Hitler saw the Spanish Civil War as an opportunity to fight against Communism and test his armed forces. He supported the right-wing nationalist forces under General Franco, while Stalin supported the Republican government. Germany sent the Condor Legion to Spain, where the Luftwaffe practiced devastating bombing raids on civilian populations, such as the destruction of Guernica. After over 30 months of fighting that cost 250,000 lives, the nationalists emerged victorious, allowing Franco to establish an authoritarian regime in Spain. Before jumping to the end of the Nazi regime in 1945 and the formation of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1949, I do want to provide a very brief historical overview of the Nazis' aggressive foreign policy before and during World War II.
After Hitler had secured his dictatorship through the Röhm-Putsch in 1934, he made no secret of his overall intentions to increase Germany's military power. He violated the Treaty of Versailles by introducing military conscription in 1935 and began to expand the German Wehrmacht into a huge army (in part through conscription, in part by dissolving the SA into the Wehrmacht). In 1936, German troops occupied the demilitarized zone of the Rhineland, while, at the same time, providing military support for General Franco, who became dictator of Spain the same year. Two years later, in 1938, Germany marched into Austria and proclaimed theAnschluss (union) of the two countries. In September of that year, the British Prime Minister Chamberlain appeased Hitler at an international conference in Munich, after which Hitler immediately occupied first theSudentenland (the German-heritage region of Czechoslovakia) and, half a year later, the remaining Czech lands, naming them the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. Although France and Great Britain still did not engage the Nazis at that time, they publicly vowed to defend Poland should Hitler dare to invade it as well. Although Hitler continued to assert his peaceful intentions, everybody who had followed his political career or was even vaguely familiar with Mein Kampf knew that war was inevitable. This is precisely what happened on September 1, 1939: Hitler invaded Poland. In response, France and Great Britain declared war against Germany.

On February 27, 1933, the German parliament (Reichstag) building burned down. The Nazi leadership and its coalition partners used the fire to claim that Communists were planning a violent uprising. They claimed that emergency legislation was needed to prevent this. The resulting act, commonly known as the Reichstag Fire Decree, abolished a number of constitutional protections and paved the way for Nazi dictatorship.

Following Hitler’s appointment as chancellor the Nazis were finally in a position of power.
However, this power was limited, as the Nazis were just one party in a three party coalition government, under President Hindenburg.
This topic will explore how the Nazis managed to eliminate their opposition and consolidate ultimate power over Germany, whilst maintaining an illusion of democracy.
It will first explore this topic in chronological order, from the Reichstag Fire through to the death of President Hindenburg, and then explore it thematically in the last section. On the 31 January 1933, Hitler, conscious of his lack of a majority in the Reichstag, immediately called for new elections to try and strengthen his position. The Nazis aimed to increase their share of the vote so that they would have a majority in the Reichstag. This would allow them to rule unopposed and unhindered by coalition governments.
Over the next two months, they launched themselves into an intense election campaign.
On 27 February 1933, as the campaign moved into its final, frantic days, the Reichstag, the German Parliament building, was set on fire and burnt down. An atmosphere of panic and terror followed the event.
This continued when a young Dutch communist, Van der Lubbe was arrested for the crime.
The Nazi Party used the atmosphere of panic to their advantage, encouraging anti-communism. Göring declared that the communists had planned a national uprising to overthrow the Weimar Republic. This hysteria helped to turn the public against the communists, one of the Nazis main opponents, and 4000 people were imprisoned.
The day after the fire, Hindenburg signed the Emergency Decree for the Protection of the German People. On the 28 February 1933, President Hindenburg signed the Emergency Decree for the Protection of the German People. This decree suspended the democratic aspects of the Weimar Republic and declared a state of emergency.
This decree gave the Nazis a legal basis for the persecution and oppression of any opponents, who were be framed as traitors to the republic. People could be imprisoned for any or no reason.
The decree also removed basic personal freedoms, such as the freedom of speech, the right to own property, and the right to trial before imprisonment.
Through these aspects the Nazis suppressed any opposition to their power, and were able to start the road from democracy to a dictatorship. The atmosphere of uncertainty following the Reichstag Fire secured many voters for the Nazi party.
The SA also ran a violent campaign of terror against any and all opponents of the Nazi regime. Many were terrified of voting of at all, and many turned to voting for the Nazi Party out of fear for their own safety. The elections were neither free or fair.
On the 5 March 1933, the elections took place, with an extremely high turnout of 89%.
The Nazis secured 43.9% of the vote.

Hitler was not immediately appointed chancellor after the success of the July 1932 elections, despite being leader of the largest party in the Reichstag. Hitler was sworn in as the chancellor of Germany on the 30 January 1933. The Nazis were now in power.

On 20 December 1924, having served only nine months, Hitler was released. Once released, Hitler redirected his focus towards obtaining power through legal means rather than by revolution or force, and accordingly changed his tactics, further developing Nazi propaganda.

Also, the League's organisation was a muddle, so when there was a crisis, no-one could agree.
SUCCESSES OF THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS. The League quickly proved its value by settling the Swedish-Finnish dispute over the Åland Islands (1920–21), guaranteeing the security of Albania (1921), rescuing Austria from economic disaster, settling the division of Upper Silesia (1922), and preventing the outbreak of war in the Balkans between Greece and Bulgaria.

HITLER’S INVOLVEMENT IN SPAIN
His early successes seemed to give Hitler confidence.
In 1936 the civil war broke out in Spain between Communists, who
were supporters of the Republican government, and right-wing rebels
under General Franco.
Hitler saw this as an opportunity to fight against Communism.
Hitler also tried his armed forces in 1937, ordering devastating
bombing raids on civilian populations in different Spanish cities.
Some of the most prepared units were sent to Spain, such as the
famous Condor Legion and Kriegsmarine.
The destruction of Guernica was terrible.
The world looked on in horror.

SPAIN’S POLITICAL FACTIONS
Hitler, together with Mussolini, decide to support his fellow fascist
Franco, while Stalin supported the Republicans.
The Popular Front was a mixture of different factions (anarchists,
socialists, communists, syndicalist).
Franco’s right wing alliance included the Falange, Spain’s fascist party,
founded in 1933.

WHAT HAPPENED?
The Spanish Civil War became a battleground for two main rival
ideologies (left and right) and thousands of volunteers flocked to Spain
in order to check the spread of fascism.
After more than 30 months of struggle, in which at least 250,000
people lost their lives, the Nationalists emerged victorious and Franco
established a fascist-style government.

What Hitler hoped to achieve What Hitler achieved
If Franco was successful then Spain would become
a German ally. This would provide a hostile
presence on France’s South-Western border. Hitler
hoped that this move would provide Spanish naval
bases for the German navy.
Failure! Following the surrender of Madrid to the
Nationalists in March 1939, Spain failed to
become an ally of the fellow fascist states
(Germany and Italy) and instead opted for
neutrality during the Second World War, allowing
Franco to concentrate on Spain’s domestic
problems.
Germany’s armed forces, especially Luftwaffe,
could be tested in a kind of “dress rehearsal” for a
full-scale war in Europe
Success! The Luftwaffe was able to practise and
perfect dive-bombing techniques in the ruthless
assault on Guernica in the Basque region of Spain.

What Hitler hoped to achieve What Hitler achieved
Since Mussolini was joining Hitler in assisting
Franco, Hitler hoped that this joint action might
provide the occasion to detach the Italian leader
from his association with Britain and France and
draw him into an alliance with Germany.
Success! Hitler succeeded in persuading Mussolini
to abandon Britain and France. While still not a
formal ally, Mussolini made it clear in a speech in
November 1936, that Germany and Italy now
formed an “axis”, the “Rome-Berlin Axis”. This
represented an important staging post on the road
to a formal alliance.
Hitler hoped that a long drawn-out civil war in
Spain would distract Western diplomats and
officials from the affairs of central Europe. Spain
could, therefore, act as a smokescreen for Hitler’s
attentions elsewhere.
Success! To a large extent this happened, as the
Spanish Civil War lasted for the best part of three
years. During this time Hitler was able to take
successful action over Austria and Czechoslovakia
in Central Europe.
