11 July 2012 CSISA SSD Technology Evaluation and Capacity Building under CSISACSISA
This document provides an update on activities under Objective 6.2 of the Cereal Systems Initiative for South Asia (CSISA) project, which aims to understand constraints to productivity growth and adoption of resource-conserving technologies in South Asia. It summarizes surveys conducted in multiple villages and households across four hub regions to evaluate technologies and farmer perceptions. It also discusses capacity building activities including student internships and publications produced.
The Wildcats Activ8 Clubs end of year report for 2010-2011 summarizes that there were 52 clubs across 42 locations serving 14 district council areas, with 1,670 participants of which 1,218 were WildCubs at the bronze level and 73% of participants were boys. The report also asked clubs for feedback on helpful support which included forums, training, new drills, fun festivals, and free promotional items.

The LIVES project is a partnership between ILRI, IWMI, the Ministry of Agriculture, and regional agricultural bureaus in Ethiopia, supported by CIDA. The project focuses on developing high-value livestock and irrigated crop value chains for smallholders. It will work in 10 zones across Amhara, Tigray, Oromia, and SNNP regions. The goal is to increase income and gender equitable wealth for smallholders through market-oriented production of crops like vegetables, fruits, and livestock like dairy, beef, poultry. Key activities include value chain development, capacity building, knowledge management, and action research over livestock and irrigation value chains.

1) The study evaluated the feasibility of growing three rice crops per year in the coastal zones of Bangladesh where fresh water is available year-round.
2) The study tested different establishment dates for aus and aman rice varieties as well as sowing dates for boro rice. It found that growing three rice crops per year is possible and can yield 13.4 to 17.2 tons per hectare per year.
3) The study recommends further evaluating the system over a range of weather conditions and developing ecologically friendly management practices to address potential increases in pests and diseases from triple rice cropping.

BRAC aims to increase agricultural and aquacultural productivity in coastal Bangladesh through several strategies. • Technical services gave lower scores to indicators than producers
• Researchers gave higher score for perceived benefit than producers

Number of participants were reduced after the second IP meetings to 2 to 4 focal persons per stakeholder group
-Participantion at the IP meetings was male dominated - cultural factors as well as pertinence of the issues addressed at the meetings to women
-Producers accounted for 35 to 60% of the participants at the IP meetings - Domination by producers could also be explained by the fact that in any value chain, there is a need to focus initially on increasing production to satisfy market demand.
-Innovative aspect: collective implementation of these activities by members from different communities and the involvement of the technical agents providing necessary advisory services. - Linkages to services essentially entailed linking certain actors to another in the IP and this specifically involved linking the producers to technical services
