The past five years have seen a dramatic growth in interest in the emerging field of Learning Analytics (LA), and particularly in the potential the field holds to address major challenges facing education. However, much of the work in the learning analytics landscape today is closed in nature, small in scale, tool- or software-centric, and relatively disconnected from other LA initiatives. This lack of collaboration, openness, and system integration often leads to fragmentation where learning data cannot be aggregated across different sources, institutions only have the option to implement "closed" systems, and cross disciplinary research opportunities are limited. Beyond the immediate concerns this fragmentation creates for educators and learners, a closed approach dramatically limits our ability to build upon successes, learn from failures and move beyond the "pockets of excellence (and failures)? approach that typifies much of the educational technology landscape. The potential benefits of openness as a core value within the learning analytics community are numerous. Learning initiatives could be informed by large scale research projects. Open-source software, such as dashboards and analytics engines, could be available free of licensing costs and easily enhanced by others, and OERs could become more personalized to match learners' needs. Open data sets and reproducible papers could rapidly spread understanding of analytical approaches, enabling secondary analysis and comparison across research projects. To realize this future, leaders within the learning analytics, open technologies (software, standards, etc.), open research (open data, open predictive models, etc.) and open learning (OER, MOOCs, etc.) fields have established a "network of practice" aimed at connecting subject matter experts, projects, organizations and companies working in these domains. As an initial organizing event, these leaders organized an Open Learning Analytics (OLA) Summit directly following the 2014 Learning Analytics and Knowledge (LAK) conference this past March as means to further the goal of establishing "openness' as a core value of the larger learning analytics movement. This panel session will bring together several thought leaders from the Open Learning Analytics community who participated in the Summit to facilitate an interactive dialog with attendees on the intersection of learning analytics and open learning, open technologies, open data, and open research. The presenters represent a broad range of experience with institutional analytics projects, an open source development consortium, the sharing of open learner data, and academic research on open learning environments.

ABSTRACT Learning analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about learners and their contexts, for purposes of understanding and optimizing learning and the environments in which it occurs. Data driven approaches to teaching and learning are rapidly being adopted within educational environments, but there is still much confusion about what learning analytics is, what it can do, and how it is best employed. This talk will provide a general overview of the field of learning analytics, its terminology and methods, as well as contemporary ethical debates. It will also introduce several open source and Emory-supported analytics tools available to students and instructors to facilitate the achievement of various learning outcomes.

European Perspectives on Learning Analytics: LAK15 LACE panel

LACE Project

Panel presentation at Learning Analytics and Knowledge 2015 (LAK15) in Poughkeepsie, NY, USA by a team of speakers from the LACE project. Since the emergence of learning analytics in North America, researchers and practitioners have worked to develop an international community. The organization of events such as SoLAR Flares and LASI Locals, as well as the move of LAK in 2013 from North America to Europe, has supported this aim. There are now thriving learning analytics groups in North American, Europe and Australia, with smaller pockets of activity emerging on other continents. Nevertheless, much of the work carried out outside these forums, or published in languages other than English, is still inaccessible to most people in the community. This panel, organized by Europe’s Learning Analytics Community Exchange (LACE) project, brings together researchers from five European countries to examine the field from European perspectives. In doing so, it will identify the benefits and challenges associated with sharing and developing practice across national boundaries.

DESCRIPTION: Learning analytics is at a critical juncture in its lifecycle. To date, much of the learning analytics-related research, software development, and standards work that exists has taken place in relative isolation. This lack of collaboration, openness, and integrated systems greatly limits the potential of learning analytics. LA initiatives have typically been dependent upon “closed” systems, proprietary data models and single use tools – as opposed to an integrated software suite for analyzing and communicating data on learning processes. As institutions begin to move past discussion and into implementation of learning analytics environments, the realization of an open source platform for learning analytics becomes increasingly important as an option for institutions to consider alongside commercial offerings. In this presentation, learning analytics practitioners Josh Baron, Sandeep Jayaprakash and Alan Berg discuss a strategic vision of an open source platform, including standards, systems, and tools, that can lower the barrier to entry for institutions looking to get started with learning analytics. There will be a short demo of current components of the platform as well as details on accessing/contributing to the open-source code repository and how to get more involved in the Apereo LAI.

Some evidence has shown that using KF enhances students’ learning and develops their generic skills such as problem-solving skills, critical thinking skills, and so on. The purpose of this study is to examine how Secondary One students of a multi-ethnic private school in Hong Kong view knowledge building processes using KF in inquiring water purification whilst collaborating by a group of Spanish students. Primary data source includes focus group interviews, as triangulated by observations and online discussion. Findings and discussion of students’ views upon knowledge building process will be presented. Implications for curriculum and pedagogical design will be discussed.

This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence. The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth. Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration. The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority. Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages. Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
