The link between domain names
and IP addressess
Contents
A domain name is the part of an
address (eg email, website) that
identifies it belongs to a particular
domain (eg company,
organisation)
An IP address (internet Protocol)
is a unique network address.
Everything on the internet has its
own IP address so you can get to
that specific thing
IP addresses and domain names are linked because;
• Every domain name is given its own public IP address. The
domain name is what we see and use (type into google) but the
IP address is what the computer uses to locate and use the
website, for example. (computers work in numbers, addresses in
numbers, IP addresses, not words, domain names)
Like website name (what we use) Computer number (what computer uses)
Data packets
Contents
A data packet is;
• When data has to be transmitted it is broken down into
smaller chunks of data
• These data chunks are called packets
• These packets take whatever route they want through the
internet to meet up with the other data packets to reform the
data at its destination
Data packet switching
Contents
Data packet switching is the process of transmitting data from
one place to another by splitting it into data packet switching.
Data packet
switching diagram
1. Data is split into packets
2. Sending the packets to its
destination by the quickest
route possible
3. Putting the packets back
together to make the
original data at its
destination
The function of routers
Contents
The function of a router;
• Routers give the packets of data the quickest and best routes
to the destination
• It looks at where the data wants to go and directs it there
