The four parathyroid glands are located near the thyroid gland and produce parathyroid hormone which helps regulate calcium levels. They have a distinct smooth surface and are light brown to tan in color. The superior glands are typically located posterior to the thyroid gland near the cricothyroid junction while the inferior glands have more variable positions near the lower thyroid pole or thyroid veins. The parathyroid glands receive their blood supply from either the inferior or superior thyroid arteries, with the inferior glands usually supplied by the inferior thyroid artery and the superior glands having a mix of blood supply from the inferior and superior thyroid arteries.
