Everything was looking good for Joe Paterno and Penn State football as his football managing
career rose with an overall record of 298–136–3 but in 2011, all that changed. Back in 2000 a janitor
of Penn State witnessed Sandusky receiving oral sex from a young boy, the janitor reported what he
saw to co–workers and his supervisor but none of these men reported these actions to authorities. It
wasn't until November 5, 2011 that Sandusky was arrested on a $100,000 bail and up to 40 criminal
counts. ESPN were quickly in the scene to investigate and report the allegations on Sandusky. They

Governor, Tom Corbett took action and warned students to refrain from any violence and should
monitor their behavior. "The crowd initially was a peaceful demonstration against Coach Paterno's
firing. The crowd quickly turned from a peaceful demonstration to a riotous mob," State College
police said in a statement. "The mob attempted to light vehicles on fire, and tore down light posts
and street signs." (Klopman) University officials reminded the students that their actions are
affecting the family of the victims and other victims in the community that were sexually abused.
Assistant coach, Mike McQueary testified to the grand jury in December 2010 that he saw Sandusky
sodomize a naked boy of about 10 years old in the football team's locker room shower in 2001. The
jury quickly saw his testimony more credible than Curley's and Schultz's. Because of this, Penn
State placed Mike on administrative leave. "McQueary testified in a grand jury investigation that
eventually led to child sex–abuse charges being filed against former defensive coordinator Jerry

Sexual Abuse is unwanted sexual behavior by an individual using force, threats or any other violent
acts. Many sexual abuse victims do not report to authorities. Children are the most vulnerable
involving sexual abuse before the age of seventeen. Sexual abuse makes many individuals nauseous
about the topic and they refuse to bring it up. In fact, it scars the people who have suffered from it

Honesty means to be truthful in any circumstance and all the people involved or even knew about
the scandal was not honest at all and lied when they were asked about any question regarding the
situation. Courage is the ability to do something that frightens someone to do an action and only the
grad assistant had the courage to bring the situation to the light and the people higher up decided to
keep it low and it turned out bad for them. Temperance is the moderation of physical pleasures,
especially those associated with eating, drinking, and sex. Sandusky didn't moderate his physical
pleasure and decided to get his physical pleasure from children and not the women he was married.
Justice is to be fair to all stakeholders, and it also includes hard work, good ideas, and fair practices.
Sandusky was not fair for putting his fellow co–workers and university in that situation. My opinion
on the Penn State scandal I think everyone involved keeps trying to take the easy way out and
deciding to keep it low and out of the light. I applaud the grad assistant trying to stand up for the
children and bringing the situation to a person higher up in power. If they would have brought many

Currently in the news, there is a major event that pertains to the topic of the psychology of trauma.
This event is the investigation of Jerry Sandusky and his alleged conviction of sexual abuse. Jerry
Sandusky, an assistant football coach at Penn State University, has been accused of sexually abusing
boys in the basement of his home and in the school workout room and locker room. This
investigation was triggered by one of the victims who went to the police and since then, more
victims have come out as well. This boy stated that the attacks lasted for about four years. Jerry

However, I would have to agree with the first half and say that Joe Paterno's actions were
inadequate. Although Joe Paterno reported what he saw to the Penn State president his responsibility
shouldn't have ended there. Yes, he fulfilled his obligation to report any illegal actions on campus
but when the Penn State President chose not to take legal action Paterno should have made the
moral decision and had gone to the authorities. Legally, he fulfilled his obligation and therefore no
longer holds any responsibility in the eyes of the legal system. In the eyes of morality though, his
responsibility in the matter was not over just because he reported it to who he was supposed to. This
major problem should have been dealt with a long time ago. It's just a moral obligation that Joe
Paterno should have acted upon. So yes I feel he deserved to be fired. Everyone who knew about it
should have reported it to legal authorities. His great athletic achievements and mutual respect
should have pushed towards the issue being resolved and not swept under the rug for it to come out
years after and now resulting in him being fired. Every action has a reaction and in this case the
reaction is due to Paternos lack of action.

November 5, 2011, Pennsylvania grand jury indicted former Penn State assistant coach Gerald
Sandusky, accusing him of sexually assaulting young boys. On June 22, 2012, Sandusky was found
guilty of 45 of 48 child sex abuse charges. Nearly four months later, (October 9, 2012) Sandusky
received a 30 – 60 year sentence. This scandal eventually forced further investigations into whether
or not Penn State officials neglected to act when individuals reported Sandusky's inappropriate

It's considered blasphemy to speak ill of "Joe Pa" in many local circles. He was untouchable in
every sense of the word, and he obviously knew it" (Hanford, 2012). However, after the release of
the Freeh report and events following, Paterno's character became tarnished. Most new articles,
blogs and opinions written imply that Paterno put himself and the football program ahead of the
welfare of children lives. For example, in an article published July 14, 2012 it was reported that
when Joe Paterno learned that prosecutors were investigating Sandusky (January 2011), he began to

Paterno and other top university officials protected Sandusky to "avoid the consequences of bad
publicity" for the university, its football program and the coach's reputation.

report Sandusky to child welfare authorities and handle the matter internally after Wide Receivers

Intro
For the coaching observation project I observed the head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes, Urban
Meyer. I watched him on TV when Ohio State played Penn State. The reason I selected Urban
Meyer to do my coaching observation is because he is the coach I decided to model my coaching
philosophy after. The reason I chose this game specifically is because this is a very important game
and I want to see how he handles his team in high–pressure situations.

His non–verbal communication was just his facial expressions that his players and assistant coaches
can see. His team was losing for most of the game and you could tell he was not happy. Penn State
returned the opening kick off and he looked disappointed, but he kind of kept his composure. Later
in the 2nd quarter during another kick return that was returned pretty far by Penn State his anger was
a little more visible as he was yelling and appeared very angry. Later once Ohio State started to play
better you could see his attitude change and he got happier. I'm not sure if his negative attitude made
his team play worse, it is just something to think about whenever I am a head coach.

Reinforcement techniques are used to increase or decrease a behavior. During a game, especially on
the stage that Urban Meyer is coaching, it is important for his players to play well. Some techniques
that Urban Meyer used to reinforce his players during the game I observed were negative discipline.
His special teams were struggling a lot, especially his kickoff team. They were playing so bad that
he decided to remove multiple players from it and add starters from other positions onto the kick–off
team to try and have better success. This shows that if you want to play, you have to perform.

In 2011 the initial shock of the media and reports of the Sandusky scandal uncovering years of
victims and allegations, left spectators in disbelief. The idea that this type of abuse went undetected
from 1994 to 2009 seemed preposterous. The fact of the matter is that Sandusky was enabled to
continue his abuse through high ranking school officials sweeping Sandusky's behavior under the
rug (Chappell, 2012).
The school officials that contributed to covering up the Sandusky scandal were: Penn State athletic
director Tim Curley, senior vice president for finance and business including overseeing the
university police Gary Schultz, Penn State football coach, Joe Paterno and university president,
Graham Spanier. All four of the elite university officials became informed of Sandusky's sexual
misconduct by a graduate assistant Mike McQueary who later became assistant coach to Paterno
(Chappell, 2012). After Sandusky's sexual misconduct was officially brought to the attention of
these key officials the solution was to basically punish Sandusky by telling him he is no longer

Before this situation was brought to light, head coach Joe Paterno was looked at as one of the best

penetration. Protected by the fame and success of Penn State's football team Sandusky's crime were
thrown under the rug for decades. Numerous officials discrediting victims and witnesses and the
school handing out settlements like candy to keep it out of the media. Just in 2013 Penn State paid
26 Sandusky victims a $60 million settlement. With the shield of the football program, coaches,
school administrators and local law enforcement Sandusky was able to continue his grotesque deeds.
Until the two year grand jury investigation which concluded with the indictment on 52 charges of
child molestation in 2011 that led to the arrest of Sandusky. Sandusky charges were eventually
dropped to 48 and cover a period of 15 years from 1994 to 2009. Although there were earlier
incidents that were discredited and due to statute of limitations, Sandusky eluded those charges.

function for the organization changed. When it comes to management, they have to be held
accountable for their actions. They also have to communicate more and better to ensure another
incident such as the Sandusky sex scandal happens again. As for human resources, they have to

was self–taught through his readings of classical Arabic literature, American fiction, and English
poetry. Ali then began to write poems in the 1970s. He wrote a poem entitled "Meeting at an
Airport" which is based on his personal experiences. Without knowing his background information
and history, it is unclear about what exactly is meant by this poem. This piece of literature elicits the
sense of reconnection and the exact same feelings for each other just like the first time they met. In
the poem, "Meeting at an Airport" written by Taha Muhammad Ali, historical context is needed to
understand this piece because it emphasizes the theme, the purpose of the poem, and establishes

puts his career on the line and when games are lost, so is their job. Several coaches who have had
the same lack of success that Paterno has had lately have lost their jobs. Bob Davie was fired from
