Thor Sterker has over 35 years of hand-on offshore engineering & project management
experience in drilling, offshore transport and installation work. Since 1990 he has been
specializing in decommissioning projects. In a client representative role, he has been involved in
the Gulf of Mexico, North Sea and South East Asia platform removal projects. Over the years he
specialized in ROV, diving and subsea cutting projects. As a consultant he has performed FEED
studies as well as PEER reviews of FPSO projects and participated in Environmental Impact
Assessments.

About your Expert Trainer: Thor Sterker
After graduating as a mechanical engineer in 1977, Thor commenced his career in the oil & gas
industry as a mud logger data engineer for ultra-deep onshore wells in Europe. In 1979, he
joined, offshore construction company Heerema Marine Contractors as field engineer. As Field
Engineer he was involved in more than 65 offshore installation projects, and as Consultant /
Superintendant he was involved in almost every North Sea decommissioning project and
worldwide in more than 175 decommissioning projects.
Thor has over 35 years of hands-on offshore engineering & project management experience in
drilling, offshore transport and installation work. Since 1990 he has specialized in
decommissioning projects. In the early days of platform decommissioning he Researched & Developed innovative subsea
cutting tools, offshore installation and decommissioning techniques and platform decontamination methods. Since 2011,
as Technical Advisor to the Lenders (Mortgagee in Possession) he was involved in repossessing assets such as the
repossession of the Platform Etesco Millenium, FPSO OSX 2, and a Deep DP Drilling Vessel in Brazil.
In an effort to change the “mind set” about decommissioning he co-organized four International Conferences in
Aberdeen, Petten and Den Helder on the subject of “Decommissioning & Re-using of Platform Facilities” and presented
several papers on the subject of decommissioning, subsea cutting and re-use of platforms. In 1994 he took the initiative
to develop the platform re-use software (now called an App) and has participated in the development of the project
since that time. His HSE performance to date is: NO Lost Time Incidents on any project.
