This study examined the relationship between patent foramen ovale (PFO) and migraine in a population-based cohort of 1101 stroke-free individuals. The prevalence of PFO was 15% in individuals with self-reported migraine and in those without migraine. PFO was slightly more common in migraine with aura (19%) than without aura (11%), but the sample sizes were too small to make a definitive statement. Risk factors did not affect the relationship between PFO and migraine. The study did not find an association between PFO and self-reported migraine.
