Advanced Well Engineering Program
About this program
This intensive 2 x 2 week program has been put together to
cover Advanced Well Engineering topics. The program intends
to uplift the knowledge and skills for engineers, who are or
will be directly involved in well and completion design. It will
also benefit staff that are or will be working as a member of a
day-to-day operations team.
The courses present advanced concepts of drilling and
completion operations, plus post-completion enhancement
(workovers). Participants will learn to visualize and
troubleshoot what is happening downhole, discover what can
be accomplished and optimized, and learn how drilling and
completions can alter reservoir performance.
By attending this program, you will be more effective when
working amongst seasoned and professional engineers. You
will be able to lead and participate in meetings and visibly
contribute to planning and executing a confident well
program. We like to emphasize that in order for the
candidate to fully understand the subject matter, employing
companies are encouraged to provide further practical
training opportunities aligned with the topics being taught in
the AWEP.

Program Outcome
The AWEP aims to address the following knowledge, skill levels and the general descriptions of these are
as follows: -
How does the AWEP reinforce learning?
What the drilling and completion & well intervention AWEP programs have
in common is a ‘red thread exercise’. The objective of this exercise is to
reinforce classroom training by establishing links with actual field
operations. The exercise focusses on the wellsite activities of an Offshore
Business Unit. The emphasis will be on well and completion design through
‘irregular’ meetings in the office but also on ‘day-to-day’ operational
aspects using daily drilling and daily completion reports. The peripheral
aspects of the Business Unit will also be covered and viewed with respect
to their impact on wellsite activities. The candidate engineer will be acting
as a well engineer or completion engineer for the Business Unit. Every day
of the course, approximately 1 hour will be devoted to this ‘red thread
exercise’, as we strongly believe that including this exercise will accelerate
the maturing process of the candidate engineer.
How will this program be conducted?
The program will feature a mixture of informal teaching and lectures. In
addition, group exercises are used to reinforce the subjects covered during
the lectures. This encourages cross discipline awareness, communication and
motivates team building. Further a series of questions related to each
relevant section shall be used to ensure that each candidate fully
understands each subject. Experienced tutors will support the candidate in
acquiring advanced well engineering knowledge through an intensive 4 week
learning experience.

Who should attend this program?
AWEP is designed for experienced engineers who are directly or indirectly involved in
the delivery of wells, including office-based planning, operations well engineers and
field-based operator or contractor supervisory staff. Participants to this course must
have prior awareness level knowledge about well engineering and operations concepts.
This is an advanced level course.
Program Certification
Upon successfully completing the assessments of each of the 2 week programs, participants will achieve a
“Certificate of Achievement”. This is certificate will be issued by PetroEdge, as an approved training provider of the
Energy Institute, UK. Participants will also receive a “Continuing Professional Development” certificate from the CPD,

Your Program Directors:
Gordon Duncan
Gordon has over 37 years of oilfield experience specializing in Technical and Commercial
Operations in Drilling, Completions & Well Services professional with both IOC’s & various
service companies, just to name a few, include Shell EP International, Santos, Petro-Canada,
Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) and BP. Todate, he has taken on several training
instructor assignments around the world including Malaysia, Spain, Thailand, Brazil, the UAE,
Iraq, Iran & Indonesia as well as Australia. He currently delivers training on Completions
Fundamentals for BP Well Site Leaders of the Future and the Chevron “Horizon Programme to Trainee Drill Site
Managers”. This programme has spanned over 18 courses delivered in Houston, Baku, Duri, Bangkok, Aberdeen &
Perth. During his career, he has also been actively involved in the preparation of Management Systems, Operating
Procedures, Operations Manuals, peer reviews of legislation for ISO & BSEE. All of these documents require both a
technical knowledge and the ability to transfer this knowledge into the written word.
Gerard de Blok
Gerard holds a BSc degree in Mechanical Engineering and has 41 years of experience
as a Well Engineer. From 1974 till 2007 he worked for Shell International as Senior
Drilling Supervisor, Drilling Application Engineer, Drilling Projects Engineer and as
Training Course Director. His work in Shell had provided him the opportunity to work
in several international field locations, including Malaysia, Russia, Oman, Netherlands,
Denmark and Indonesia. From 2007 to 2015, he worked as Wells Staff Development
Manager in China, responsible for coaching, mentoring and recruiting the new
generation of well engineers. He has great interest and has been actively involved in matters related to
well control since 1994, notably his period as IWCF Chairman in the 1990’s. Gerard is an IWCF and IADC
approved Instructor and Assessor and provides lectures on Well Engineering topics like Basic and
Advanced Well Engineering, Stuck Pipe Prevention and HPHT Planning & Well Control. He also held the
function of field visit coordinator and lecturer in Drilling Engineering at the Delft University of
Technology, Department of Geo-technology. Gerard now works as a consultant providing various well
engineering courses.
