productive colleagues

̶ Creates a individual career development plan to meet the
benchmarks
̶ Identifies and works with a mentor
Office of Faculty Affairs & Development
Individual Development Programs

Annual Review
The Dean expects annual reviews for all faculty
Purpose:
• Assess direction in core missions – teaching, scholarship/
professional productivity, academic service and (where applicable)
patient care
• Get feedback on progress to date
• Have realistic conversations about career choices
• Plan for the future/goal setting
Office of Faculty Affairs & Development
Make Annual Review Effective
• Always prepare a personal statement that includes
accomplishments and goals in core areas
• Review your teaching file
̶ Make sure all teaching evaluations are in your file
̶ Review any peer evaluations of teaching
̶ Use your personal statement to address any concerns raised in evaluations
• Invite specific feedback
̶ Is your plan for next year reasonable?
̶ Where should you improve?
̶ What resources do you need to be successful?
̶ Are you “on track” for promotion?
Office of Faculty Affairs & Development
Procedure
• You provide an updated C.V. (APR – Academic and Professional
Record) + personal statement
• Chair/Division Director prepares review, usually in consultation
with senior faculty (committee or all)
• You meet with Chair/Division Director to discuss
• You receive a copy for response (or approve in self service) for
concurrence; it is further reviewed at higher levels
• Reviews are not included in the promotion review process
Office of Faculty Affairs & Development

  1. As an organization we are committed to helping you maintain your personal and professional equilibrium. We also understand that everyone comes to work with many factors that impact their day to day interactions, be it personal health, home issues, children, parents or community. We believe the University of Iowa has a strong commitment to a culture that values well-being. Resources exist to help faculty and staff manage all aspects of overall well-being, so the next few slides highlight a few. Wellbeing is more than physical health. Encompasses many aspects of our lives. From a performance perspective, when supervisor receive high ratings from performance reviews, there is also a correlation to a higher individual well-being score. It is a direct relationship. Good performance at work and good health and well-being go hand in hand. The data in the footer is from the liveWELL Personal Health Assessment survey. The Gallup “thriving” category is linked to: Fewer health problems and sick days Less worry and stress More happiness and interest 2x more likely to be engaged at work Feel have opportunities to do best work every day
