The African American Education System
The education system has been around for many years. Although it hasn t always had the same
structure, the general idea of education was always to learn and gain more knowledge to better
one s life and future. While many of the whites were able to easily obtain an education, blacks,
indians, and others had it much harder. This actually contributed to the division of the races as well.
The whites believed they were mighty and powerful, while the minority races had to hide and fight
for their rights. Education was an empowering thing for many people, especially for those without a
say. During the Reconstruction in the New South, African Americans were still being attacked and
so they strike against them and created their own churches and schools.

The Bolshevik Revolution, By Edward Carr
In his work The Bolshevik Revolution, Edward Carr expands through a detailed historical account
how exactly it was that the Russian councils took power in October 1917. Sociological frameworks
will also allow for a deeper understanding of the social unrest that led to the culmination of the
October Revolutionof 1917 and the unintended consequence of the bureaucratization of the state. To
fully comprehend the events that led the council to take power, it is necessary to acknowledge both
the institutional breakdown that is derived from an institutional lens while at the same time
challenging its limits through a Neo Marxist dialogue. Therefore, the focus of the institutional
structures that are discussed by Theda Skocpol will best... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From February to July, there were protests and constant debate, in hopes of change. However, Lenin
s theses are rejected and the councils continue to support the provisional government because they
re following the orthodox Marxist stages model.
The councils, who were mostly orthodox Marxists, first resisted Lenin s theses because it was
difficult to take this anti Marxist articulation seriously. In other words, they only saw it tangible for
Russia to go through a preliminary stage in order to reach a fully capitalist society, then only
through Marxian revolution get to socialism. Lenin did, however, articulate in his Theses the need
to bring rise to both capitalism and socialism simultaneously. Even though the council s shut down
his view, after the Kornilov affair and the breakdown of the institution, the councils begin to lean
on Lenin. Which results in the successful takeover of the councils. It too can be argued that as a
great leader Lenin won the people and a shift of sympathy towards the Bolsheviks, who promised
everything. The conditions which Lenin had foreseen in his April theses as justifying the transition
to the second stage of the revolution were maturing fast (Carr, 1985: 93).
After the Tsar Voluntarily abdicated in February 1917, due to vast discontent across all the social
classes, it brought up the emergence of dual power . This

Poetry Analysis
Tupac Amuru Shakur or better known by his stage name 2Pac was an American rapper and actor
who came to fame in the 80 s 90 s era. Both Tupac s mother and father were active members of
the Black Panthers . Shakur s parents were very outspoken and tenacious individuals, although
they divorced during Tupac s younger years both of their qualities can be seen through Tupac s
words and actions. From an early age Shakur was surrounded by struggle and relatives who were
imprisoned, this plays a big role in his works or literature. Tupac can be seen as one of the
pioneers of controversial rap . Most of his works shed light on current events in the African

The Lincoln Lawyer By Michael Connelly
1.Full Title, author s name, copyright date, and number of pages. 2.The Lincoln Lawyer is a
404 page crime fiction novel written by Michael Connelly, 2005. Criminal defense attorney
Mickey Haller is presented with his latest client, Beverly Hills playboy, Louis Roulet. Roulet is
accused of rape and murder but this does not trouble Haller; on the contrary, he revels in it
because it means he is being offered a franchise case, or a case offering a huge payout. Naturally,
Haller takes the offer but what is unique about this case is that for the first time ever, Haller thinks
he may have an innocent client. This is very worrying as Haller s father once said There is no

When Haller meets Roulet for the first time in jail, the author lightly introduces the issue of
jailhouse snitches. Although it is only a brief moment that Haller urges Roulet to stay quiet, it
is an important moment that highlights an extremely common problem in today s jail system,
which is that of eavesdroppers and the way they can further endanger their fellow criminals.
Furthermore, Connelly excels at comparing the legal system to Haller s own philosophies.
Much of the book revolves around the concept that the law is a machine, and that there are many
gray areas. Haller uses all of the technicalities of the law in order to provide for the best defense
of the client, and it is these technicalities or gray areas that is what makes the whole novel so
believable. An example of this is when his investigator, Raul Levin, gives Haller a video of
Roulet meeting the victim at the bar. Haller knows that he will have to turn it over to the
prosecution in accordance with the rule of discovery, but at the same time, he uses it to his
advantage because he didn t technically have to turn over anything until I was sure I planned to
use it in trial (105). In today s legal system, there are countless instances of cases winning on
technicalities or on very unspecific laws, so much that is clear to see how Haller s methods are
constantly replicated in the real world. 5.Haller is initially a very unlikeable character

Comparing Greek And Native American Creation Stories
Firstly, I would like to start off with the beginning where Greek creation stories with other
creation stories all started with chaos (nothing). Gaia and Uranus which were created as Mother
Earth and the Sky. Then Erebus was created in the void. In the Chinese creation story, the
passage says all was chaos, and this chaos was shaped like a hen s egg. Inside the egg were Yin and
Yang , which were the two opposing forces of which the universewas made. However the
difference is that Gaia and Uranus went on to give birth to Rhea and Cronus then they went onto
giving birth to gods such as Zeus, Poseidon and so on... There is a little more difference from the
Greek creation stories and the Native American creation stories, in the native American creation
stories, the old man Kumish was created and he would do all the creation himself rather than in
the Greek creation stories; other gods creating separate things. In Serbian creation stories in the
beginning there was nothing but God. He slept and dreamed for ages and he woke up at last at
one point. As he woke up, every glance formed a star and as he travelled the universe was created.
In the Chinese creation story, the world was created when the chaos (which was the shape of a hen
s egg) was rented apart. The elements were created, the heavier ones sank to form earth and the
lighter ones rose and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Difference Between Foundationalism And Coherentism
1. What is the traditional understanding of knowledge? Explain two theories of truth. What is
the difference between foundationalism and coherentism? What is knowledge? What does
knowledge mean and how does a person get to know something? And taking the step further
than that how does a person know that the something is true? What is the basis for knowledge?
There are two main forms of knowledge; a priori and empirical. A priori is knowledge that is
independent from a person s experience and can be proven to be true by simple logic or basic
definition of what is being stated. For example 2+2=4 is considered a priori type of knowledge
because it can be proven true by using the mechanics of mathematics. The other type of
knowledge is knowledge that can not be true without a personal experience to give justification
to why it is true, this knowledge is called empirical knowledge. Empirical knowledge is much
harder to prove to be true just by the nature of where the justification comes from. An example of
this is that the writing is in blue ink the statement can only be true if I had seen for myself that
the writing was done in blue ink because by definition writing does not have to be in blue ink. To
solve this problem, Plato would say that knowledge is a justified true belief and gives us specific
steps to work through this problem. This means the person making the claim must be able to justify
it in someway. The claim in itself must be true. And the person must believe

Bosnian Genocide Essay
In 1992 when Bosnia declared its independence from the Yugoslav, Orthodox Christian Serbians
were losing power to the Muslim Bosniaks. The Bosnian Serb forces did not want to be
outnumbered by Bosniaks at all. Especially when it came to things like politics. The Serbs that
lived in Bosnia Herzegovina felt threatened by the numerous amount of Muslim power, so they
decided to exterminate them. This resulted in a genocide. A genocide is the deliberate killing of a
large group of people. This genocide is known as the Bosnia and HerzegovinaGenocide.
The Bosnian and Herzegovinian Genocide took place in Bosnia and Herzegovina, (Bosnia), and
Serbia. Before Bosnia became independent, they started to elect their first president. At the time

They organized their genocide by state, (Bosnia and Herzegovina). Their goal was to exterminate
all Bosniaks, (Muslim people who lived in Bosnia), and Croats, (Croatians who lived in Bosnia).
That made the Bosniaks and Croats the victim. They were being targeted because ever since
Bosnia broke away from Yugoslavia, Serbians had less power.
Bosnia breaking away from Yugoslavia is the catalyst for this genocide. When they broke away, the
Serbs living in Bosnia didn t have the population power, political power, or religious power. They
figured that if they just took out all of the Bosniaks, (who had the majority power at the time), then
they would be better off. So, that s what they did. They began their extermination process in early
May of 1992 by attacking a Bosniak dominated town.
Unfortunately, this was only the beginning of it. The Serbians quickly started to gain speed in
their extermination process. The whole process of wiping out all Bosniaks and Croats was
expected to take about five years. But, in 1994 NATO forces initiated air strikes against the
Bosnian Serbs to stop the murders/ attacks. In December of 1955 the conflict was ended and there
was a force created to maintain ceasefire. Over the course of those three years Bosniaks and Croats

Cu Honor Code Analysis
Hold Safety Paramount: Engineers must prioritize the safety, health and welfare of the public and
should try to practice sustainability as often as possible. In order to do this, engineers must realize
that major engineering decisions do impact the general public s well being and they must review
their decisions to ensure that they are safe. Engineers with reasons to believe that a fellow engineer
is not following the rules stated in Canon 1 must report this person to the authorities in charge.
Service With Competence: Engineers should only work in areas where they are qualified, but
they are allowed to accept assignments outside of their areas of expertise as long as they are only

Canon 3 states that engineers must always issue true statements, and code 3B states that
engineers must be truthful in all reports, statements and testimonies. This is similar to the CU
Honor Code, because the CU Honor Code was established in order to create a community of
trust. In order to follow the CU Honor Code, one cannot cheat or plagiarise. This means that
students must be honest and truthful when taking tests and doing homework. All of the work
done by a student must be their own. The CU Honor Code also relates with ASCE code 5D and
5E. Canon 5 states that an engineer s merit speaks for their professional reputation. Code 5D
states that engineers shall not misrepresent their academic or professional qualifications. If a
student cheats or plagiarizes, they are misrepresenting their academic qualifications by turning in
work that doesn t accurately display their academic capability. Code 5E states that engineers must
give credit to fellow engineers where credit is due. Plagiarizing or copying someone else s work,
robs that person from the credit they deserve, and gives the credit to a student who doesn t deserve
it. Finally, the CU Honor Code relates to ASCE code 6A. Canon 6 states that engineers shall uphold
the honor, integrity, and dignity of the engineering profession. The point of the CU Honor Code is
for the students of CU Boulder to uphold the honor of the school. Code 6A states that engineers
shall not knowingly engage in anything dishonest or unethical. Cheating or plagiarism in any form
is unethical and dishonest because if a student turns in work with their name on it, even though the
work done isn t their own, then this student is not telling the

The Drinking Age Should Be Lowered Essay
There are numerous problems involving alcohol in the world today, including alcoholism, drunk
driving, and alcohol poisoning leading to death. Many of these problems involve minors and
are linked to drinking underage. The legal drinking age in many states is twenty one years old.
The purpose of this law is to keep minors out of danger: away from drunk driving, alcohol
poisoning, and injuring the brain before it is fully developed. The government supports the belief
that people are not ready or responsible enough for alcohol until this age. However, various
professors and researchers are discovering ways to disprove this belief. These people think that
reducing the drinking age to eighteen would influence our country in a positive... Show more

McCardell suggests it is time to rethink the drinking age in the United States (McCardell, 2012).
First of all, why are eighteen year olds considered minors only when it comes to drinking? After all,
they are legally permitted to drive, get married, smoke cigarettes, and even to join the army. If they
can make the choice to do these things, are they not capable of making the choice to drink? The
drinking age in America has changed multiple times throughout our history. In fact, there were no
such things as mandates on drinking until 1851, when Maine passed the law on prohibition. Soon
after, many other states followed in their footsteps. Congress first pressed the issue on the whole
country in 1917, and the law was ratified two years later. In 1920, the government created the 18th
Amendment, which officially banned everyone from the production, distribution, and consumption
of alcohol. Throughout this entire time period, the demand for alcohol continued to thrive, leading
to flourishing acts of bootlegging (Rotunda, 2004). It took years for the government to give up on
this law, but it did finally happen. In the 1970 s, the government created a legal drinking age:
eighteen years. This law worked pretty well for the country still consisted of flaws, but nothing
more than what we have today. Not until the National Minimum Drinking Age Actof 1984 did this
change. With the passage of this act, individual states had the option of keeping the age

Analysis Essay On C.S. Lewis s Narnia
C.S. Lewis uses a secondary world, Narnia, to convey complex, thought provoking messages to
readers of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. This paper examines the way a selection of
Narnia s key characteristics prompt debates over logic and faith, comment on the nature of
spiritual and metaphysical journeys, allow readers to broaden their conception of their own
capabilities, encourage new reflection on the story of Christ and help to clarify conceptions of
good and evil. Narnia s first characteristic of note is the portal through which it is reached В– the
wardrobe. By connecting the secondary world with the first, В‘real one, rather than simply

Lewis may be suggesting that explorations of metaphysical and spiritual subjects (the В‘Narnias
of our own world) are best suited to open, impartial minds. Second, the obscurity of Narnia s
entrance suggests that such journeys cannot be sought out or forced, but rather will present
themselves at places and times we least expect. Finally, the use of an ordinary wardrobe as the
portal to Narnia makes Lewis s readers consider what fantastic journeys В– physical or otherwise
В– may lay within the ordinariness of everyday existence. Another of Narnia s key characteristics is
that its inhabitants revere and depend upon the children. At their temporary home in England, the
children are unsupervised and irrelevant. The Professor involves himself little with the children s
affairs В– as Peter notes, That old chap will let us do anything we like! (p.2) В– and Mrs.
Macready displays impatient disregard for them. The children s situation breeds problems. Lucy is
afraid of the Professor and her new surroundings, Edmund mocks the Professor s odd appearance
and generally misbehaves, and Peter believes he and his siblings can be as mischievous as they
please. The children bicker constantly. Without responsibilities and respect to accompany it, the
freedom afforded by the Professor s indifference does not translate into maturity. In Narnia, by
contrast, the children immediately command

Revised Order Of The Sacraments Of Initiation
Revised Order of the Sacraments of Initiation Bishop ГЃlvaro Corrada said, The sacraments draw
humanity into the truth and love of God revealed in Christ, thereby disposing the faithful to live
this love more deeply in their daily lives of Christian freedom and witness. They serve to introduce
us into the Catholic Church, increase our understanding of our religion, bestow upon us essential
Christian virtues, and strengthen our faith. There are seven sacraments in total: Baptism,
Confirmation, Eucharist, Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Marriage.
The first three Sacraments listed are the Sacraments of Initiation. The Sacraments of Christian
Initiation Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist lay the foundations of every Christian life...By
means of these Sacraments of Christian Initiation, [we] thus receive in increasing measure the
treasures of the divine life and advance toward the perfection of charity. (CCC Chapter 1, Article

and the reception of Jesus body. In the words of the Catholic Church, The Christian is born anew
by Baptism, strengthened by Confirmation, and receives in the Eucharist the food of eternal life.

Pros And Cons Of The Legal Drinking Age
Even though Americans can legally qualify for the military, army, marines, navy, and etc. at the
age of 18 and over, women and men under the age of 21 cannot legally drink alcoholic beverages.
Not only can Americans qualify to fight for the United States, but they are also suppose to be able
to drive, attend college, take on careers and bills, do anything without parental supervision, vote
state and federal, sign legal documents, charge as an adult, and live the life of an adult. The list of
rights that an 18 year old can do, continues to grow throughout the years. If an 18 year old is
enlisted into the United Statesmilitary and stationed in the U.S., they should be able to consume
alcoholic beverages. On a day in 1942, the legal drafting age lowered to the age 18 and the highest
age raised to the age 37 (history.com np). By 1988, all 50 states in the United States, had raised
their legal drinking agebecause the National Government prompted them to, so all states had the
same minimum legal drinking age (drinkingage.procon.com np). At this point in time, the National
Government announced it completely clear that even if you are 18, you can be drafted into the
military and etc., can draft you, but you cannot consume or purchase alcoholic beverages. Only a
couple of statistics have changed from 1942 to present day. On January 27th, 1973, the United
States military ended drafting and the legal military age to apply for the military was 18 years old

Truth and Goodness in Immanuel Kant and St. Thomas...
Immanuel Kant and St. Thomas Aquinas account for the existence of truth in sharply contrasting
ways. Kant locates all truth inside the mind, as a pure product of reason, operating by means of
rational categories. Although Kant acknowledges that all knowledge originates in the intuition of
the senses, the intelligibility of sense experience he attributes to innateforms of apperception and to
categoriesinherent to the mind. The innate categories shape the phenomena of sensible being, and
Kantclaims nothing can be known or proved about the noumena, the presumed world external to the
mind.1 Aquinas agrees that all knowledge comes through the senses, but disagrees with Kant in
arguing that categorical qualities do not originate... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The two views of truth have divergent consequences for ethics. Aquinas philosophy produces a
tradition of moral clarity that endures to the present, while the philosophy of Kant leads ultimately
to the cultural relativism and moral skepticism that are widespread in the modern world.
For Immanuel Kant, truth is accessible to the mind only because it derives from rational categories
already in the mind. Although knowledge begins in the senses, Kant claims, besides what is given
to the sensuous intuition, special concepts must yet be superadded concepts which have their origin
wholly a priori in the pure understanding, and under which every perception must be first of all
subsumed and then by their means changed into experience. 6 The sources of such synthetic a
priori concepts are categories inherent in reason, and Kant supplies a table of such categories,
including in it: Unity (measure), Plurality (magnitude), Totality (whole), Reality, Negation,
Limitation, Substance, Cause, Community, Possibility, Existence, and Necessity.7 Thus, the
understanding of any perceived thing as a whole entity, or as having an independent material
existence, or as being caused by anything, or as itself the cause of anything has its origin in rational
categories in the mind and is not traceable to any essential quality or state of being that can be
attributed to the thing in itself, according to Kant.

Monetary Policies And Monetary Policy
Monetary Policies (Introduction)
The objective of monetary policy is to reserve the worth of the money by keeping inflation low,
stable and predictable that lets Canadians be more confident about the spending and investment
choices. It reassures long term investment in Canada s economy as well as contributes to
continuous job creation and better the production. It helps improve living standard. Canada s
monetary policy outline consists of two key components working together and reinforcing each
other: the inflation control target and the flexible exchange rate. The inflation control target directs
the decisions of the Bank regarding the proper setting of the policy interest rate that maintains a
stable price environment throughout the medium term.
Influencing Short Term Interest Rates As to reach the inflation target, the banks have to make
changes in the policy rate by raising or lowering it. If inflation is beyond target, the banks will
have to increase the policy rate, this inspires institutions to increase interest rates on the loan and
mortgages. Discouraging borrowing and spending which enables upward pressure on price. If
inflation is under the goal, banks will lower the policy rate which would then encourage financial
institutions to lower interest rates on the loans and mortgages. This information shows how much
banks are concerned about inflation going higher or lower in terms of the goal. The key policy
interest rates are when banks expect to be used in

The Economic And Social Cost Of Illiteracy
The World Literacy Foundation released a report on illiteracy in 2012 sharing this devastating
news, Shockingly, more than 796 million people in the world cannot read or write. About 67
million children do not have access to a primary school education and another 72 million miss out
on secondary school education (Melbourne, The Economic Social Cost of Illiteracy ). Complete
illiteracy is defined as, a person who cannot read or write at all (Melbourne, The Economic Social
Cost of Illiteracy ). However, there is another kind of illiteracy. This illiteracy is commonly known
as functional illiteracy. Function illiteracy, means an individual may have basic reading, writing
and numerical skills but cannot apply them to accomplish tasks that are necessary to make
informed choices and participate fully in everyday life (Melbourne, The Economic Social Cost
of Illiteracy ). Illiteracy brings multiple negative effects to an individual and his or her family.
The effects of illiteracy include: life threatening health issues, lower incomes and inability to
succeed in his or her career, and it increases crime rates. First, illiteracy carries life threatening
health issues. If someone is illiterate, he or she will be unable to comprehend medical records and

Explain The Terms Metaphor And Metonymy

ESSAY
The terms metaphor and metonymy made a regular appearance in our survey of modern literary
theory. Discuss the significance that these terms assumed in the various schools of thought, and
comment on both continuities and changes within the various contexts. Do you still find the terms
useful for literary studies today?
Roman Jakobson s article Two Aspects of Language and Two Types of Aphasic Disturbances
changed dramatically the way literary critics use the terms metaphor and metonymy. Before that
article metonymy was a rhetorical trope barely distinguishable from synecdoche. Since Jakobson
introduced the dichotomy, metonymy was elevated to the status equal to metaphor, and viewed as
its contrary. Both metaphor and metonymy ceased to perform only as rhetorical tropes and became
the two principles defining relationships within language. This binary model has been developed,
applied or challenged in many studies from linguistics and rhetoric, to literary theory, film,
psychology. In this essay we will look at how the terms metaphor and metonymy were employed by
different schools ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Paul De Man in his article Semiology and Rhetoric explores the possibilities of metaphor and
metonymy relate to each other in a free play, not confined to their definitions. He takes a passage
from Proust s book and deconstructs the poles of the binary, proving that metaphor could be a
more powerful device than metonymy (which is the traditional view), but it is only possible with
the help of metonymic tools. The effect of this is that we no longer can have authoritative reading
as we are constantly aware that our practices of reading are not sufficient, we read with the help of
instruments the text provided

Theme Of Love In The Ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote
In Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra s classic novel, The Ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote is a
wonderful tale about a man who abandons his normal life to pursue life as a knight. The characters
in the novel such as Dulcinea, his love, Marcela, Maritornes and Sancho Panza his squire happens
to play a great and important role in the novel when exampling the theme of love. The themes of
love, care, infatuation and loyalty are greatly expressed throughout the novel. Throughout the novel,
Cervantes is able to examine how one can differentiate true love from false and infatuated love.
The protagonist, Don Quixote s obsessive reading of books of chivalry plays a major role in
defining his character; his inspiration for his travels as a knight errant comes from the literature
about chivalry that he reads, the literature that causes him to lose his mind and go mad. Everything
that he usually experiences in his journey, first happened in the books that inspired his travels. The
character, Dulcinea s role as Quixote s lady love becomes equivalent with the position a king might
hold in a true and honorable knight s life.
Many heroes like Don Quixote have experienced many episodes dealing with the feeling of love.
His unconditional love toward Aldonzo Lorenzo is seen to be a motivation for his survival.
Aldonzo Lorenzo is a good looking peasant girl in a nearby village. Quixote shows his first sign of
love when he gives Aldonzo Lorenzo a nickname called Dulcinea del Toboso in which he got it

South African Imperialism In Nigeria
Both South Africa and Nigeria were both colonized in the 19th century . Although both places were
separate, and their colonizations occurred at different speeds and at slightly different times the
colonizations of South Africa and Nigeria share many similarities, such as what country colonized
them, and how willing the African places were to accept the new leadership . In South Africa, the
British started by trying to take over the Zulu in the year 1816. Because they were more powerful,
and had more advanced weapons, the British were very successful in their conquests. Dutch
farmers, called Boers, began to slowly settle in South Africa. They were attracted to South Africa
because there was a lot of land on which they could establish farms. The Boers... Show more

In the late 1800s, many valuable resources were discovered in southern Africa. This lead to lots of

happy with the sudden influx of people trying to gain control of their land. They put up a fight
against the invaders of their precious land. In more southern lands, the Zulus began to fight back
against the British who were controlling them. The Zulu king, King Cetshwayo, refused to accept
the British rule. The Zulu fought hard against their oppressors, and almost succeed in their goal to

Analyzing Fouquet s Character
Our character is Fouquet, a character with a casual, yet important personality. In the very
beginning of the book, Fouquet is not mentioned at all. It s not until Chapter 10 that he is even
mentioned, and becomes a character of importance in Chapter 11. From there on, he seems to
hold a role in every chapter. The book provides minimal descriptions of Fouquet s physical
appearance, so we are only left to infer most of the details. The first small detail that is given
through the book, is in Chapter 10 on page 88. Though not directly stated, we came to the
conclusion that Fouquet is an older man. This is also backed up by the fact that Fouquet is
extremely wealthy (meaning he had more time to gain his wealth). As for Fouquet s personality,
details are almost always directly given. The most important detail of his personality that plays a
big role throughout the book is the fact that he is loyal to the king. This aspect first shows up in
Chapter 11, on page 93. In a conversation with Aramis, Fouquet reveals that he views the king as
sacred than ever and dear . Earlier in the conversation, Fouquet also states... Show more content on

anyway. He remains humble when the topic of wealth is brought up, remains loyal when speaking

Analysis of The History of The Peloponnesian War, By...
In Thucydides , The History of The Peloponnesian War, there are many themes that are illustrated
throughout various passages. One major theme can be found in book 2, chapter 53, where
Thucydides describes the situation in Athens after it had been stricken with plague during the
Peloponnesian War. Thucydides uses his account of the plagueto suggest that war is a violent
teacher. Among other passages in his work he also suggests that in war, no matter how wealthy and
prepared the participants may be there is always the chance for the unforeseen, such as, the teaching
and breeding of violence. In chapter 53 of book 2, Thucydides describes the surrounding
circumstances of a plague that had struck Athens during the Peloponnesian War. The

He points out that the Athenians are at the highest level of preparation in every department,
especially in wealth, which he says is most important in war (1.83.2). Thucydides also suggest
that although wealth and preparation are vital to winning wars, there is still a chance for the
unforeseen which is brought about as a result of war. This is exemplified in a line from the
speech given from the Athenian delegates to the Spartans, in which they say that as long as war
continues it becomes an affair of chance from which neither side is exempt (1.78.2). In chapter 18
of book 4, Thucydides writes of another speech that was given by Spartan envoys to the Athenians
after the events of the Battle of Pylos, where many Spartan hoplites were taken hostage. The
Spartans offer a truce to the Athenians with the idea that they were already desirous of making
peace and were only held back by their allies from doing so (4.21.1). The Athenians did not accept.
Thucydides says that because they had the hostages they felt as if they were in a superior position,
and so, they demanded that the Spartans restore many settlements that the Athenians were forced to
give up (4.21.2 3). These passages suggest that the Spartans had the foresight to see that because
this war was so devastating to both sides, the Athenians desired peace as much as they did. The
Spartans, however, were met with the unforeseen when the Athenians refused the truce without the
acceptance of their terms. As a

Everyone, Americans and Europeans alike, have heard of, if not grown off of, a generation and

and how did they make it big? What s the story of their struggle?
Before researching, I already knew a lot about the Beatles. I knew that the band was made up of

Paul used to love to listen to the radio and was very influenced by his dad who played in a little

Parenago 1802
Parenago 1802, a member of the в€

eclipsing binary in a 4.674 d orbit, with equal mass components (M2/M1=0.985В±0.029). Here we
present extensive V IC JHKS light curves spanning в€

spectrum. The light curves evince a third light source that is variable with a period of 0.73 d, and is
also manifested in the high resolution spectrum, strongly indicating the presence of a third starin the
system, probably a rapidly rotating classical T Tauri star. We incorporate this third light into our
radial velocity and light curve modeling of the eclipsing pair, measuring accurate masses
(M1=0.391В±0.032, M2=0.385В±0.032 MвЉ™), radii (R1=1.73В±0.02, R2=1.62В±0.02 RвЉ™),

by 6.9В±0.8%, the temperatures differ by 9.2В±0.2%, and consequently the luminosities differ by

Familial ties, tradition and upbringing shape an individuals identity and sense of security. This
idea is expressed in The Follower by Seamus Heaney as well as in two short stories from Alistair

establishing and maintaining connections of paternal nature. They divulge in the idea that
incompatibility with one s home can affect the viewing of their place in the world, and indicate
that qualities such as physical and intellectual skill can factor into a sense of belonging and place.

Effect Of Bracing Or Surgical Treatments On Balance Control
Effect of Bracing or Surgical Treatments on Balance Control in Idiopathic Scoliosis: Three
Case Studies In adolescents, scoliosis is the most frequent spinal deformity. About 80 percent of
scoliosis cases are idiopathic, meaning there is no known cause, although some believe that
impairment in the sensory processing could be the cause. The purpose of this particular study is
to see if orthopedic treatments can help people who have scoliosis have more balance control. It
can be infantile (birth to three years), juvenile (two to ten years old), and degenerative
(adulthood) scoliosis. The kind of scoliosis is determined based on the age of when someone is
diagnosed. Scoliosis is detected when biomarkers are used to predict deformation of the spine or
a progression risk. Scoliosis can be caused by one of six ways. It can be genetic, neurological,
hormonal and metabolic, skeletal growth, biomechanical, and environmental. Three studies
were done with one person per case. Case one was to see the effect of spine surgery and the
control of the person s balance. Case two was to see the effect of bracing on balance control.
Case three was to see the effect of spine surgery in adult s balance control. In the first case, a 17
year old male had a surgery that consisted of reducing the curves and vertebrae rotations using
transpedicular screws. Eighteen months after surgery, the curve of his spine had an 18 degree right

Parents And Children Should Not Have Vaccinations
Some critics believe parents and children should not have vaccinations. There s still a debate
going on because the medical community does not agree. Healthcare professionals believes
everyone should be vaccinated and it is very important. They believe vaccinations protect you
when traveling, prevent childhood illnesses, it s painless, and you take it once and you are
protected for life (Pros and Cons, 2015). These diseases from other countries can be brought back
into the United States and cause an outbreak of diseases. Other people believe vaccinations are
90% 95% effective, but there is still 5% that can still come in contact with the disease (Pros and
Cons, 2015). They think it doesn t capture the illness and immunity lasts longer if created by natural
circumstances (Pros and Cons, 2015). Some schools require certain vaccinations to be taken before
starting to school. Fourteen studies have been conducted by Amanda Peet, a vaccinemanufacturer,
and she believes there is no association between autism and vaccines. No real studies have ever
been done but medical professions believe this is fake (Peet, n.d). Whether or not a parent cannot

on the court. It is important to mention some of the characters such as Jimmy, the shooter, and
the teacher (Myra Fleeter). Jimmy is one of the best players in the team but he rejects to play
with new coach. Therefore, coach needs to find a way to bring him back to the team. He uses
reverse psychology in the situation when he explains Jimmy that team is all of them, not just
him . Here coach shows expert power because he uses prior knowledge probably from previous
situations in his life. When we talk about the shooter and his relationship with the coach, we can
say that coach chooses the shooter for his assistant for several reasons. Firs of all, the shooter
knows a lot about basketball so he shows the expert power. Also, Coach Dale gives him another
chance because people deserve another chance . Also, some other people have previously put
their trust in him by giving him, Coach Dale, a second chance. In the case of Myra Fleener, it
can be said that she displays a very autocratic leadership style. She attempts to lead Coach
Norman Dale with a firm hand with very little input. She pretends to ignore and put off what the
coach has to say, but towards the end of the film she takes Norman s side and adjusts her
leadership style to a more democratic view. She agrees with the coach that

Transformational Leadership Essay
A Call for Transformational Leaders in Today s Corporate Structures Leadership styles have
evolved with mankind since the beginning. Tribal leaders in the past were responsible for almost
every facet of their clan s well being, including basic life necessities. As times evolved leaders
took on more of a political role and the ruled kingdoms and became responsible for their
civilizations continued existence. These leaders demanded loyalty from their subjects as their
empire s very existence relied on it. In today s corporate landscapes, leadershipdemands innovation
as this is the life source which propels a company forward and guarantees its existence in the future.

68) This organization often times is represented by one s own manager or leader. It is therefore
incumbent on them to embody these characteristics of a highly emotionally intelligent individual.
Two main categories of leader exist in the workforce: transformational and transactional. Both have
the ability to develop high levels of emotional intelligence and perhaps an emotionally intelligent
super star will default to one leadership style over the other depending on the situation. Each style
has its own characteristics but this however doesn t mean that one is right or wrong or that they are
completely unrelated. In actuality This means a leader can be both transactional and
transformational and that hat transformational leadership builds on transactional leadership
(Bryman, 1993, p. 459) Does this then imply that a transformational leader outperforms and is
more desired by a corporation and subordinates than a transactional leader? According to a study by
Hartog, Muijan, and Koopman (1997) Transformational leaders when compared to transactional
leaders were shown to have subordinates who report greater satisfaction (p. 23) This in turn leads to
higher functioning groups who consistently show increase performance and effectiveness scores.
This implies that transformational leaders are more pleasant to work with but lacks the backing to
definitively state that they always produce

The West Memphis Three Case Analysis
The Case of the West Memphis Three involves the three teenage boys accused and convicted of
murdering Michael Moore, Stevie Branch, and Christopher Byers in West Memphis, Arkansas on
May 5th, 1993. The investigation, trial, and appeals that followed would put the Arkansas criminal
justice system under scrutiny for their actions. The West Memphis Police Department arrested and
charged Jason Baldwin, Damien Echols, and Jessie Misskelly, Jr. with the three boy s murders.
The entire case was under the constant watch of the media and brought a great deal of attention
to the actions and conduct of the West Memphis Police Department, as well as the Arkansas
criminal justice system. Many outsiders got involved with the West Memphis Three case. Among
these outsiders were famous musicians Eddy Vedder, lead singer of Pearl Jam and Natalie
Maines of the Dixie Chicks, famous actors including Johnny Depp, and superstar director Peter
Jackson. These celebrities helped to raise awareness of the case as well as to help raise money for
the West Memphis three to obtain appropriate post conviction representation and unbiased forensic
testing and analysis in the hopes of exonerating them of their convictions. While the new forensic
evidence (and the new testing and expert analysis of the original evidence) ultimately helped the
West Memphis Three become free men again, the question still remains as to who really murdered
those three boys on May 5th, 1993 in West Memphis, Arkansas. Because the

Greet Hofstede`S Dimensions Essay
Greet Hofstede`s cultural dimensions
Hello everybody. My name is Elchin. Today I will talk about Greet Hofstede`s cultural dimensions.
Every manager should have deep knowledge about culture because we live in globalization time.
What is culture? Culture is a system of values, beliefs, and norms shared among a group of people.
People`s culture affect the values in the workplace. That s why management processes should be
different according to cultures and according to the people from different cultures in the workplace.
The most famous study about how culture relates to values in the workplace was conducted by
Geert Hofstede. From 1967 to 1973 he did a long research among more than 1 million employees in
IBM company. He identified 5 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Individualism and collectivism. In individualistic cultures people focus on their individual goals.
Everyone looks after himself or herself. Every individual think about his or her own success and
happiness. Every individual makes his or her choice. But it is the opposite in collectivist cultures.
Individuals view themselves as the members of groups and think about their group, community
and family needs and goals. For example we have a group assignment in our university. If
someone does not work on assignment, student from individualistic culture would tell it to
professor that he or she doesn t do anything, doesn t work on assignment. Because for him or for
her individual goals and rights are more important. But in collectivist culture if one of the students
doesn t work on assignment, the group would support him or her. They would not tell it to
professor because for the group members group goals are more important. Another example. In
individualistic countries a person chooses his future wife. No one can tell anything to him because
of his choice. But in collectivist countries parents choose or advice wifes for their children and that
individuals agree with it because they believe it is the best way

Disney Springs At Jock Lindsey
Yesterday evening we went over to Disney Springs for dinner at Jock Lindsey s, but first we
wanted to swing by the new Ganachery Chocolate Shoppe that had just opened a couple days
before. We love good chocolate, so we had high hopes for this newest addition to the list of high
end foodie shops at Walt Disney World. The Ganachery did not disappoint! For most people, unless
you know of some little artisan confectionery, the best chocolates you can get your hands on are
Godiva. There is an excitement and ritual to opening that gleaming golden box and breathing in that
smell. Amplify the smell, the taste, the creaminess by 10 fold; THEN you have the Ganachery
chocolates!
You can find the shop kitty corner from Jock Lindsey s, just past the turn off for Raglan Road.
When we arrived there was only another couple in line ahead of us and we were allowed inside
after only a minute or two. They were limiting the number of people who could shop at one time
because the footprint of the floor is incredibly tiny. If I recall they only wanted 7 or 8 customers
to be inside at one time. I didn t feel that the short wait was too much to ask, even though some
people stomped off after only being in line 30 seconds or so. They were offering free sea salt
caramel samples while we waited so who was I to complain!?
When I first walked in the first thing that I noticed was the lighting... it s terrible for taking photos,
lol, so let me apologize right now for the terrible quality of some of

An incentive spirometer is a tool that measures how well you are filling your lungs with each
breath. This tool can help keep your lungs clear and active. Taking long, deep breaths may help
reverse or decrease the chance of developing breathing (pulmonary) problems, especially infection,

Surgery of the chest or abdomen.
Surgery if you have a history of smoking or a lung problem.
A long period of time when you are unable to move or be active.
If the spirometer includes an indicator to show your best effort, your health care provider or

The Tribe Of The Navajo Nation
The Group of people that will be described in my paper is the Navajos of the Navajo Nation,
located in the northeastern part of Arizona, and their religious beliefs. Another topic that will be
discussed is the ceremonies that are held among the Navajo tribe. The reason this topic interest
me is due to my wife and hearing stories about ways she was taught as a child. Also how much of
an impact it has had in her life due to family members taking part in these ceremonies. According
to the history of the Navajo Tribe, the Holy People lived in the underworld and helped by guiding
the First Man and First Woman to earth (McCoy 1988). The Holy People are said to be attracted to
songs, dances, and chants during the ceremony along with the creation of Sandpainting. The
Sandpainting is used in the healing process of the ceremony to draw a picture that tells a story of
the Holy People. The Navajo culture have amazed so many people to how beautifully constructed
the rituals are performed. Although, the ritual has been passed on from generation to generation,
how the Navajo rituals are ways of communication has been questioned by so many. Many believe
that it way for the patient to come into ...harmony... with the universe (Klukhohn and Leighton
1974). The hypothesis for the question was presented based on exploration of the culture done by
researchers; concluding that, the Navajo rituals are a way of communication to their ancestors/the
Holy People, who are worshiped in return of good

The Popularity of Preschool and Headstart Programs
The parents of today s society are signing up their children for preschool and head start programs
more than ever. About seventy five percent of the nation s four year old attend a preschool
center, as do fifty percent of three year olds. (Barnett, 2008, page 3). Preschool has long been
though to shape a child s academic life, putting a child ahead of the curve in kindergarten and
leading them into a successful school career. The primary reason for attending preschool in past
decades was the known benefits of socialization, but preschool has changed a lot over the years
putting much more emphasis on cognitive development. Gone are the days when children only
focused on colors, shapes, and numbers. Today s preschoolers are learning music and second
languages. Questions still remain about how successful these programs are when it comes to
preparing children for their future academic careers. This paper will examine the known
advantages and disadvantages of sending a child off to preschool as well as what qualities a
preschool should have. Quality of Care Research has shown that the true benefits of preschool
programs are heavily dependent upon the setting and environment in which the learning is taking
place. Choosing the correct school is crucial for proper learning and development in preschool aged
children. In order to obtain successful outcomes preschools and other types of head start programs
should be of high quality, meaning they have experienced teacher

Legalizing Prostitution
As shown by the safe conditions the Netherlands has created, prostitution can be a safe and well
controlled profession. If it remains illegal it forces women to work underground in unsafe
conditions and without proper health and safety precautions. The Netherlands is now one of the
best know examples of open, legalized prostitutionbecause of its innovative advancements (
Legalizing Prostitution ). Under the government s new laws, safer environments are in place for
prostitutes to work, and there has been a large creation of policies to promote safe sex. For
example, brothels became legal as early as 2000 though the move is widely controversial (
Prostitution in the Netherlands ). Brothel owners feel as though it is unfair because it forces... Show

Before prostitution was legalized in Nevada, it was greatly profitable in many towns in the
West. All other western states have shut down establishments selling sex, except for Nevada. In
as early as 1937, a law was developed during weekly health checks for all prostitutes. The
mandatory testing began in 1986 requiring weekly STD testing and monthly testing for HIV and
syphilis. Condoms have been mandatory since 1988 for oral sex and intercourse, and laws have
even gone as far as making brothel owners liable for customers who become infected with HIV
after visitation ( Legalizing Prostitution ). Despite the legal status of brothels, there are copious
rules owners must follow to uphold their establishments. Brothels can only exist in counties of
populations less than 400,000. As a result of this law, brothels are illegal in Las Vegas (Giang). In
1979, a state law banned brothels from advertising in counties where it was an illegal act. Brothels
have even gone as far as advertising large parking spaces for truck drivers who wish to stop during
their commutes. Brothels have many restrictions in Nevada, but prostitutes must follow rules as
well. In the majority of Nevada s counties, prostitutes must be of twenty one years or older, with the
exception of Storey and Lyon counties where the age is eighteen. Prostitutes are encouraged to be
workers of brothels, and soliciting outside of brothels is considered a misdemeanor. Alongside legal
prostitution, illegal prostitution numbers are flourishing ( Legalizing Prostitution ). Furthermore,
sex workers are considered independent contractors and do not receive unemployment, retirement,
or health care benefits. In order for the women to receive any benefits from the state, they must
register with the county sheriffs to receive documentation of their work. When a prostitute is

  • 2. The African American Education System The education system has been around for many years. Although it hasn t always had the same structure, the general idea of education was always to learn and gain more knowledge to better one s life and future. While many of the whites were able to easily obtain an education, blacks, indians, and others had it much harder. This actually contributed to the division of the races as well. The whites believed they were mighty and powerful, while the minority races had to hide and fight for their rights. Education was an empowering thing for many people, especially for those without a say. During the Reconstruction in the New South, African Americans were still being attacked and so they strike against them and created their own churches and schools. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Bolshevik Revolution, By Edward Carr In his work The Bolshevik Revolution, Edward Carr expands through a detailed historical account how exactly it was that the Russian councils took power in October 1917. Sociological frameworks will also allow for a deeper understanding of the social unrest that led to the culmination of the October Revolutionof 1917 and the unintended consequence of the bureaucratization of the state. To fully comprehend the events that led the council to take power, it is necessary to acknowledge both the institutional breakdown that is derived from an institutional lens while at the same time challenging its limits through a Neo Marxist dialogue. Therefore, the focus of the institutional structures that are discussed by Theda Skocpol will best... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From February to July, there were protests and constant debate, in hopes of change. However, Lenin s theses are rejected and the councils continue to support the provisional government because they re following the orthodox Marxist stages model. The councils, who were mostly orthodox Marxists, first resisted Lenin s theses because it was difficult to take this anti Marxist articulation seriously. In other words, they only saw it tangible for Russia to go through a preliminary stage in order to reach a fully capitalist society, then only through Marxian revolution get to socialism. Lenin did, however, articulate in his Theses the need to bring rise to both capitalism and socialism simultaneously. Even though the council s shut down his view, after the Kornilov affair and the breakdown of the institution, the councils begin to lean on Lenin. Which results in the successful takeover of the councils. It too can be argued that as a great leader Lenin won the people and a shift of sympathy towards the Bolsheviks, who promised everything. The conditions which Lenin had foreseen in his April theses as justifying the transition to the second stage of the revolution were maturing fast (Carr, 1985: 93). After the Tsar Voluntarily abdicated in February 1917, due to vast discontent across all the social classes, it brought up the emergence of dual power . This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Lincoln Lawyer By Michael Connelly 1.Full Title, author s name, copyright date, and number of pages. 2.The Lincoln Lawyer is a 404 page crime fiction novel written by Michael Connelly, 2005. Criminal defense attorney Mickey Haller is presented with his latest client, Beverly Hills playboy, Louis Roulet. Roulet is accused of rape and murder but this does not trouble Haller; on the contrary, he revels in it because it means he is being offered a franchise case, or a case offering a huge payout. Naturally, Haller takes the offer but what is unique about this case is that for the first time ever, Haller thinks he may have an innocent client. This is very worrying as Haller s father once said There is no client as scary as an innocent man. As the case continues, however,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Haller meets Roulet for the first time in jail, the author lightly introduces the issue of jailhouse snitches. Although it is only a brief moment that Haller urges Roulet to stay quiet, it is an important moment that highlights an extremely common problem in today s jail system, which is that of eavesdroppers and the way they can further endanger their fellow criminals. Furthermore, Connelly excels at comparing the legal system to Haller s own philosophies. Much of the book revolves around the concept that the law is a machine, and that there are many gray areas. Haller uses all of the technicalities of the law in order to provide for the best defense of the client, and it is these technicalities or gray areas that is what makes the whole novel so believable. An example of this is when his investigator, Raul Levin, gives Haller a video of Roulet meeting the victim at the bar. Haller knows that he will have to turn it over to the prosecution in accordance with the rule of discovery, but at the same time, he uses it to his advantage because he didn t technically have to turn over anything until I was sure I planned to use it in trial (105). In today s legal system, there are countless instances of cases winning on technicalities or on very unspecific laws, so much that is clear to see how Haller s methods are constantly replicated in the real world. 5.Haller is initially a very unlikeable character ... • 6. Comparing Greek And Native American Creation Stories Firstly, I would like to start off with the beginning where Greek creation stories with other creation stories all started with chaos (nothing). Gaia and Uranus which were created as Mother Earth and the Sky. Then Erebus was created in the void. In the Chinese creation story, the passage says all was chaos, and this chaos was shaped like a hen s egg. Inside the egg were Yin and Yang , which were the two opposing forces of which the universewas made. However the difference is that Gaia and Uranus went on to give birth to Rhea and Cronus then they went onto giving birth to gods such as Zeus, Poseidon and so on... There is a little more difference from the Greek creation stories and the Native American creation stories, in the native American creation stories, the old man Kumish was created and he would do all the creation himself rather than in the Greek creation stories; other gods creating separate things. In Serbian creation stories in the beginning there was nothing but God. He slept and dreamed for ages and he woke up at last at one point. As he woke up, every glance formed a star and as he travelled the universe was created. In the Chinese creation story, the world was created when the chaos (which was the shape of a hen s egg) was rented apart. • 7. Difference Between Foundationalism And Coherentism 1. What is the traditional understanding of knowledge? Explain two theories of truth. What is the difference between foundationalism and coherentism? What is knowledge? What does knowledge mean and how does a person get to know something? And taking the step further than that how does a person know that the something is true? What is the basis for knowledge? There are two main forms of knowledge; a priori and empirical. A priori is knowledge that is independent from a person s experience and can be proven to be true by simple logic or basic definition of what is being stated. For example 2+2=4 is considered a priori type of knowledge because it can be proven true by using the mechanics of mathematics. The other type of knowledge is knowledge that can not be true without a personal experience to give justification to why it is true, this knowledge is called empirical knowledge. Empirical knowledge is much harder to prove to be true just by the nature of where the justification comes from. An example of this is that the writing is in blue ink the statement can only be true if I had seen for myself that the writing was done in blue ink because by definition writing does not have to be in blue ink. To solve this problem, Plato would say that knowledge is a justified true belief and gives us specific steps to work through this problem. This means the person making the claim must be able to justify it in someway. The claim in itself must be true. And the person must believe ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Bosnian Genocide Essay In 1992 when Bosnia declared its independence from the Yugoslav, Orthodox Christian Serbians were losing power to the Muslim Bosniaks. The Bosnian Serb forces did not want to be outnumbered by Bosniaks at all. Especially when it came to things like politics. The Serbs that lived in Bosnia Herzegovina felt threatened by the numerous amount of Muslim power, so they decided to exterminate them. This resulted in a genocide. A genocide is the deliberate killing of a large group of people. This genocide is known as the Bosnia and HerzegovinaGenocide. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They organized their genocide by state, (Bosnia and Herzegovina). Their goal was to exterminate all Bosniaks, (Muslim people who lived in Bosnia), and Croats, (Croatians who lived in Bosnia). That made the Bosniaks and Croats the victim. They were being targeted because ever since Bosnia broke away from Yugoslavia, Serbians had less power. Bosnia breaking away from Yugoslavia is the catalyst for this genocide. When they broke away, the Serbs living in Bosnia didn t have the population power, political power, or religious power. They figured that if they just took out all of the Bosniaks, (who had the majority power at the time), then they would be better off. So, that s what they did. They began their extermination process in early May of 1992 by attacking a Bosniak dominated town. Unfortunately, this was only the beginning of it. The Serbians quickly started to gain speed in their extermination process. The whole process of wiping out all Bosniaks and Croats was expected to take about five years. But, in 1994 NATO forces initiated air strikes against the Bosnian Serbs to stop the murders/ attacks. In December of 1955 the conflict was ended and there was a force created to maintain ceasefire. In order to do this, engineers must realize that major engineering decisions do impact the general public s well being and they must review their decisions to ensure that they are safe. Engineers with reasons to believe that a fellow engineer is not following the rules stated in Canon 1 must report this person to the authorities in charge. Canon 3 states that engineers must always issue true statements, and code 3B states that engineers must be truthful in all reports, statements and testimonies. This is similar to the CU Honor Code, because the CU Honor Code was established in order to create a community of trust. In order to follow the CU Honor Code, one cannot cheat or plagiarise. This means that students must be honest and truthful when taking tests and doing homework. All of the work done by a student must be their own. The CU Honor Code also relates with ASCE code 5D and 5E. Canon 5 states that an engineer s merit speaks for their professional reputation. Code 5D states that engineers shall not misrepresent their academic or professional qualifications. If a student cheats or plagiarizes, they are misrepresenting their academic qualifications by turning in work that doesn t accurately display their academic capability. Code 5E states that engineers must give credit to fellow engineers where credit is due. Plagiarizing or copying someone else s work, robs that person from the credit they deserve, and gives the credit to a student who doesn t deserve it. Finally, the CU Honor Code relates to ASCE code 6A. Canon 6 states that engineers shall uphold the honor, integrity, and dignity of the engineering profession. The point of the CU Honor Code is for the students of CU Boulder to uphold the honor of the school. Code 6A states that engineers shall not knowingly engage in anything dishonest or unethical. • 10. The Drinking Age Should Be Lowered Essay There are numerous problems involving alcohol in the world today, including alcoholism, drunk driving, and alcohol poisoning leading to death. Many of these problems involve minors and are linked to drinking underage. The legal drinking age in many states is twenty one years old. The purpose of this law is to keep minors out of danger: away from drunk driving, alcohol poisoning, and injuring the brain before it is fully developed. The government supports the belief that people are not ready or responsible enough for alcohol until this age. However, various professors and researchers are discovering ways to disprove this belief. These people think that reducing the drinking age to eighteen would influence our country in a positive... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... McCardell suggests it is time to rethink the drinking age in the United States (McCardell, 2012). First of all, why are eighteen year olds considered minors only when it comes to drinking? After all, they are legally permitted to drive, get married, smoke cigarettes, and even to join the army. If they can make the choice to do these things, are they not capable of making the choice to drink? The drinking age in America has changed multiple times throughout our history. In fact, there were no such things as mandates on drinking until 1851, when Maine passed the law on prohibition. Soon after, many other states followed in their footsteps. Congress first pressed the issue on the whole country in 1917, and the law was ratified two years later. In 1920, the government created the 18th Amendment, which officially banned everyone from the production, distribution, and consumption of alcohol. Throughout this entire time period, the demand for alcohol continued to thrive, leading to flourishing acts of bootlegging (Rotunda, 2004). It took years for the government to give up on this law, but it did finally happen. In the 1970 s, the government created a legal drinking age: eighteen years. This law worked pretty well for the country still consisted of flaws, but nothing more than what we have today. Not until the National Minimum Drinking Age Actof 1984 did this change. • 11. Analysis Essay On C.S. Lewis s Narnia C.S. Lewis uses a secondary world, Narnia, to convey complex, thought provoking messages to readers of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. This paper examines the way a selection of Narnia s key characteristics prompt debates over logic and faith, comment on the nature of spiritual and metaphysical journeys, allow readers to broaden their conception of their own capabilities, encourage new reflection on the story of Christ and help to clarify conceptions of good and evil. Second, the obscurity of Narnia s entrance suggests that such journeys cannot be sought out or forced, but rather will present themselves at places and times we least expect. Finally, the use of an ordinary wardrobe as the portal to Narnia makes Lewis s readers consider what fantastic journeys В– physical or otherwise В– may lay within the ordinariness of everyday existence. Another of Narnia s key characteristics is that its inhabitants revere and depend upon the children. At their temporary home in England, the children are unsupervised and irrelevant. The Professor involves himself little with the children s affairs В– as Peter notes, That old chap will let us do anything we like! (p.2) В– and Mrs. Macready displays impatient disregard for them. The children s situation breeds problems. Lucy is afraid of the Professor and her new surroundings, Edmund mocks the Professor s odd appearance and generally misbehaves, and Peter believes he and his siblings can be as mischievous as they please. The children bicker constantly. Without responsibilities and respect to accompany it, the freedom afforded by the Professor s indifference does not translate into maturity. Revised Order Of The Sacraments Of Initiation Revised Order of the Sacraments of Initiation Bishop ГЃlvaro Corrada said, The sacraments draw humanity into the truth and love of God revealed in Christ, thereby disposing the faithful to live this love more deeply in their daily lives of Christian freedom and witness. They serve to introduce us into the Catholic Church, increase our understanding of our religion, bestow upon us essential Christian virtues, and strengthen our faith. There are seven sacraments in total: Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Marriage. The first three Sacraments listed are the Sacraments of Initiation. If an 18 year old is enlisted into the United Statesmilitary and stationed in the U.S., they should be able to consume alcoholic beverages. Kant locates all truth inside the mind, as a pure product of reason, operating by means of rational categories. Although Kant acknowledges that all knowledge originates in the intuition of the senses, the intelligibility of sense experience he attributes to innateforms of apperception and to categoriesinherent to the mind. The innate categories shape the phenomena of sensible being, and Kantclaims nothing can be known or proved about the noumena, the presumed world external to the mind.1 Aquinas agrees that all knowledge comes through the senses, but disagrees with Kant in arguing that categorical qualities do not originate... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The two views of truth have divergent consequences for ethics. Aquinas philosophy produces a tradition of moral clarity that endures to the present, while the philosophy of Kant leads ultimately to the cultural relativism and moral skepticism that are widespread in the modern world. For Immanuel Kant, truth is accessible to the mind only because it derives from rational categories already in the mind. Although knowledge begins in the senses, Kant claims, besides what is given to the sensuous intuition, special concepts must yet be superadded concepts which have their origin wholly a priori in the pure understanding, and under which every perception must be first of all subsumed and then by their means changed into experience. 6 The sources of such synthetic a priori concepts are categories inherent in reason, and Kant supplies a table of such categories, including in it: Unity (measure), Plurality (magnitude), Totality (whole), Reality, Negation, Limitation, Substance, Cause, Community, Possibility, Existence, and Necessity.7 Thus, the understanding of any perceived thing as a whole entity, or as having an independent material existence, or as being caused by anything, or as itself the cause of anything has its origin in rational categories in the mind and is not traceable to any essential quality or state of being that can be attributed to the thing in itself, according to Kant. ... • 16. Monetary Policies And Monetary Policy Monetary Policies (Introduction) The objective of monetary policy is to reserve the worth of the money by keeping inflation low, stable and predictable that lets Canadians be more confident about the spending and investment choices. It reassures long term investment in Canada s economy as well as contributes to continuous job creation and better the production. It helps improve living standard. Canada s monetary policy outline consists of two key components working together and reinforcing each other: the inflation control target and the flexible exchange rate. The inflation control target directs the decisions of the Bank regarding the proper setting of the policy interest rate that maintains a stable price environment throughout the medium term. Influencing Short Term Interest Rates As to reach the inflation target, the banks have to make changes in the policy rate by raising or lowering it. If inflation is beyond target, the banks will have to increase the policy rate, this inspires institutions to increase interest rates on the loan and mortgages. Discouraging borrowing and spending which enables upward pressure on price. If inflation is under the goal, banks will lower the policy rate which would then encourage financial institutions to lower interest rates on the loans and mortgages. This information shows how much banks are concerned about inflation going higher or lower in terms of the goal. The key policy interest rates are when banks expect to be used in ... Explain The Terms Metaphor And Metonymy Masterkolloquium Literary Theory Winter term 2014/15 Professor: Dr. Laura Bieger Student: Anna Zaburdaeva Matriculation number: 3957299 31.03.2015 ESSAY The terms metaphor and metonymy made a regular appearance in our survey of modern literary theory. Discuss the significance that these terms assumed in the various schools of thought, and comment on both continuities and changes within the various contexts. Do you still find the terms useful for literary studies today? Roman Jakobson s article Two Aspects of Language and Two Types of Aphasic Disturbances changed dramatically the way literary critics use the terms metaphor and metonymy. Before that article metonymy was a rhetorical trope barely distinguishable from synecdoche. Since Jakobson introduced the dichotomy, metonymy was elevated to the status equal to metaphor, and viewed as its contrary. Both metaphor and metonymy ceased to perform only as rhetorical tropes and became the two principles defining relationships within language. This binary model has been developed, applied or challenged in many studies from linguistics and rhetoric, to literary theory, film, psychology. The characters in the novel such as Dulcinea, his love, Marcela, Maritornes and Sancho Panza his squire happens to play a great and important role in the novel when exampling the theme of love. The themes of love, care, infatuation and loyalty are greatly expressed throughout the novel. Throughout the novel, Cervantes is able to examine how one can differentiate true love from false and infatuated love. The protagonist, Don Quixote s obsessive reading of books of chivalry plays a major role in defining his character; his inspiration for his travels as a knight errant comes from the literature about chivalry that he reads, the literature that causes him to lose his mind and go mad. This is exemplified in a line from the speech given from the Athenian delegates to the Spartans, in which they say that as long as war continues it becomes an affair of chance from which neither side is exempt (1.78.2). In chapter 18 of book 4, Thucydides writes of another speech that was given by Spartan envoys to the Athenians after the events of the Battle of Pylos, where many Spartan hoplites were taken hostage. Although you are going there to assist those effected by the disaster you will need to make sure you do not become a distraction or even worse needing to be assisted yourself. Working within the system with the Incident Commander and his staff will ensure you are part of the team and not working against these efforts. • 37. Parenago 1802 Parenago 1802, a member of the в€ ј1 Myr Orion Nebula Cluster, is a double lined, detached eclipsing binary in a 4.674 d orbit, with equal mass components (M2/M1=0.985В±0.029). Here we present extensive V IC JHKS light curves spanning в€ ј15 yr, as well as a Keck/HIRES optical spectrum. The light curves evince a third light source that is variable with a period of 0.73 d, and is also manifested in the high resolution spectrum, strongly indicating the presence of a third starin the system, probably a rapidly rotating classical T Tauri star. We incorporate this third light into our radial velocity and light curve modeling of the eclipsing pair, measuring accurate masses (M1=0.391В±0.032, M2=0.385В±0.032 MвЉ™), radii (R1=1.73В±0.02, R2=1.62В±0.02 RвЉ™), and temperature ratio (Teff,1/Teff,2=1.0924В±0.0017). Thus the radii of the eclipsing stars differ by 6.9В±0.8%, the temperatures differ by 9.2В±0.2%, and consequently the luminosities differ by 62В±3%, despite having masses equal to within 3%. This could be indicative of an age difference of в€ ј 3 Г— 105 yr between the two eclipsing stars, perhaps a vestige of the binary formation history. This idea is expressed in The Follower by Seamus Heaney as well as in two short stories from Alistair Macleod s The Island ; The Boat and Golden Gift of Grey. . The texts illustrate the importance in establishing and maintaining connections of paternal nature. They divulge in the idea that incompatibility with one s home can affect the viewing of their place in the world, and indicate that qualities such as physical and intellectual skill can factor into a sense of belonging and place. Paternal connections are a focal issue addressed in all the texts, and are shown to have the ability to shape a child s identity. The Boat by Alistair Macleod ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Effect Of Bracing Or Surgical Treatments On Balance Control Effect of Bracing or Surgical Treatments on Balance Control in Idiopathic Scoliosis: Three Case Studies In adolescents, scoliosis is the most frequent spinal deformity. About 80 percent of scoliosis cases are idiopathic, meaning there is no known cause, although some believe that impairment in the sensory processing could be the cause. The purpose of this particular study is to see if orthopedic treatments can help people who have scoliosis have more balance control. It can be infantile (birth to three years), juvenile (two to ten years old), and degenerative (adulthood) scoliosis. The kind of scoliosis is determined based on the age of when someone is diagnosed. Scoliosis is detected when biomarkers are used to predict deformation of the spine or a progression risk. Scoliosis can be caused by one of six ways. It can be genetic, neurological, hormonal and metabolic, skeletal growth, biomechanical, and environmental. Three studies were done with one person per case. Case one was to see the effect of spine surgery and the control of the person s balance. Case two was to see the effect of bracing on balance control. Case three was to see the effect of spine surgery in adult s balance control. In the first case, a 17 year old male had a surgery that consisted of reducing the curves and vertebrae rotations using transpedicular screws. Eighteen months after surgery, the curve of his spine had an 18 degree right thoracic curve and a 14 degree left lumbar curve whereas ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Parents And Children Should Not Have Vaccinations Some critics believe parents and children should not have vaccinations. There s still a debate going on because the medical community does not agree. Healthcare professionals believes everyone should be vaccinated and it is very important. They believe vaccinations protect you when traveling, prevent childhood illnesses, it s painless, and you take it once and you are protected for life (Pros and Cons, 2015). These diseases from other countries can be brought back into the United States and cause an outbreak of diseases. Other people believe vaccinations are 90% 95% effective, but there is still 5% that can still come in contact with the disease (Pros and Cons, 2015). They think it doesn t capture the illness and immunity lasts longer if created by natural circumstances (Pros and Cons, 2015). Some schools require certain vaccinations to be taken before starting to school. Fourteen studies have been conducted by Amanda Peet, a vaccinemanufacturer, and she believes there is no association between autism and vaccines. No real studies have ever been done but medical professions believe this is fake (Peet, n.d). Whether or not a parent cannot pay for vaccinations is no problem. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) distributes vaccines to state health departments and other local agencies. These agencies distribute them to private physicians offices, at no charge to those receiving vaccines (Vaccines for Children, 2014). The Childhood Immunization Support Program (CISP) has ... This movie brings two different concepts called transactional leadership and transformational leadership. Transactional leadership styles are more concerned with maintaining the normal flow of operations, whereas a transformational leader goes beyond managing the daily tasks for leading their followers to success. Transactional leadership styles also include trying to establish direction, aligning people, they are dedicated to communication, creating teams, motivation and inspiration. A transformational leadership styles basically turn towards to creating the agenda and requests, they are dedicated to planning, policies and procedures. The leader s job ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another way that Coach Norman Dale encouraged confidence in his followers was by keeping them focused on their present task and familiarizing each one of them with their particular job on the court. It is important to mention some of the characters such as Jimmy, the shooter, and the teacher (Myra Fleeter). Jimmy is one of the best players in the team but he rejects to play with new coach. Therefore, coach needs to find a way to bring him back to the team. He uses reverse psychology in the situation when he explains Jimmy that team is all of them, not just him . Here coach shows expert power because he uses prior knowledge probably from previous situations in his life. When we talk about the shooter and his relationship with the coach, we can say that coach chooses the shooter for his assistant for several reasons. Firs of all, the shooter knows a lot about basketball so he shows the expert power. Also, Coach Dale gives him another chance because people deserve another chance . Also, some other people have previously put their trust in him by giving him, Coach Dale, a second chance. In the case of Myra Fleener, it can be said that she displays a very autocratic leadership style. She attempts to lead Coach Norman Dale with a firm hand with very little input. She pretends to ignore and put off what the coach has to say, but towards the end of the film she takes Norman s side and adjusts her leadership style to a more democratic view. She agrees with the coach that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Tribal leaders in the past were responsible for almost every facet of their clan s well being, including basic life necessities. As times evolved leaders took on more of a political role and the ruled kingdoms and became responsible for their civilizations continued existence. These leaders demanded loyalty from their subjects as their empire s very existence relied on it. Each style has its own characteristics but this however doesn t mean that one is right or wrong or that they are completely unrelated. The West Memphis Three Case Analysis The Case of the West Memphis Three involves the three teenage boys accused and convicted of murdering Michael Moore, Stevie Branch, and Christopher Byers in West Memphis, Arkansas on May 5th, 1993. The investigation, trial, and appeals that followed would put the Arkansas criminal justice system under scrutiny for their actions. The West Memphis Police Department arrested and charged Jason Baldwin, Damien Echols, and Jessie Misskelly, Jr. with the three boy s murders. The entire case was under the constant watch of the media and brought a great deal of attention to the actions and conduct of the West Memphis Police Department, as well as the Arkansas criminal justice system. Many outsiders got involved with the West Memphis Three case. Among these outsiders were famous musicians Eddy Vedder, lead singer of Pearl Jam and Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks, famous actors including Johnny Depp, and superstar director Peter Jackson. These celebrities helped to raise awareness of the case as well as to help raise money for the West Memphis three to obtain appropriate post conviction representation and unbiased forensic testing and analysis in the hopes of exonerating them of their convictions. While the new forensic evidence (and the new testing and expert analysis of the original evidence) ultimately helped the West Memphis Three become free men again, the question still remains as to who really murdered those three boys on May 5th, 1993 in West Memphis, Arkansas. Every individual think about his or her own success and happiness. Every individual makes his or her choice. But it is the opposite in collectivist cultures. Individuals view themselves as the members of groups and think about their group, community and family needs and goals. For example we have a group assignment in our university. The Tribe Of The Navajo Nation The Group of people that will be described in my paper is the Navajos of the Navajo Nation, located in the northeastern part of Arizona, and their religious beliefs. Another topic that will be discussed is the ceremonies that are held among the Navajo tribe. The reason this topic interest me is due to my wife and hearing stories about ways she was taught as a child. Also how much of an impact it has had in her life due to family members taking part in these ceremonies. According to the history of the Navajo Tribe, the Holy People lived in the underworld and helped by guiding the First Man and First Woman to earth (McCoy 1988). The Holy People are said to be attracted to songs, dances, and chants during the ceremony along with the creation of Sandpainting. The Sandpainting is used in the healing process of the ceremony to draw a picture that tells a story of the Holy People. The Navajo culture have amazed so many people to how beautifully constructed the rituals are performed. Although, the ritual has been passed on from generation to generation, how the Navajo rituals are ways of communication has been questioned by so many. Many believe that it way for the patient to come into ...harmony... with the universe (Klukhohn and Leighton 1974). About seventy five percent of the nation s four year old attend a preschool center, as do fifty percent of three year olds. (Barnett, 2008, page 3). Preschool has long been though to shape a child s academic life, putting a child ahead of the curve in kindergarten and leading them into a successful school career. The primary reason for attending preschool in past decades was the known benefits of socialization, but preschool has changed a lot over the years putting much more emphasis on cognitive development. Gone are the days when children only focused on colors, shapes, and numbers. Today s preschoolers are learning music and second languages. Questions still remain about how successful these programs are when it comes to preparing children for their future academic careers. This paper will examine the known advantages and disadvantages of sending a child off to preschool as well as what qualities a preschool should have. Quality of Care Research has shown that the true benefits of preschool programs are heavily dependent upon the setting and environment in which the learning is taking place. Choosing the correct school is crucial for proper learning and development in preschool aged children. All other western states have shut down establishments selling sex, except for Nevada. In as early as 1937, a law was developed during weekly health checks for all prostitutes. The mandatory testing began in 1986 requiring weekly STD testing and monthly testing for HIV and syphilis. Condoms have been mandatory since 1988 for oral sex and intercourse, and laws have even gone as far as making brothel owners liable for customers who become infected with HIV after visitation ( Legalizing Prostitution ). Despite the legal status of brothels, there are copious rules owners must follow to uphold their establishments. Brothels can only exist in counties of populations less than 400,000. As a result of this law, brothels are illegal in Las Vegas (Giang). In 1979, a state law banned brothels from advertising in counties where it was an illegal act. Brothels have even gone as far as advertising large parking spaces for truck drivers who wish to stop during their commutes. Brothels have many restrictions in Nevada, but prostitutes must follow rules as well. In the majority of Nevada s counties, prostitutes must be of twenty one years or older, with the exception of Storey and Lyon counties where the age is eighteen.
