2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Personal Skills Audit
1. Personal Skills Audit Name:_____________Amy Kirby__________________________
Skills acquired How did these skills
contribute to the creation of
your product?
How will you develop these
skills during the A2 project?
Digital technology
- What
equipment/software
packages did you use to
produce your
production?
Photoshop
Slide Share
PowerPoint
Microsoft Word
Pinterest
Prezi
IPhoto
Each software package had its
own contribution to the creation
of my media product, however
some more than others as my
strengths varied due to all the
software’s being new to me.
AS I have used these
software’s throughout AS, I now
feel relatively comfortable to
continue using the skills that I
have developed to help me
create my project for A2.
Post production
- What software did you
use to create your
production?
- Discuss specific features
of the software.
Final Cut Pro
Gargeband
Live Type
Each software in turn
contributed largely to the
creation of my product as I
used Final Cut to create my
product along with garageband
for sound effects and Live type
for text effects.
These skills will develop
throughout A2 as I am probably
going to use these software’s to
complete my final product later
down the line.
2. Research and Planning
- What tasks did you
complete when
preparing to film your
sequence?
- How did your planning
help the smooth
progression of your film?
Risk Assessment
Recce Task
Shooting Schedule
Mind maps
Call Sheet
Story Boards
By planning my film I was
organized and my film
progressed well
By using these skills and
software’s before filming, I was
very organized and knew
exactly where and when my film
was going to be along with
characters.
As I found this technique very
useful, I will use the same
software’s and skills to plan for
my product for A2, such as
making mind maps and having
a shooting schedule to keep me
organized.
Using conventions of real
media texts
- Which texts did you
analyse?
- Did you take any
inspiration from the
conventions found from
your research?
The History of Horror
Detailed Open Sequence
Title Sequence Analysis
Nine Frame Analysis
By researching the horror
genre, I was able to explore
different techniques used
throughout the whole genre and
how sound, text and camera
shots can be used. This
therefore had a contribution to
my final media product as
several different camera shots,
sound effect and texts where
used.
To develop these skills I will
continue to use the same
technique however change
adapt them to suit, for example
looking at a genre of music and
the history of that music also.
Creativity
- were our ideas for your
portfolio imaginative and unique
or did you adhere to
conventions?
For our final product I do feel
that our creative side was quite
strong, however our ideas
where not purely original.
The skills meant that we were
able to come up with ideas
fairly easily however we did
struggle with getting these
ideas across as, as group we
were not very confident.
As a group our imagination and
therefore we where quite a
creative bunch however our
characters within the film where
not very confident. Therefore for
A2 I hope to have strong
characters in front of the
camera.
