This session critically evaluates attempts that have been made to support communication and collaboration through ‘mapping’ OER focussing on The Open Learning Network (OLnet) Evidence Hub which used the concept of ‘Contested Collective Intelligence’ and The UNESCO OER Mapping Project which set out some quite specific protocols for metadata.
There will be a demonstration of the new Evidence Hub being developed as part of the OER Research Hub (OERRH) project. This hub is designed to overcome some of the issues that manifested themselves in these earlier projects, a range of different data sources, the importance of data visualization, and account for how different types of evidence might be flexibly accommodated.
There will be an opportunity for delegates to discuss the idea of ‘mapping’ the OER evidence base and what the OER community might want from such services.
OER Impact: Towards an Evidence Base
In this presentation I critically evaluate attempts that have been made to support communication and collaboration through ‘mapping’ OER. After endorsing the basic rationale for mapping evidence surrounding OER implementation I review two examples of where this has been attempted. The Open Learning Network (OLnet) Evidence Hub used the concept of ‘Contested Collective Intelligence’ to inform a discourse-centric social-semantic web application that could structure the discourses of the OER community. I provide a short critique of this approach which focuses on the data model and the metadata requirements made upon users. I go on to consider the UNESCO OER Mapping Project which set out some quite specific protocols for metadata but never got beyond prototype stage
A rationale for a new, improved evidence hub is provided along with a number of design considerations and a proposal for future development. I conclude with a brief presentation of the new Evidence Hub being developed as part of the OER Research Hub (OERRH) project. I describe the ways in which our evidence model tries to overcome some of the issues which were manifest in these earlier projects, a range of different data sources, the importance of data visualization, and account for how different types of evidence might be flexibly accommodated. The final part of the session will be given over to group discussion about the idea of ‘mapping’ the OER evidence base and what the OER community might want from such services.

Bibliometrics in practice 2016 | Breakout session | Designing the academic self
Subtitle: What metrics based on publication and citation data can and can't tell us.
Following on from DORA (2013), the idea of responsible metrics has developed a clear voice in publications such as the Leiden Manifesto (2015) and the Metric Tide (2015). This breakout session described how library staff at Lancaster University became involved in a seminar series entitled ‘Designing the academic self’ (2016), and contributed insights into what metrics based on publication and citation data can and can’t tell us. Participants took part in the discussion-based activities that were used to illustrate the uses and limitations of quantitative indicators in the original seminar.

This session will look at how Edith Cowan University is using Blackboard Analytics for Learn to empower staff and students with their own data, allowing them to make informed and timely decisions in their own teaching and learning journeys.

This document proposes an innovative model for pharmacy education that improves upon the current model. It suggests adopting a hybrid curriculum with reduced in-class time and increased flexibility. This allows for eliminating summer vacation and shortening winter break to graduate students one year earlier. It also recommends establishing a multidisciplinary simulation center and increasing community engagement and international experiences. The goals are to improve retention rates, student engagement, and incorporate more active and team-based learning while utilizing technology to its fullest extent.

Standardized tests can provide benefits related to information and motivation. When it comes to information, tests provide data that can be used to diagnose student and teacher performance and ensure alignment of standards, instruction, and expectations across schools. Regarding motivation, students, teachers, and schools are encouraged to demonstrate competence and focus their efforts on material that is emphasized by tests, whether to avoid negative consequences or pursue positive ones. However, relying solely on computerized keyword searches to research the benefits of standardized testing can be inadequate and introduce bias, as important studies may not be found in databases or labeled with keywords related to testing benefits. A variety of methodologies beyond keyword searches are needed to fully understand the achievement effects of standardized testing.
LASI workshop social learning analytics

Developing Conceptual Understanding Through Alternative Assessment

When it comes to information, tests provide data that can be used to diagnose student and teacher performance and ensure alignment of standards, instruction, and expectations across schools. Regarding motivation, students, teachers, and schools are encouraged to demonstrate competence and focus their efforts on material that is emphasized by tests, whether to avoid negative consequences or pursue positive ones. However, relying solely on computerized keyword searches to research the benefits of standardized testing can be inadequate and introduce bias, as important studies may not be found in databases or labeled with keywords related to testing benefits. A variety of methodologies beyond keyword searches are needed to fully understand the achievement effects of standardized testing.

However, institutions must address issues around purpose, assessment, technology and faculty/student buy-in. This session will present an overview of the Global OER Graduate Network research methods handbook. The handbook is being developed by members of the network who are researchers in open education, and will serve as a useful starting point for anyone wishing to do research in education with a focus on OER, MOOCs or OEP.
To contextualise this approach, an accessible and brief description of the types of methods typically used in research into education and educational technology will be provided. Some of the contrasting philosophical, epistemological and ontological commitments of different research paradigms will be used to differentiate alternative methodologies. Theoretical perspectives will be outlined but not fully explored.
State-of-the-art approaches will be explored and their relevance for open education explained. The presentation will use examples of current doctoral research to highlight the use of different methods, and will convey insights into using different methods as shared by the researchers. This includes reflections on using different methods, and advice for conducting similar work.
Finally, the presentation will offer up for discussion a provisional model of open scholarship including open practices (agile project management; directly influencing practice; radical transparency; sharing research instruments; social media presence; networks); open science (open access; open data; open licensing); digital innovation (HCI; data science; open source technologies); and normative elements (challenging dominant narratives; promoting social justice; and reducing barriers to educational access).
European Perspectives on Learning Analytics: LAK15 LACE panel

Catherine Paul and Emily Renoe from the University of British Columbia presented on the history and use of ePortfolios at UBC. They provided many examples of how ePortfolios have been implemented across different faculties and disciplines at UBC. The presentation covered the objectives, agenda, brief history of ePortfolios at UBC, challenges and successes from past pilots, examples of tools and current ePortfolio projects, and plans to revive the ePortfolio community of practice. iDecide - http://www.idecide-project.eu. This policy reform project aims to develop an innovative toolkit and a mobile app to support evidence-based policy making. The focus is the reduction of disparities in learning outcomes and marginalization, by supporting school leaders, school staff, and policymakers to engage in shared and inclusive decision making.
ENTRINNO – Online game for entrepreneurship and innovation - http://www.entrinno.org. As part of this project we developed an online game teaching youth entrepreneurial skills. The project was implemented and evaluated in 8 EU countries.

The virtuous triangle – how to make Open Badges, Mahara and Moodle work toget...

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. - I’m doing a quick introduction to a piece of work commissioned by PebbleLearning that identified all peer reviewed articles that involved PebblePad.

- There is an assumption that employers will be keen to view an e-portfolio, but very little evidence in the literature that this is successful in practice and the impact an e-portfolio has on a potential employer. There is also a lack of literature that claims PebblePad can help students compile applications for jobs.
- NSS – although we seek student feedback, so far there is no evidence of Pebblepad being used to address some of the issues raised e.g. feedback/assessment
- Some minor surprises like the use of PebblePad to collect quantitative data for the accounting study. But also I wonder if the time for surveying student perceptions and reactions to the software is over. Has PebblePad moved beyond the stage where student perceptions need to be researched (of course student feedback will always need to be gathered and responded to) to a place where it is it naturally underpins learner centred approaches be they feminist pedagogy or social constructivism. So it’s over to you and can you help me add to the list either by sending me a link to any articles missing. Or finishing an article
