The Outernet is a global networking project that aims to provide free access to internet data through WiFi available worldwide. It works to bridge the global digital divide, as less than 40% of people currently have internet access. Outernet will use a constellation of low-cost miniature satellites and existing infrastructure to broadcast data packets containing news, information, educational content, and more. The goal is to make a basic level of digital content accessible to all humanity by delivering it directly to mobile devices via satellite. The project is led by the Media Development Investment Fund and aims to launch initial demonstration satellites in 2015.
