Initially I used iMovie to cut the clips, remove unnecessary audio and put everything together. I then used Final Cut to add effects to the video such as changes to the speed and the use of reverse. As well as editing software, I also used Garage Band to create a soundtrack and Livetype to make animated titles. I also gained some photoshop skills when I created a poster for the film. All of this software was used on a mac which I can now use efficiently.
How will you develop these skills during A2 Project?: I would to develop these skills and use more advance editing techniques when putting together my music video. I would also like to develop camera skills in order to produce a more professional looking video. I can now use all the software in unison to create something which looks a lot more professional than something produced, for example, only using iMovie.
How will you develop these skills during the A2 project?: I hope to learn more about each piece of software to help increase the productivity of my project. This will mean my project will be a lot smoother.
Research and Planning - What tasks did you complete when preparing to film your sequence? - How did your planning help the smooth progression of your film?
Skills acquired: Before filming the sequence I analysed the opening sequence of a horror film through a 9 frame analysis. I also created a time line of a title sequence which helped me time the titles in my own sequence. Audience research was very important during the initial ideas stage as it helped to develop ideas and create something which would appeal to people. BBFC research was needed during the audience research to ensure appropriate ages were selected. I also created a storyboard which detailed the camera angles and movement that would be used within the sequence. Through all of this planning I managed to get all of my filming done on time and meet my deadlines.
How will you develop these skills during the A2 project?: I will need to do a lot more detailed research for the 3 products I will be producing. Once I have completed research and have come up with my ideas I will need to plan out my filming process to ensure I am managing my time well. I hope to plan efficiently so the filming process is smooth and I don't forget any crucial sections.
Using conventions of real media texts - Which texts did you analyse? - Did you take inspiration from the conventions found from your research.
Skills acquired: The main 4 films I researched were Nightmare on Elm street, Scream, Night of the Living Dead and Urban Legends. These films all fit into different sub genres of Horror and therefore taking inspiration from them all allowed me to create a more versatile and unique sequence. Researching the title sequence from Urban Legends also helped me to plan the timing for the titles in my own sequence. However, I did break a very common convention of most horror films with the fact in the sequence the protagonists are attacked during the day.
How will you develop these skills during the A2 project?: I hope to take more creative control and not conform to the typical conventions of the genre. I would like to challenge some aspects to hopefully make my video interesting and visually enjoyable. I also would like to look at texts in more detail which will allow me to get a better understanding of the conventions. This will make it easier to break conventions and change stereotypes while still allowing the video to be identified within the genre.
Creativity - Were your ideas for your portfolio imaginative and unique or did you adhere to conventions?
Skills acquired: Inspiration from horror films, alongside all of the research and planning aided in the creation of an idea which is very easily identifiable as horror while still having some convention breaking attributes. I think this made the idea creative and interesting even though the narrative was very much conventional.
How will you develop these skills during the A2 project?: I would like to challenge some of the conventions of the genre to make my music video more unique. However, I will be wary not to overdo changes to fundamental conventions because I still want the genre to be clear. I hope to create something interesting that will capture people's attention and will therefore need to be something quite exciting and unique.
