Otto von Bismarck was born in 1815 in Prussia to a Junker family. He studied law and entered politics in 1847 as an ultraconservative champion of Junker interests. As the first Chancellor of Germany, he recognized opportunities for national unification and worked to provide a Prussian structure to the new nation. Though initially opposed to democracy and liberalism, he created a new nation with progressive social policies and kept Europe peaceful in the late 19th century through balance of power diplomacy.
