WHY IS URBAN-READY OPEN RAN IMPORTANT?
3
– Nick Read, Vodafone CEO in an article for Light Reading
“
We think we'll have a rural open RAN ready for
2021 and we are looking to an urban, which is a
more complex execution, in 2022, but we need
government and we need operators to scale this to
improve functionality and efficiency going forward.”

Challenge: High operational costs of legacy
2/3G deployments combined
with the complexity added by 4/5G needs
Solution: GPP-based base station enables Vodafone to
replace legacy systemswith fully virtualized 2G technology
and run 2G and 4G simultaneously on the same base
station
Network Future-Proofing
Challenge: Cost-effectively meeting rising
customer demands while enabling a smart
migration path to 5G
Solution: Software-defined RRU allows fora pure 4G
implementation,but can be reconfigured without
new hardware to support both 4G/5Gsimultaneously,
and eventually support pure 5G
Delivering Rural Support
Cost-Effectively
Challenge: High costs and complexity for low-
density rural deployments
Solution: Self-optimization across differentRANs in the
network, utilizing available data fromall RAN types
(macros and small cells), plus easier partnership with other
providers

THE BEST HOPE FOR U.S. CHALLENGE TO HUAWEI
19
Cost was the main reason Inland Cellular turned to an Open RAN
network, estimating the technology has cut the price of each cell site
by 40 percent, to about $20,000. That is an important consideration
as telecom companies build 5G systems, which require more cells.
For many years, Inland Cellular used Ericsson equipment in its 3G
network, but it grew frustrated by the expense. When it needed to
upgrade its system or add a new feature, it had to accept
Ericsson’s pricing because it was locked into Ericsson’s proprietary
technology.
The [Open RAN] result was impressive: The equipment transferred
data more efficiently than the network’s other cell sites and synced
well with them.

Editor's Notes

  • #5 First let’s begin with a US view of OpenRAN. For US MNOs their focus has shifted to rapidly expanding 4G and now rolling out 5G into their networks. Supporting 3G connectivity, finding secure supply chains, and racing to have ubiquitous 4G coverage so they can safely migrate to VoLTE is expensive, complex, and deepens the lock in to its vendors without new revenue to support it.   Our Cloud Native OpenRan solutions understand this and implement the key principals of Dev/Ops, Automation, because deploying, maintaining, and optimizing 3G, 4G, and now 5G networks requires a lot of manual labor and carries a high price tag.   OpenRAN doesn’t just provide open interfaces, it is the catalyst for a new lifecycle. It begins with Increasing competition so operators will have more than just 2 or 3 options so that they may deliver coverage and capacity where they need it most at a much lower cost. Next comes a faster pace of innovation due to software-driven development, laying the foundation for new business models that are based on market needs. This new lifecycle allows MNOs to reinvent their networks and their economics in order to deliver differentiated services for capacity and coverage to capture new revenue streams.   Parallel Wireless’s OpenRAN deployments span the Globe and are helping US Operators to address the challenges they face in planning, deploying, and maintaining their networks while reducing their Total Cost of Ownership.
  • #8 Because MNOs face complex and costly deployment and operational challenges in Urban Use Cases, the need for an end to end solution enabling them to overcome their deployment barriers and meet the necessary deployment targets of improving capacity to is critical. Parallel Wireless's cloud native All G architecture allows operators to generate new revenue, improve end user experience, reduce the Total Cost of Ownership, and make the deployment future-proof. A key tenant in supporting dense urban deployments is network orchestration with real-time network SON and interference mitigation using our OpenRAN Controller. This flexibility in deployments allows operators to make on-going maintenance hands-free.
