little secrets. Second, Prendick walks out into the woods to get away from the puma s crying. It is hear that he gets a good look at one of the deformities for the first time. Then I saw it was a man, going on all fours like a beast! (pg. 38). It is this sight that sends Prendick s imagination wild. The thicket about me became altered to my imagination. Every shadow became something more than a shadow, became an ambush, every rustle became a threat. Invisible things seemed watching me (pg. 39). It is these emotions of Prendick s that make the unbelievable seem real. He has gone from a sane man with some studies in science to a man who fears the shadows and sees men walk on all fours. The dream state of everything at this time keeps us believing that anything is possible. This is the same technique that Lewis Carroll uses in Alice s Adventures in Wonderland. The story begins with Alice getting tired, which implies that she is falling asleep and going to enter the fantastic world of dreams. Immediately, she sees a white rabbit in a waistcoat. This puts the reader directly into the world of fantasy and imagination. It is Carroll s use of explanations that makes this unbelievable world seem real. No matter how strange something appears it has a
  • 5. To What Extent Does Schlink in His Novel “the Reader”,... Essay Response To The Reader To what extent does Schlink in his novel The Reader , show that it is impossible to escape one s past. In his novel The Reader , author Bernhard Schlink through the use of techniques such as structure, setting and characterisation reveals to an immense extent that it is impossible to escape one s past. Schlink utilises the main protagonists of the text, Michael and Hanna, depicting their relationship, along with the idea of post war German guilt to further represent this idea. Michael is only fifteen when he first encounters Hanna, after this crucial point in the novel Michael and Hanna s relationship eventuates and ultimately he falls in love with her, creating a physical and emotional connection... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Schlink portrays Michael s attempt to alleviate both Hanna s and his own feelings of guilt sourced from their relationship and Hanna s involvement in the crime in the quote, She knew what she had done to people in the camp...she dealt with it intensively during her last years in prison pg 211, Chapter 11, Part 3. The idea of being unable to escape the guilt of your past is shown by Schlink through the increasing negative consequences of Michael and Hanna s relationship that result from the setting of post war Germany. Through the characterisation of Hanna, Schlink deeply demonstrates that the past was impossible to escape. One of the main components of Hanna s character is that she was illiterate. Many of Hanna s past decisions that greatly affect the present are based in her illiteracy. One of these decisions was to become an SS guard at a concentration camp, and it s this decision that causes her to be tried for crimes committed during WWII, and convicted to life in prison. The idea that due to her illiteracy Hanna was tried and sent to prison is a clear representation of Hanna being unable to escape her past. Schlink uses Hanna s trial of her accused war crimes as a symbol of her illiteracy coming back into her life, further demonstrating that she was not able to escape her past. This is shown in the quote, Her struggle was not limited to the trial. She was struggling as she had always struggled. Pg 133, Chapter
  • 6. Early Childhood Caries ( Ecc ) Chapter 1 Early childhood caries (ECC), which is commonly known as tooth decay among children younger than 6 years of age, is currently affecting nearly half of the United States 5 year olds, despite it being highly preventable (Hirsch, Edelstein, Frosh, Anselmo, 2012). No mother wants their children to be prone to dental decay or make them suffer from this disease if it is not necessary. According to Kawashita, Kitamura, Saito, and Corporation (2011), Children experiencing caries as infants or toddlers have a much greater probability of subsequent caries in both the primary and permanent dentitions. The problem with early childhood caries starts with lack of parental education and poor oral hygiene. ECC, can be referred to as baby bottle tooth decay and many parents don t realize how detrimental it can be for the baby s oral health or maybe don t even realize that they have been putting their baby at risk. I am doing this research to explore whether it is better for the baby to receive milk out of a bottle or to breastfeed in relation to early childhood caries. I also want to give uneducated parents effective ways to prevent and treat ECC, if it does happen to occur. I gathered the information for my research from peer reviewed websites on google scholar. I want to become more educated on the subject to explain to my patients who are expecting what precautions they should be aware of and hopefully prevent future risk of early childhood caries for their infants.
  • 7. Migratory Implications Of Media On Interracial Relationships Migratory Implications in Media on Interracial Relationships James M. Oscher Jr. University of Nevada Las Vegas Migratory Implications in Media on Interracial Relationships Just over 50 years ago the United States Supreme Court overturned and nationalized the ruling on interracial marriage. Since then there has been an ever increasing amount of interracial marriages, along with interracial relationships. Since then there also has been a greater increase in the public being exposed to mass media. There have been numerous studies on interracial relationships, with variables like wars, legal matters, immigration and even military occupation. We will examine in this paper if media exposure has an impact on cross cultural or interracial relationship in relation to immigration to the United States. I reason that there is a correlation between public opinion views and legal status of immigration to views on interracial relationships. We see a recent example of this with Barack Obama s successful campaign for the presidency of the United States, Halle Berry s Oscar win in 2002, multiracial and multinational collaborations and successes in music, and a visible rise in ethnically ambiguous models and celebrities (Washington, 2012). Literature Review To understand the position taken we must look at migration out of the United States to understand the implications in immigration. In Maggie BГ¶hm and Derrick Shapley (2013) they examine the data from PUMS from 1970 to

Coastal habitats extend from the shoreline at the beach to the edge of the continental shelf, way out further than swimming distance. These habitats are home to many kinds of life including fish, corals, birds and even bacteria. All these organisms are part of a long and complex food web and all depend on each other to survive. These ecosystems also provide a vast number of animals with protection from predators and are also extremely important to humans by providing a rich source of food and income through fishing and aquatic activities. They also support species by providing humans with half the oxygen we breathe to survive and they can support species that serve as animal feed, fertilizers, additives in food, make up and medicines. Other organisms of this habitat aid in protection and structure such as mangroves and seagrasses which protect the coastline from wave action and erosion. • 11. Women s Roles During The European Renaissance Essay 2 Today s first world society is undergoing substantial changes in the social sector of human civilization. The topics of race, sex, and homosexuality are at the top of debated philosophies and ideals and how they fit into society. These same principals underwent changes in the time of the European Renaissance which has shaped many of our views on these issues and topics today. Women s roles in society and their rights, the emergence of raceissues and troubles, and the topic of homosexuals and how they are to be perceived may sound like topics on the headlines of newspapers today yet they were the same topics that were debated and discussed about throughout Italy, Spain, and other parts of Europe centuries ago. For it was then,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This was no different for the people of the Renaissance hundreds of years later. It was not however until the turn of the fourteenth century that larger and larger quantities of blacks began to enter the European continent through trade, slavery, or free will. Often having a slave or servant of black color was seen as another display of great wealth, due to how hard it was to acquire them at this point in time. While in later centuries some people would have hundreds of slaves working for them, at the time of the Renaissance having ten was an immense quantity. While seen as considerable usage to economic needs, they were socially looked down upon due to the Europeans extreme belief in religion. The problem extends from the idea that God was the shining light and light is white in color, therefore the black Africans must be the opposite of God and be instead creations of Lucifer. This could even be seen in the artwork of the time where the Devil was painted as a black man in Medieval times, and this trend continued onto the Renaissance. However there was the opposite idea that blackness stood for emptiness and sorrow and mourning, two qualities which were praised very highly by priests and other devout Christians. It would not be for centuries to come that these religious

Developed by Edna Foa, prolonged exposure therapy exposes patients to their traumatic event over and over again while being in a safe place (Blankenship 277). Although prolonged exposure therapy is one treatment it has four main elements including education, breathing retraining, in vivo exposure, and imaginal exposure. Education consists of learning about the treatment, treatment symptoms, and goals of the treatment. Breathing retraining helps patients to relax and calm themselves when they become anxious. In vivo exposure allows patients with PTSD to be put in real life situations that they are not comfortable with due to the trauma they have faced. Lastly, imaginal exposure allows the patients with post traumatic stress disorder to talk through their traumatic event while it is recorded. After repeatedly talking through their event, the patient then listens to what they have said (Swan 28). Prolonged exposure therapy occurs over eight to fifteen sessions. Each session can range from 60 to 90 minutes depending on the patient and their specific needs (Blankenship 278). This treatment helps patients with post traumatic stress disorder by allowing them to face their fears associated with the traumatic event and gain control over their emotions (Swan 28). Prolonged exposure therapy is proven to be a very effective therapy and is highly supported for the use of treating PTSD (Blankenship

In general, at first, a non paid intern doing the work of a paid worker seems great for the organization. But in the end it may prove to hurt both the company and the unpaid intern. Having a publishing intern who files papers could work out ethical and legally if the internship program contains a well designed training program. According to the Fair Labor Standard Act, any unpaid intern must not provide any direct benefits to the company (Noe et al., 228). Unpaid interns exist in the organization for educational benefits. According to the U.S Small Business Administration, filing papers and answering emails are considered activities which provide direct benefits to an organization; therefore they must be paid (Beesly). Knowing this information, in the case of the publishing intern, s/he must be paid if the company wants them to file papers because they are providing the company benefits. The U.S. Department of Labor Wage and Hour Division state s, educational benefits does not exempt them from having to pay the intern (WHD Staff). At that time in England, the reigning monarch was King George V, with the strong lingering influence of the Edwardian Era in the people, named after Edward VII. At that time, women were given slightly more social status than in previous times, and also rallied and marched for a greater political and social power, and also more rights. Maya Angelou And William Faulkner s Barbie Doll Maya Angelou, William Faulkner, and Marge Piercy all came up with a common theme that society has so many expectations for women and sometimes they lead to terrible things such as insecurities and even death. In Piercy s story, Barbie Doll, a girl is told she is ugly many times so she kills herself by cutting her legs and nose off. Once she is dead, everyone finally says that she is pretty. A Rose for Emily, by William Faulkner is about a womanthat has always been overprotected by her father and when he dies, she goes crazy, leading the town to talk. Maya Angeloutouches the subject of ugly woman with beautiful character when the men in the story cannot figure out why they like the woman in her story, Phenomenal Woman. These texts make use of imagery, irony, metaphors, and similes in order to communicate the theme. Marge Piercy s poem, Barbie Doll, helps us realize how hypocritical society is and how much we criticize and bring other people down. She was advised to play coy, exhorted to come on hearty (lines 12 13). In this example, it shows that people would tell the girlchild to act a certain way, quiet and reserved, but then go back and tell her to act loudly and cheerfully. This example helps to prove my point that society has a lot of expectations for women by using irony. In the casket displayed... everyone said (lines 19 23). This use of imagery helps us understand how girlchild s body looked while it was lied down in her casket. This shows how society has

In semiotics, a sign is anything that stands in for something other than itself. This lesson focuses primarily on linguistic signs. Roland Barthes is a theorist that is particularly interested in how things mean rather than what things mean. Through Barthes and Saussure s theories, the understanding of semiotics through digital advertising will be represented through an argument of comparing these two unique key thinkers. According to certain mythologies, Barthes main interest was in semiology. He is highly skilled at finding, manipulating and exploiting theories and concepts of how things come to mean before anyone else does so. The basics of semiotics and how it is applied to many forms of imagery and context is applied through Barthes theory. This theory consists of three orders of specification, denotation, connotation and myth (Chandler 2006,18). Within semiotics, denotation and connotation are terms describing the relationship between the signifier and its signified, and an analytic distinction is made between two types of signifiers: denotative signified and a connotative signified (Panofsky 1970a,51 3). This meaning includes both denotation and connotation through the action and reaction of the representation of signs. Denotation is described as the definitional, literal or obvious meaning of a sign according to the art historian Erwin Panofsky (Hasenmueller 1978). The denotation of a representational visual image is what all viewers from any culture and at any time would recognise the image as depicting (Hasenmueller 1978). As Roland Barthes noted, De Saussure created a model of signs that focused on denotation at the expense of connotation and it was left to subsequent theorists to offer an account of this important dimension of meaning (Barthes

How Cinema and Theater Convey Pleasure in the Acts of Search and Lust In her essay, Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema , British film maker Laura Mulvey attempts to demystify how pleasure can be fulfilled in film. Contending that a pleasure in looking (scopohilia) and a pleasure in possessing the female as what to be looked at (voyeurism) fufills the audience s desires, Mulvey suggests how filmmakers use this knowledge to create film that panders to our innate desires. Important first is understanding what Mulvey is suggesting what it actually means to derive pleasure from a work as she sees it. She divides pleasure into two categories voyeurism and scopophilia that for her represent the complete fulfillment of human desires in a work. The question as to whether they can coexist harmoniously is the critical component of Hitchcock and Deren. The difference between these two artists and others, as it will soon be seen, is their uncanny ability to play toward both the need to look and the need to objectify women as the image of that look and do so in such a seamless manner that it can escape the audience s attention. How, artistically, do you implement Mulvey s suggestion that there is some desire to be gained by the idea of looking and seeking in art? There is a mirroring duality to much of this voyeurism we enjoy in cinema. The extreme contrast between the darkness of the auditorium (which also isolates spectators from one another) and the active search playing out on screen allow the individual audience members to feel voyeuristic as they watch in on someone else s narrative (Mulvey, 2184). It is dark and secretive, and they can watch in as Scottie, for example, attempts to figure out the enigmatic woman of his fantasy. As he watches, so does the audience, and it is within this complex stacking of pleasure that the audience own desires are fully realized. Mainstream film , where Mulvey places Vertigo

His work defines the unity of these contrasting ideals in every man and woman. Batter my Heart and The Ecstasy displayed the connection that can be found between erotic love and divine love. In short, I agree with the statement that Hemingway makes it impossible for the reader to become emotionally attached because he erases emotions from the character s altogether and creates an unattached narrator. Hemingway uses a limited third person point of view in Hills like White Elephants . This eliminates the thinking

Great examples of this is We grow accustomed to the dark and Before I got my eye put out . Both have different meanings of sight, which can change how you think of the meaning of sight. Emily Dickinson, the author of these poems, started to have aches and pain in her eyes which slowly was depleting her sight. But this disability never stopped her from being able to see . We grow accustomed to the dark focuses on every aspect of the word sight . It can be perceived as literalor metaphorical. While Before I got my eye put out is only talking about the literal aspect of sight . We grow accustomed to the dark talks about sight in a literal and metaphorical sense. Emily Dickinson has a great way of making the readers really think about what they just read. Not only is the poem powerful and intriguing, you question what you ... The metaphorical picture that it can paint in your mind is that someone that is in the darkness , unknown, will not know how to do something, for example ride a bike. The scientists go on to say that the existence of a rich Ir anomaly on a global scale within the K/T boundary layers of both marine and continental facies has been interpreted as highly impressive evidence for an impact origin. Another discovery that may serve as a marker of an event is microspherules. A variety of microsherules have been discovered in the PTB layers of the Meishan section (Xu et al., 1989). The origin of the microspherules could be multiple. They are small circular indentations in the rocks and the most abondent elements are Si or Si Al. Mircospherules are similar to cosmic dust. He was investigating ESP or so called Esper, and it is where someone can sense things, not physically, but mentally. He then got side tracked when a gambler came into his lab and told him that they could roll a pair of dice and the dice would land in their favor. Rhine then was inspired by the thought and began investigating and experimenting multiple types of Psychokinesis. Psychokinesis is the movement of objects without physical touch but only by the sense of matter. There are many different types of psychokinesis. Such as, telekinesis (control of movement over physical matter), pyrokinesis (control over fire), aerokinesis (control over air), hydrokinesis (control over water), and photokinesis (control over light). These traits have not been proven still to this day and scientists have been trying to find someone that can move something just as small as a feather besides by blowing across the object. Teenagers, at puberty, seem to express an interest in developing telekinesis sometimes linked with other psychic interests. These might include telepathy, a feeling of not being from this planet or a connection with aliens, and poltergeist activity linked to telekinetic activity. Some teenagers move on with channeling through Ouija boards automatic writing, or other forms of psychic connections. It is all about power and the return of one s powers. There have ... Some Chinese students go insane for this exam. They study for the Gaokao while hooked up to IV drips. The IV drips contain amino acids which would provide the students with extra energy (Kristof). For example, when the 9th graders leave middle school they are tested to see which high school they are qualified to attend. In order to visit my family in Rhode Island over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, I decided that the quickest travel option would be to take a Southwest Airlines flight from Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI) to T.F. Green Airport (PVD). Anticipating the high volume of people also trying to travel during the holiday season, I decided to arrive at the airport couple of hours early to ensure that I would be able to check my bags, go through TSA security, and have enough time to go to the restroom before boarding for Southwest began. Between the time of arrival at the airport and the time a plane leaves the gate for take off, I noticed that within the airport, in order to eventually board their respective aircrafts, travelers must navigate through multiple queues, which are line[s] of persons waiting in turn to be served, according, to order of arrival (Mann, 3). In engaging in these queues, passengers are participating in serially coordinated actions, in which multiple peopleare attempting to do the same thing at the same time, such that some must wait while others engage in the activity. After checking their luggage with their respective airlines, travelers must go through the TSA Security Checkpoint in order to be admitted onto the concourse. The process of moving through TSA could be considered a compound (sequentially linked) queue, where a single larger action is accomplished over multiple queues.
