1. Prompting: What is it?
Module 2: Goals of Job Coach – Understanding the Role and how EBPs can help
2. We use the
word “prompt”
all the time –
but what does
this mean in the
world of
employment?
Prompting is…
• Any assistance given that supports
learning or initiates the use of a specific
skill.
• A variety of different techniques that are
used to teach a skillset, or keep an
individual on-task.
• Most effective when used systematically
and in a way that can be faded over
time.
3. Types of
Prompts
Visual: A support that provides information about how to
use the target skills or assists the person in doing the task
Gestural: The use of gestures or movements that cue the
individual to use a particular behavior or skill
Verbal: Using words or phrases to encourage the
targeted behavior or skill
Model: Job coach performs the target skill or behavior
for the individual
Physical: Job coach physically touch the individual to provide
assistance in learning/teaching the targeted behavior or skill
8. On Task Behavior
One of the goals of prompting is to help the individual stay on task - this can
mean a variety of different things depending on the work at hand. ATS uses
the following as a universal definition of ”on task” behavior.
9. Behavioral
Definition:
“On task” is defined by
the individual
completing/participatin
g in activities assigned
by supervisor willingly
and without resistance.
Respond within 15 seconds to a
direction/prompt given
Stay in the required area to complete the work
task
Remain body oriented in the direction of the task
Complete the assigned tasks
Be able to engage in social interaction and
return to the assigned task without prompting
10. Goals of
Prompting
1. Encourages the individual to
engage in on task behavior
2. Effective way to help the
individual learn/master skills
3. Systematic way of creating
independence for the
individual
11. Fading
Prompting is implemented with the intentions of being faded as time
progresses.
Prompting must be systematic. We want to provide the least amount of prompting
necessary so that the individual can remain as independent as possible.
Least-to-most Prompts:
Opportunity to perform each step independently or with the least amount of assistance.
Greater degrees of prompting are provided if the individual is unable to perform the task
correctly.
