The ozone layer protects the Earth from UV radiation by absorbing UV-B rays. It is being depleted by chemicals like CFCs, HCFCs, and other ozone-depleting substances released into the atmosphere by human activities. While volcanoes and oceans release chlorine, the chlorine from natural sources washes out of the atmosphere, unlike the chlorine from industrial chemicals which remains and destroys ozone. International agreements in the late 20th century began regulating and banning ozone-depleting substances to help the ozone layer recover over time.
