Repair, overlay, and reconstruction options were compared for maintaining and rehabilitating PCC pavements. Considerations included thickness, age, condition, traffic, and budget. Reconstruction using 8" DCP on prepared subgrade was estimated at $990K/mi. 3R with 10% repair and 4" HMA overlay was estimated at $490K/mi. Maintenance repair of 2% and joint sealing was estimated at $90K/mi.
Gravel Roads - The Economic Backbone of the StateUGPTI
The Gravel Roads presentation helps local leaders understand aspects of gravel roads. A review of roadway shape, aggregate gradation, clay binder, roadway problems/solutions provides a solid foundation of knowledge for anyone wanting to understand how to improve gravel roadways. Clay binder is a focal point for the technology transfer. To insure that a quality gravel is purchased, a gravel needs to be specified and tested for gradation and PI. PI, plasticity index, is the engineering property that defines the amount of clay in the fine portion of the gravel material. Clay is the binder that holds gravel rock and fines together, much like cement in concrete. Gravel produced without clay will result in roadway sections that yield excessive dust, wash-boarding and float; items that result in increased life cycle costs and reduced safety levels. Contact NDLTAP if your group can benefit from quality gravel roads. NDLTAP is offering the presentation to local leaders across the state.
MANUFACTURE OF INTERLOCKING CONCRETE PAVING BLOCKS WITH FLY ASH AND GLASS POWDERIAEME Publication
Problems associated with construction site have been known for many years. Construction industry has to support a world of continuing population growth and economic development.
Interlocking concrete paving blocks are ideal materials on the footpaths, parking areas, gardens, etc. for easy laying, better look and finish. But now being adopted extensively in different uses where the conventional construction of pavement using hot bituminous mix or cement concrete technology is
not feasible or desirable. The rising costs of construction materials and the need to adhere to sustainability, alternative construction techniques and materials are being sought.
At the California Asphalt Pavement Association (CalAPA) Spring Asphalt Pavement Conference & Equipment Expo held on March 23-24, 2023 in Ontario, Calif., a presentation titled, "Compaction of Asphalt Pavements" was delivered by John Harvey, PhD, Director – City and County Pavement Improvement Center (CCPIC).
Pavement performance requires a proper compaction of the asphalt mixture. Our partners at CCPIC will provide an overview of the importance of pavement compaction and an overview of the roles of contractors and agency representatives to maximize the performance of the pavement.

Casing
• What is casing?
• Pipe that is API certified for its specific application
• Why is casing set?
• Zonal Isolation when cemented in place
• Casing point selection
• Regulations
• Area Geology
• Formation Pressures
• As the operator, who decides on casing points?
2
Casing
• API casing is available in standard sizes from 4-1/2” to 20” OD
• Usually steel but can be aluminum, fiberglass, stainless steel,
plastic, titanium etc.
• One piece of casing pipe is referred to as a “joint” of casing
• Casing length is dependent on the “range” of pipe
• Range-1: 18-22ft
• Range-2: 27-30ft
• Range-3: 38-45ft
• Casing Threads are defined by the coupling type
• API Threads
• LTC: Long thread coupling
• STC: Short thread coupling
• BTC: Buttress thread coupling
• Semi & Premium Threads
• See VAM Presentation

Casing
• Casing Components
• Casing
• Size, Weight, Grade, Threads
• 9-5/8" 53.5# P-110 LTC Rg 3
• See Casing Data Chart
• What is Drift Diameter?
• Pup Joints
• Float Collars
• Float Shoe
• Guide Shoe
• Centralizers
• Baskets
• Scratchers/Scrapers

Casing
• Running Casing
• Bales/Elevators
• Power Tongs
• Torque Turn
• Calculate weight and Hookload HL
• Calculate collapse, how often should you fill the pipe?
• Is the pipe taking the proper amount of fluid to fill? CSGcap
• Is the proper amount of fluid coming back to the pits as the
casing is run in the hole? CSGcap & CSGdisp
• Once casing is landed, circulated mud. Calculate B/U
5
Casing
• Centralization
• Vertical Wells
• Never truly vertical, usually spiral
• Typically use bow spring type centralizers
• There are state regulations on centralizer placement
• The shoe is very important to be centralized
• Horizontal Wells
• Balance between too many and not enough centralizers
• Many types: rigid, floating, bow spring, bladed, spiral bladed, etc.
• Centralizer design software can model the well as drilled and suggest
centralizer placement
• High dogleg areas need more frequent centralizers to obtain
sufficient standoff
6
Casing
• Stand-off
• Pipe Stand-off is a major contributor to hole cleaning, mud
removal, and cement quality.
• % 𝑆𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑜𝑓𝑓 = ൗ𝑊𝑛 𝑅2−𝑅1 ∗ 100%
7
Casing
• Stand-off
• The Stand-off formula results a percentage, where 0% represents
the pipe in contact with the wellbore wall. 100% represents the
pipe is perfectly centered in the well.
• When the pipe is not centered, the wider portions will promote
flow due to less resistance. There can be pockets of cuttings or
mud in the tighter areas causing
Presentation delivered by Frank Farshidi, Ph.D., P.E., City of San Jose, at the CalAPA Fall Asphalt Pavement Conference Oct. 24-25, 2018 in Sacramento, Calif.
At the CalAPA Fall Asphalt Pavement Conference held Oct. 27, 2022 in Sacramento, a presentation on compaction of Asphalt Pavements was delivered by DingXin Cheng PhD, Director California Pavement Preservation Center (CP2). Pavement performance requires a proper compaction of the asphalt mixture. John Harvey PhD, Director – City and County Pavement Improvement Center (CCPIC).
Agencies throughout California utilize pavement management systems to monitor existing pavement condition. A successful program integrates the existing pavement condition with a toolbox of various treatments for different pavement needs. The director of the influential University of California Pavement Research Center will offer insight and best practices drawn from many years of research into effective pavement program management.
Scott Weiland gives a presentation on the subject of maintenance of Parking Structures. He discusses the engineering components that go into building, maintaining, and repairing parking structures so that they last.

Enterprise Excellence is Inclusive Excellence.pdfKaiNexus
Enterprise excellence and inclusive excellence are closely linked, and real-world challenges have shown that both are essential to the success of any organization. To achieve enterprise excellence, organizations must focus on improving their operations and processes while creating an inclusive environment that engages everyone. In this interactive session, the facilitator will highlight commonly established business practices and how they limit our ability to engage everyone every day. More importantly, though, participants will likely gain increased awareness of what we can do differently to maximize enterprise excellence through deliberate inclusion.
What is Enterprise Excellence?
Enterprise Excellence is a holistic approach that's aimed at achieving world-class performance across all aspects of the organization.
What might I learn?
A way to engage all in creating Inclusive Excellence. Lessons from the US military and their parallels to the story of Harry Potter. How belt systems and CI teams can destroy inclusive practices. How leadership language invites people to the party. There are three things leaders can do to engage everyone every day: maximizing psychological safety to create environments where folks learn, contribute, and challenge the status quo.
Who might benefit? Anyone and everyone leading folks from the shop floor to top floor.
