The Nature And Role Of Law In Democracy
The nature and role of law is important to political theory because the use of law raises important
questions about oppression versus liberation and morality. Law in a democracy in relation to the
citizens that it governs should strive not to oppress, but rather to liberate and assist citizens when
in conflict with higher officials or fellow citizens. Laws in a democracy should be held with the
intent of safeguarding the public and promoting the common good. John Stuart Mill makes a valid
point when he says: The only purpose for which power can rightfully be exercised over any
member of a civilized community against his will is to prevent harm to others.
In addition to this, there is a fine line between the law and morality, as not every citizen shares the
same moral values. Law is able to be more finite, as it has a written set of rules that citizens should
strive to follow. However, morality is more subjective, as it weighs the right and wrong in given
situations.
The rule of law simply states that the law should be the overarching guideline. The rule of law
provides a framework that both citizens and government officials should follow. John Locke
stated that the rule of law provided protection from every other member of society, as indeed they
are from him. The rule of law allows for the right to life, liberty, and property so long as harm is
not taken to other citizens. In addition, the rule of law protects individuals from the state and
ensures that government is

Navajo Culture Research Paper
Across America, countless tribes and cultures have been practiced for centuries. There is so
much diversity amongst these people ranging from the north eastern Iroquois to the south
western Hopi people. Even though these people live in such different lifestyles, many of the
indigenous tribes have similar perspectives on the world, especially after western expansion
during the 1800 s. Tribes, no matter where they are geographically, all have some sort of
tradition or ritual that they do which can be for spirits, new and old, or for the people themselves.
Three individual indigenous people who are some of the more well known in modern day
standards are the Hopi, Navajo, and Lakota people. All of whom live in different locations across
North America.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Similar to the Navajo, the Lakota are a matriarchal society. The Lakota people practice similar
traditions to the Navajo in that direction matters. Whether is be East or West the direction is
important to their religion the same way east is important to the Navajo s belief of the rising
sun. To the Lakota people directions have a unique color associated with it and certain
characteristics as well. North is white and is portrayed as cold, South is yellow and known for
its full days, East is red for its sunrise, and West is black as that is where the sky becomes dark.
However, there are two additional directions, up and down, up is blue because of the sky, and
down is green because of the earth. This is the backbone of the Lakota people. Another tradition
in which the Lakota people are unique to is the Sun Dance. During the hottest day of the year,
men, and men only, pierce their chest with a hook tied to a rope and connect to a pole to dance.
This is done as a vision quest for the individual dancing as they do so until they collapse or the day
is done. One last tradition that both Hopi and Navajo people can relate to are sweat lodges.
However, in Lakota people they are referred to as Rock Lodges or Inipi. The reason for this is
because it is for their ancestors (the rocks) who are being focused on, not the individuals within.
The rock lodge is seen as the womb of the earth. This is why

Down Syndrome As A Cognitive Disorder Essay
Down syndrome as a cognitive disorder
Down syndrome (DS) is relatively well known as a genetic disorder to the general public and
children with this syndrome form one of the most readily identifiable groups of children with
moderate to severe learning difficulties. It has been over 130 years since Langdon Down first
described DS and 30 years since the presence of the defining extra copy of chromosome 21 was
identified by Lejeune and his team of
French geneticists. Delay in the development of cognitive capacities is a primary consequence of
Down syndrome. Despite such cognitive delay, however, young children with Down syndrome can
be empathic, affectionate and engaging (Wishart Pitcairn, 2000).
What is Down Syndrome Down syndrome is a chromosomal disorder that is typically caused when
a baby is conceived with 47 chromosomes instead of the normal 46. Starting in the womb, this
additional genetic material alters the course of the child s development. The most common form of
Down syndrome, Trisomy 21, occurs when a child is born with a full three copies of the 21st
chromosome, rather than the normal two. In rare cases, Down syndrome is caused by other
chromosomal arrangements.
Children with Down syndrome typically have intellectual disabilities, hypotonia (low muscle tone)
and characteristic facial features, such as upward slanted eyes and a flattened nasal bridge. Except

Examples Of Character Changes In Remember The Titans
Describe how a character changes in the film Remember the Titans Explain why this change occurs.
In the film Remember the titans which was directed by Boaz Yakin. I thought that Julius had
changed the most during the film and these changes occurred in these three points. One point is
how Julius was a very strong an opinionated person. The second point is Julius and Gerry finally
confronted each other about getting along and the last point is how coach Boone pushed Julius and
Gerry to share the captaincy roles to work hard together for the team to follow in example.
Julius was a very opinionated person, who was all about himself and not looking after his own
team or anyone else for that matter. For example when Julius was confronted by Gerry, during this
conversation Julius said I m supposed to wear out myself for this team? What team? Nope that s
not what I m going to do is I m going to look after myself. When this confrontation was happening
there were many close up camera shots, this was because the director wanted to show the emotion
and anger in the faces of Gerry and Julius. This shows that Julius is a very opinionated person and
he only cares about himself, this is shown in what he told Julius.

True Lies
One can argue that the veracity of autobiographies, by nature, is extremely deceptive. The vast
majority of the facts contained within them are colored, quite naturally, by the perceptions and
interpretations of the author. The tendency to take liberty with the truth is often exacerbated when
the author of such works has an affinity (or perhaps gift) for the written language, such as is the
case with both Ernest Hemingway and Gertrude Stein, who produced fairly unconventional
autobiographical works entitled A Moveable Feast and The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas,
respectively. The proclivity to glorify one s own actions and deeds in effect to make oneself appear
cool is often an irresistible temptation, especially for those writing about people (including
themselves) whom posterity admires, such as the lost generation of expatriate American writers
living in Paris in the early part of the 20th century. In light of that fact, it is interesting to note that
both Hemingway and Stein create an image of their

Comparison Of Aldous Huxley s Nineteen Eighty-Four
George Orwell also took influence from authors who were active in his own lifetime, such as
English author Aldous Huxley. Orwell s novel Nineteen Eighty Four most commonly gets
compared to Aldous Huxley s novel Brave New World, which was originally published in 1932,
seventeen years before Orwell published his own anti totalitarian work. Comparable to Nineteen
Eighty Four, Brave New Worldis a dystopian novel in which a political agenda is discussed via a
fabricated government. However, while similarities can be drawn, the two differ in their content.
In Brave New World, Huxley s fictional society is controlled by drugs and efforts to distract its
citizens who are immersed in a world of technology that could only have been dreamed of at the...

In the same fashion that he took influence from the writings of other authors before him, authors
in the generations after him have done the same. Margaret Atwood, whose novel The Handmaid
s Tale (1985) has sparked political interest in its recent resurgence much as Orwell s works have,
was inspired by Orwell s ideologies, mainly those represented in Animal Farm. As previously
mentioned, Orwell is no novice at creating dystopian societies, a skill that Atwood, too, shows in
The Handmaid s Tale, the plot of which centers around the handmaids (women) being used
strictly for reproductive purposes. The more substantial influence, however, is the use of satire
in literature. In Animal Farm, Orwell created a politically satirical society of animals meant to
represent the regime under Joseph Stalin, whom he opposed. In The Handmaid s Tale, however,
Atwood used satire for social justices rather than a political agenda, though the two often
coincide. Atwood takes a dystopian view of a world in which women are used as objects to keep
the population alive and uses it to make readers understand why feminism is needed; if women
are not allowed to choose what they are able to do with their bodies, be it abortion or birth control,
they will soon only be seen as a means of

Essay about Architect of the Modern Age
Frank Gehry is a world renowned architect known for several important buildings such as the
Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and the Walt Disney Concert Hall. He was born in Toronto Canada
February 28, 1929 but moved with his family to Los Angeles, California in 1947(1). Gehry
attended the University of Southern California and graduated in 1954 with a degree in architecture

have an orthogonal plan and have the exterior limestone walls and the other nine galleries are

square meters which now houses the largest sculpture commission in history, Richard Serra s The
Matter of Time. The creation of this construction was made possible by the use of the
technologically advanced 3D design computer program called Catia (5). This program significantly
assisted Gehry in modeling the Guggenheim so that he would not have any future problems in
construction. Critics of the Guggenheim feel that although the museum is iconic it fails as a public
place because it does not reflect and support the civilization, culture and finances of Bilbao (6).
Nevertheless, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is the zenith of Gehry s architectural career. Another
masterpiece of Gehry is the Walt Disney Concert Halllocated in Los Angeles. It is located on a
historically (Bunker Hill) and culturally prominent downtown site adjoining the existing Music
Center of Los Angeles (7). It all started in 1987 when the late Lillian Disney, wife of the late Walt
Disney, made an initial contribution of $50 million to build a first class performance venue as a
gift to the people of Los Angeles and as homage to Walt Disney s zeal to the arts (8). Over time

Why I Was Surprised When Octavie Was Still Alive
I was very surprised with the end to The Locket. In no way did I think that Edmond was still

when I read that he had past, and the locket was returned to Octavie I was shocked. Made
precious as material things sometimes are by being forever identified with a significant moment
of one s existence. This quote is very sad because Octavie is remembering what she had with
Edmond and the fact that she will have to go through life with just memories of their time

Catcher In The Rye Murders
The Catcher in the Rye has been linked to many murder cases throughout it s time. Mark David
Chapman, who had an obsession with the book, murdered John Lennon. Also, John Hinckley,
who attempted to assassinate our former president, Ronald Reagan, was thought to be obsessed
with the book as well. There are many other people whose murders or attempted murders are
thought to be connected to The Catcher in the Rye, such as Lee Harvey Oswald s assassination
on John F. Kennedy, and Robert John Bardo , the man who killed Rebecca Schaeffer.. Holden

alcohol. At Ernie s night club he got served alcohol even though he was a minor. He even got

were known to do as well. Holden also grew up lonely. He lost motivation to do well in school,
which got him kicked out of Quincy High, losing his friends. His brother is also dead which
may contribute to his feeling of loneliness. Holden always fantasizes about saving all the
children from growing up, being their Catcher in the Rye . If somebody were to get in the way
of his fantasy, he might have killed them. Holden is also socially awkward, loving children but
hating adults, calling them phonies . He only has a few friends throughout the novel. He gets

whom he still has feelings for. This made him leave Quincy three days early while he travelled to

Rock And Roll In The 1950s
1950 s
Introduction
The 1950s was largely dominated by Rock and Roll as the Rock and Roll era had emerged. This
Genre of music developed from other styles of music such as country, Jazz, and gospel.
One Reason for the sudden emergence of Rock and Roll was because of the likes of Elvis Presley,
Chuck Berry, Fats Domino and other Rock and Roll icons that have transformed music, as we know
it.
Pioneer of Rock and Roll
During the early 50s, many artists were coming out with there own Rock and Roll songs making
it difficult for us to identify who was the pioneer of Rock and Roll. Today most people think of
Elvis Presley when they hear Rock and Roll however the very first Rock and Roll hit was called
Rock around the Clock by Bill Haley and his Comets. This song released in 1955 was considered
to be the first international hit that spread to millions across the globe, but it wasn t the first Rock
song written. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Rock around the Clock grabbed a larger audience. What made it an international hit is what makes
most rock songs today a hit. A mix of different instruments such as the saxophone, drums and the
guitar, and although the lyrics are repetitive, it s almost like they become hypnotic to the listener.
Culture Although its true that Rock and Roll was developed from other styles of music but it
was actually the mix of Black culture and white spreading that truly advanced it. As Black artists
and bands like the Dominoes began to combine gospel music and add more aggressive rhymes to
them creating rock and roll. After these song began reaching a wider audience being the White
teens who enjoyed this type of thrilling music. After this type of music spread Rock and roll was
now based around the image of Elvis

this work. Marriage is supposed to be one of the most beautiful things and to have someone go
out and look for satisfaction with someone else is very ugly. The divorce rate per 1000 women is

Literary Devices In The Jabberwocky And The Lorax
The two stories The Jabberwocky and The Lorax, are both similar in the sense the authors use
nonsensical words and other literary devices to enhance parts of their stories. Why do the authors
do these things and how do they affect the story. One thing the two stories have in common is the
way the word usage affects the story. In both The Jabberwockyand the Lorax, they use words to
help the reader depict what is happening. One example from the Lorax would be, I am the Lorax,
he coughed and he whiffed He sneezed and he snuffed, (Seuss ln. 10 11). In this quote he uses
words such as whiffed and snuffled to show the reader that he is having a hard time breathing. This

In both stories they use figurative language to help the reader understand some details. One
example of this in the Lorax is when, the Lorax talks to the oncles about the waste his is making
from hsi machines. In the text it says, What s more, snapped the Lorax. (His dander was up.) Let
me say a few words about Gluppity Glup, (Seuss ln. 21 22). In this quote the author uses the
word gluppity glup. This word is an example of alliteration. This word also has kind of a dirty
and icky feel to it. This may inform the reader that this stuff is not good and that it is bad and
dirty. One example in the Jabberwocky of the author using sound devices is when the protagonist
battles the Jabberwock. In the text it states, The vorpal blade went snicker snack, (Carroll ln. 18).
This is not only an example of alliteration, but also onomatopoeia. The reader can assume that
snicker snack is the sound of the blade hitting something. This indicates that the sword is hitting the
Jabberwock and that he is probably killing it. This is how the authors use figurative language and
sound devices in their

This can show a certain way of wanting to assimilate to something that already exists, which
Anzaldua would argue with. Anzaldua believes in women having their own voice, she is not
looking to fit in the world of the white writers society accepts, she is looking for others to accept
her own writing and accept the community she belongs to with the characteristics she identifies
with. It all differs in the way they act and how radical they want their effects to be. Analyzing
Anzaldua s letter, one would agree with the fact that her feeling of need is one more revolutionary
that echoes that of the Young Lords. She invites the mujeres de color, companions in writing
(Anzaldua 165), to find the real voice within them and to show it, not to work through what
already exists but to create a new category where they can all identify. Anzaldua invites her
compaГ±eras to not feel oppressed by those that are accepted by society, to not let their own
expectations condition them (166). The way Anzaldua fights and argues on what she deserves, is

College Tuition Benefit Analysis
Imagine somebody having just graduated from high school, and they are trying to get into a

imagine, but for others that is the life that they are living right now. According to the College
Board of Education tuition has increased by 8.6% since 2012, meanwhile average household
incomes have only increased by 2.23%. The following tuition increase trend is becoming a
serious threat to American society, and must be slowed down. At this rate families will soon have
no hope of ever paying for college debt. Many people want to blame the government to

The Importance Of The Anthropocene And How It Is Affecting...
In this paper, I will explain what is the Anthropocene and how it is affecting the mortality of
trees. Tree especially forest can be wiped out in two way, abiotic and biotic. Abiotic means of
death are naturally accruing events that trees experience and with given time build resilience
to, but with the help of man these events have become more reoccurring and much more
extreme. Climate change is a great factor in the increase of tree mortality, with the rise in global
temperature and the increase in extreme weather from the intense burning of fossil fuels. Biotic
means that affect the mortality of trees are starvation due to lack of light, water and sometimes
lack of Carbon dioxide. There are also diseases, insects and direct biotic means such as
deforestation, all will be discussed at some point in this paper. Introduction: The very existence
of carbon life form here on Earth started because of trees, and life will only continue to exist
through tree mortality. If trees continue to die at an alarming rate, then human life will end shortly
thereafter. Climate change is one of the major factors in tree deaths today, with global warming
being responsible for the higher air temperatures, which in turn causes the land to experience extra
drying form drought conditions. Extreme weather is also a cause of tree death, events like super
storm Sandy and hurricane Katrina, that flooded parts of New York and Louisiana for days.

The Role Of Women In The Great Gatsby
Over time, the views that society has of women has changed. Women are now viewed as having a
different purpose in life compared to during the 1900 s, they are able to work and do tasks other
than being a homemaker. Women have more choices now than they did in the 1900 s. The women
in My ГЃntonia and the women in The Great Gatsbyhave minimal choices about what they do in
life.
In The Great Gatsby, one of the main characters, Daisy, is presented with very little choicewith
what she can do with her life. Very early in the book, it is revealed that Tom, Daisy s husband is
cheating on her with another woman. Why she said hesitantly, Tom s got some woman in New
York. Got some woman? I repeated blankly. Miss Baker nodded. (Fitzgerald, 15). At this moment
in time, it is revealed that Tom is cheating on Daisy. Now, Daisy is left with three choices. She
could flirt with other men, continue to fight with Tom, or to leave Tom. Although she has three
choices, there is really only one viable option to stay with Tom. Continuing to fight or flirting
with other men would distract from the reality of the situation. However, she is scared to leave
Tom because of the consequences. If she were to leave him, she would have no money and she
would lose all of her friends. In addition, her child wouldn t have a father anymore. As a result,
she would be judged by her peers because of her economic status, and her new lifestyle without
Tom. She was also afraid of Tom and his abilities to

Video Game Violence And Violent Video Games
Abstract The issue of video game violence seems to be a hot topic right now after several
shootings have occurred and made a connection to the shooters being video gamers. In looking at
past research it is apparent that there seems to large amounts of research that contradict one work
to another. Although I would have been interested in conducting a poll of the publics opinion
regarding the use of violent video games and their connection to mass shootings I was not able to
conduct the research. However, for this paper I chose to conduct a literature analysis to see what
research has been conducted and to seek out gaps and themes in this research.
Introduction
After the elementary school shooting of Sandy Hook in 2012 this issue of violent video games
became a hot issue calling for a connection of violence to video games. However, the final
investigative report suggested that he was more a fan of nonviolent games (Ferguson, 2015). Video
game violence is an issue that continues to be studied due to the inability to come to a general
conclusion on whether or not the games provoke violence in connection to mass shootings. With
shootings occurring and receiving mass coverage the media and public often seek a person/item
to place the blame on. After the tragic events that left people dead or injured one of the topics that
emerged was that of video games affects/effects on the person. Over 85% of games contain some
violence, and approximately half of video games include

The Years 1918-1939, Which Separate World War I From World
The years 1918 1939, which separate World War I from World War II, witnessed profound changes
in how technologically advanced military organizations would fight. In most of the cases, during
peacetime, military innovation, and technological developments played an empowering or helping
role in advancing profoundly new and more operative ways of fighting. In a narrow and strict
sense, such innovative improvements were revolutionary. The technological revolution reached the
battlefields and forever changed the way that armies required from the fragile airplanes and
unreliable tanks of World War Ito evolve into more sophisticated weapons by the late 1930s.

One of the lessons learned after the first world conflict is the necessity of using the third
dimension on military operations. That assumption has been conceptualizing by theorist through
doctrine and implements differently from one country to another. The doctrine concerning air
force warfare was a direct influence of World War I as a revolution on this domain. The challenge
of many military theorists concerned the emergence of the aircraft as a weapon and the adaptation
of this emerging capability on military operations. One of the Airpower advocates Giulio Douhet
consider the airpower as a tool to use to avoid trench warfare and dramatically shorten wars. Thus,

There are numerous accounts of actions by Roosevelt and his top armed forces advisors, which
reveal they were not only aware of an attack by Japan, but also they were planning on it, and
instigating that attack.
Roosevelt had wanted to enter the war for a long time. He believed Hitler would not declare war
on the United States unless he thought they were beatable. Also, the United States public opinion
was against going to war due to the stable and booming economy. Most of American society
before the Pearl Harbor attack also believed in the idea of isolationism. Americans didn t want to
get into the European war if they didn t have to. The only way in which Roosevelt could obtain
support from the American people to enter the war was that a member of the Axis Power needed to
make the first move. In other words, the Americans would need something to revenge from.
To get the Japanese to attack, Roosevelt would need to provoke Japan. Lieutenant Commander
Arthur H. McCollum provided him with a detailed, eight step procedure for making Japan to make
the first overt move into war. The United States government made an arrangement with Britain for
the use of British bases in the Pacific, particularly Singapore. They cooperated with Holland for

Analysis Of The Dayton Accords
As Bill Clinton spoke at the University of Dayton for the Peace Accords 20th Anniversary, he
said, There s still a lot of work to do to reap the full promise of Dayton... Still for too many people
they believe every tomorrow will be like yesterday. Clinton, the president at the time of the Dayton
Accords, has never defined what this promise was and therein lies some of the problem. The overall
vagueness of this statement and the ambiguous goals of Dayton makes it difficult to determine just
how successful this solution has been. The Bosnian conflict, which lasted from 1992 to 1995,
stemmed from the fact that three groups refused to coexist with one another. Following these years

Many have been quick to critique this legislation as it does not provide Bosnia with operative
governance and hindered unity within this nation. However, the Dayton Peace Accords cannot be
looked at as a complete failure. As former journalist Adijata Ziga Borovac put it, The main
objective of the accords was to end the war... The disbanding of former Yugoslavia acted as a
catalyst for increased amounts in nationalism amongst the groups involved in the Bosnian
Conflict. As tensions between the three groups arose, an all out war started, leaving this country
in a state of decay. Without the Dayton Accords, it is hard to say whether Bosnia could have
survived at all. Dayton provided Bosnia with a provisional piece of legislation that granted peace

its primary objective, to end a war. The accords, which have become more permanent than
temporary, are highly criticized, but it is worth remembering that the relative peace of the Balkans

The Struggle For Equality For Women In The 19th And 20th...
During the 19th and 20th century, the suffragette groups used various militant and peaceful
methods and tactics to achieve equality for women. These actions are clear inspirations in
modern Australian feminism and society. 19th and 20th century Britain was a patriarchal society
where women were perceived as second class citizens, not given many rights and additionally
unequal to males despite their level of education, role and requirement to pay taxes. Society
perceived women as child bearers and the property of males. They had no educational
opportunities in academic fields such as law and science, unequal wage, limited economic rights
under the Unito Caro law and additionally, were subject to violence and poor health rights. This
resulted in the grievance amongst the women, and officially led to the struggle for equality before
the law and society. During the struggle, three main women s suffrage groups were established; The
National Union Of Women s Suffrage Societies (NUWSS), The
Women s Social And Political Union (WSPU) and The Women s Freedom League
(WFL). The groups common aim was to achieve the right to vote as they believed through this, they
will be able to achieve other rights as their political input and involvement will be taken into account
and not ridiculed due to their gender. A range of militant, peaceful and democratic methods and
tactics were adopted to differentiate the groups and many of them are clear in modern Australian
feminism through the

Existential Crisis In Hamlet
In Shakespeare s Hamlet, we are presented with a young man torn asunder after the sudden
demise of his father. There is a point in the play where Hamlet vocalizes his feelings of
displacement and loss within his world. The To be, or not to be monologue plunges the
audience into the confused psyche of Hamlet, allowing us to empathize with Hamlet s
existential crisis. This window into Hamlet s dilemma strikes the audience, it is relatable in that
we all face moments in our lives where we stand back and question our socially and self imposed
roles. The ramblings of Hamlet echo through history, and those same sentiments can be felt to
this day. The true comparison lies in how we handle these tribulations. Kafka, Franz, and
Joachim Neugroschel. The Passenger. The Metamorphosis, in the Penal Colony, and Other
Stories: With Two New Stories. 1st Scribner pbk. fiction ed., New York, Simon Schuster, 2000,
pp. 40 41. In Kafka s The Passenger we are presented with an allegorical story about a person on
a trolley car, watching as life passes. In the introduction I stand on the platform of the trolley car
and am completely insecure about my footing in this world in this city, in my family. Nor could
I indicate even casually what demands I might rightfully make in any direction... we have the
entire basis of this short story. Kafka puts to words the feelings of his and his generation,
feelings of being out of place in a rapidly changing world. Shakespeare and Kafka both abided in
time periods that we re seeing social changes occurring. Shakespeare may have used Hamlet to
vocalize his feelings about being out of place in his world. Kafka used his short story The
Passenger to put to words his feelings of displacement and unfamiliarity with the world around
him. Hamlet s To be, or not to be monologue and Kafka s The Passenger show similar feelings of
confusion and disassociation from their specific worlds. Hamlet debates life and death, action vs
inaction, suffering, an inability to choose a direction; Kafka skips the debate and delves directly to
the heart of the issue, a complete insecurity with no direction in the world. Munch, Edvard. Evening

They are subject to a higher chance of contracting certain diseases, being the victims of
economic, educational and emotional disparities more than any other American population as
well. Black women are also stereotyped for being loud mouthed, hypersexualized, cantankerous,
having many children, hopelessly single and being stubborn and overly independent in today s
society. Significance: Black women are easily considered one of the most severely marginalized
groups in the United States because not only did they have to combat being enslaved which
encoded a heavy deal of oppression on its own they also had to fight the term Jezebel which was
a way of creating a huge gap between white women and black women. This placed Black enslaved
women at the absolute bottom of food chain. A woman which then, naturally defaulted to one of
European descent was considered to lie somewhere on the spectrum having more authority than a
child but not nearly as much as a man. The black woman was so far removed that she was

saying that become popularized in the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale

Officials in Haiti estimate that an overwhelming 90,000 to 120,000 children are currently forced
into this practice, reflecting greatly on the lack of economic stability and growth within the country
(2005 Trafficking in Persons Report). When thinking of sexual exploitation, forced prostitution and
rape are often the first to come to mind; however, women of Haiti have been noted to consciously
choose to exploit themselves. Furthermore, women will trade sex for a goods, shelter, or even
security, in turn causing sex to be classified as an income generating strategy (Kempadoo, 84).
According to a statistic pulled in 1984, 30 percent of the prostitutes from Haiti or from the
Dominican Republic were between fifteen and twenty years old (Benoit, 39). Consequently, the
numbers of individuals affected by trafficking in Haiti is evident of the presence and nature of
crisis occurring.
Haiti is extremely susceptible to the humanitarian crisis of human trafficking due to their unstable
government, lack of law enforcement, and static economy. Although Jean Bertrand Aristide held the
position of president, the society still suffered from brutal acts of violence. Due to the fear of being
overthrown, the military acted in this way to divest the Haitian people of their freedoms (Americas
Watch, 1). However, subsequent to Aristide s resignation in early 2004, Haiti continued to struggle

The Dynamics of Brice Family

Presenting Problems Overall, the Brice family has some clear issues that are causing stress for
everyone, including their adolescent daughter Claudia. The family did not believe in the power
of family therapy, yet they had little places to turn to in response to Claudia s growing anger
problems. They had tried therapy before, but to no avail. We are introduced to their problems both
from a description of the anger between each other and their own explanations of what is going on.
Their son Don is absent, both literally and figuratively, showing how he tends to avoid the overall
family struggles. Claudia s role in the family dynamic was described early on by her mother, yet
this explanation was done in a very isolating way for Claudia. Her mother explained her strange
ideas, but that only invoked a strong and angry reaction from Claudia herself. In fact, the two
seemed to feed off one another in terms of their anger. It is clear that the main issues were a
discrepancy between what Claudia wanted her life to be like and the heightened rules and
expectations her family was imposing on her. Mother and daughter continuously engaged in
fighting, clearly not seeing each others point of view, but too caught up in their own emotional
reactions regarding the situation. The fact that Don wasn t present just put more highlight on
Claudia, and showed how the family viewed her as the problem, not taking responsibility for it
themselves. This was felt by

that Bonheur spent there. It s a straightforward composition, with the white horse trotting on a
somewhat dusty path towards the viewer, slightly at an angle and meeting our gaze, while Cody
glances to one side as if enacting the tracker he once was (see Fig. 7). The background is filled
with some nondescript shrubs and trees, ubiquitous to many picturesque locations of the world,
accompanying a rather calm blue sky. Fig. 7 Rosa Bonheur, Col. William F. Cody (Buffalo
Bill), 1889. The equestrian portrait of Buffalo Bill became an American icon. Buffalo Bill was a
metaphor for all that America stood for and it s no surprise Bonheur was drawn to the man,
perhaps seeing him as a beacon of hope on horseback of a symbolic white steed. Being a forward
thinking womanshe identified America with the liberation of women and a progressive attitude that

Her realistic depictions of animals elevated their status as subject matter on a grandiose scale of
history painting. Sympathetic to their cause, and clearly identifying with them on a personal level,
Bonheur was successful in portraying their significance by visualizing their importance within the
narrative of humankind. At a time when a woman painter was not typically elevated to equal status
of men in power, she as an artist retained the faculty of seeing and depicting, and therefore

Love Medicine Essay
Love Medicine Since the beginning of colonization of America, there has been the problem of
dealing with the indigenous people of the land. After the first attempts in eradicating the population,
the American government changed its policy to integration. It is this integration into white society
and the severance from the
Indian culture that causes disenfranchisement in the modern Indian reservation.
In Louise Erdrich s Love Medicine, the contradictory efforts to isolate the Native
Americans on reservations and to make regular Americans of them are seen over roughly a fifty
year period. The Morrisseys, Kashpaws, Lamartines,
Lazarres and others must define their relations to alien religions, customs, economic realities, and ...

Lipsha also grows up without knowing of his ancestry and therefore feels incomplete. Added to the
stress of this, Lipsha also feels detached from the white society by having the ability to use the old
Indian medicines. Yet through the latter part of the book, Lipsha finds redemption from his
disenfranchisement by finding the identity of his parents and accepting his talent. It is after he
discovers this information that Lipsha crosses the river water and steps into his new existence.
The character of Henry Junior not only illustrates the loneliness of not knowing one s father, but
also of not belonging to the majority race of one s country. Henry Junior is one of the seemingly
infinite amount of sons which resulted from Lulu Lamartine s friendliness . Due to this renowned
trait of Lulu,
Henry Junior was never quite sure who his father was. Yet Henry felt no connection with his
fatherland either. In fact, fighting for the white man s war in
Vietnam was inevitably the cause for Henry Junior s death. The atrocities committed during the war
were never forgotten by Henry Junior s conscience and it isn t until his suicide in the river that his
guilt and alienation is lifted.
The intervention of so called western culture to the Indian population of
North America has created a society of indigenous people that

Inspiration Of The Decade Throughout history, African Americans faced daily inequalities through

King influenced many to take that step and fight for their rights, for at the end of the day they
were all human. Made up of the same components and by the same God. King shared his dreams
and goals for the African American community through the works of non violence, till this day his
tactics of peaceful marches, petitions and walks; have all left their everlasting effect that till this

Assault On Gun Control
Assault on Gun Control
Over the years gun control has been an issue that has been argued over and over. Some say
stricter laws are needed to control the guns that are out in the public. Other say harsher
background checks need to be done. Even gone as far as banning certain weapons that someone
can own in the United States. But not matter what laws or restrictions are in place, the fact
remains, guns don t kill people, people kill people. First, I want to define a question that people
have. What is the definition of a mass shooting? Since I will be talking about this a little I want
to define a mass shooting. There is not a specific definition of mass shooting, an accepted one
says that an incident in which at least four people are shot (injured or killed) is considered a mass
shooting. The FBI, only considers an incident a mass murder if three or more people are killed Lord
(2017) So some of the facts or statistics may not be as correct as one would like. This is tough
when trying to present an accurate figure during an argument.
Everyone is so eager to jump on the band wagon to restrict or ban weapons or mainly semi/full
automatic assault style weapons. They talk about the mass shootings of recent time; Sandy Hook
Elementary School shooting, 26 deaths, Route 91 Music Fest in Las Vegas, 58 deaths, and 26
deaths at the Baptist church in Texas. Nestel Keneally (2017) These are all because of
semiautomatic or fully automatic weapons. These facts are true. But they

Psychological Effects Of The Revolutionary War
The Dirty War , also known as Process of National Reorganization, took place from 1976 to 1983.
It took place by Argentina s military dictatorship against left wing political opponents. This war
killed between 10,000 and 30,000 citizens in Argentina. In March of 1976, a military group
removed the president and closed National Congress, imposed censorship, banned trade unions, and
brought state and municipal government under military control. The new president who performed
these actions was Jorge Rafael Videla. Videla believed that the military should be the spinal column
of power to which civilians must adhere (351). He believed that with the military in charge
Argentina would be more stable and grow. Throughout the country many people

Egalitarianism In A Simple Heart, By Gustave Flaubert
The Enlightenment was a beginning of ideas about what the human mind was capable of. People
started thinking about what human affect this world, beside the power of god. Egalitarianism was
the buzzword of the century, and it meant the promise of fair treatment for all people, regardless
of background. Those thoughts had been expressed in the Enlightenment literature through the
desires of different fates of the lower classes for a simple life and sincere love. In spite of being a
servant (Alyosha the Pot, and A simple heart) or a Fruitseller (The Fruitseller from Kabul), they
always have their own fate and the right to decide their ways. Late nineteenth century writers
started initiating a new style called realism practiced by authors such... Show more content on

This story, like many other Tagore s stories that are strongly rooted in context and period, offers
a classical perspective on humanism. The story highlights themes such as love, trust, friendship,
loyalty, class divides; which mean all the casual things that happen to an average people. The
author bring to us a contrast between two social classes. One side is Rahmat, a man from the
mountains of Afghanistan, who had left his family, his daughter behind to make his way through
life. Then one day he met a young girl, who represented for the opposite class, named Mini. He
intermediately felt attached by this little 5 years old girl because of the similarity of this girl and
his daughter. The two opposite classes had quickly became best friend. Although the Kabuliwallah
came to this place for business, he would bring the young girl dried fruits and nuts, without
calculating about personal profit but out of sheer happiness of the thought that Mini would enjoy
them. One of the important pieces of the relationship and the story was when Mini and the
Kabuliwallah would sing. This small detail has shown the link between the upper and lower class.
This situation has never happened before and it even make Mimi s mother anxious. Suddenly a
turning point occurred and broke that miracle, Mini s father saw the Kabuliwallah in the street
covered in blood and being arrested.

Silkwood
The story of one of the most famous worker s compensation cases, Karen Silkwood vs. Kerr
McGee, was the inspiration for hundreds of articles, several books, televisions shows, and a
movie. In the early 1970s, Silkwood worked as a lab analyst in an Oklahoma Kerr McGee plant
which manufactured plutonium pins used as fuel for nuclear reactors (The Karen Silkwood Story,
2004).. Plutonium, a radioactive chemical element, is known to be highly toxic and carcinogenic.
Silkwood, an elected union official and outspoken critic of Kerr McGee s health and safety
practices, began collecting and recording information to substantiate her charges that employees at
the plant were dangerously exposed to toxic chemicals. In early November 1974, Silkwood was...

If cancer is developed from a radiation exposure on the job, the workers compensation law would
cover it. However, the contamination resulted in hysteria and fear in Silkwood in which she
required medical treatment and examination. The Workers Compensation Act required
reimbursement for medical attention from job related accidents (Walsh p 496). Silkwood had
missed time from work during testing, and she incurred medical expense which was respectfully
for paid by Kerr McGee. But even if she had not, work time loss and medical expense are not
necessary requisites to finding an injury is exclusively covered by workers compensation. The
court concluded they made a mistake in not ruling that the issue of personal injury must be
determined under the Workers Compensation Act. The disposition on this issue eliminated the need
to discuss the sufficiency of the evidence and other arguments relating to the amount of damages
for personal injury and the fairness of the trial on that aspect of the case. It is somewhat unclear
how Kerr McGee determined that the federal regulation of nuclear energy prevents application of
the workers compensation law for injuries on the job. The existence here of significant damage to
Silkwood s personal property in her apartment required the court to consider additional issues
recognized in the appeal. In conclusion, the Workers Compensation Act applies only to

the specialized cells that form all parts of the body . When the cells in her surface layer should ve

nails didn t take on all the vital properties that make those parts of her body work. What I admire
most from Melanie is that despite everything she s gone through; she came through in the end as an

Government Intervention On The Internet Essay
Government Intervention on the Internet
During the last decade, our society has become based on the sole ability to move large amounts of
information across great distances quickly.
Computerization has influenced everyone s life in numerous ways. The natural evolution of
computer technology and this need for ultra fast communications has caused a global network of
interconnected computers to develop. This global network allows a person to send E mail across
the world in mere fractions of a second, and allows a common person to access wealths of
information worldwide.
This newfound global network, originally called Arconet, was developed and funded solely by and
for the U.S. government. It was to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I am opposed to such content on the Internet and therefore am a firm believer in
Internet censorship. However, the question at hand is just how much censorship the government
impose. Because the Internet has become the largest source of information in the world, legislative
safeguards are indeed imminent. Explicit material is not readily available over the mail or
telephone and distribution of obscene material is illegal. Therefore, there is no reason this stuff
should go unimpeded across the Internet. Sure, there are some blocking devices, but they are no
substitute for well reasoned law. To counter this, the United States has set regulations to determine
what is categorized as obscenity and what is not.
By laws set previously by the government, obscene material should not be accessible through the
Internet. The problem society is now facing is that cyberspace is like a neighborhood without a
police department. quot;Outlaws quot; are now able to use powerful cryptography to send and
receive uncrackable communications across the Internet. Devices set up to filter certain
communications cannot filter that which cannot be read, which leads to my other topic of interest:
data encryption.
By nature, the Internet is an insecure method of transferring data. A single E mail packet may

company behind it. To accomplish this, he enlists with the hacktivist group DedSec and takes
on a variety of missions in and around San Francisco. While first playing the game, I noticed
how different it felt from the original entry in the series. Instead of opening with cut scenes of a
digital heist gone wrong followed by the traumatic death of the main character s niece, the game
starts off by tasking the player to break into a guarded server farm while fun electronic music
plays in the background. They even throw in a Mission Impossible reference in the first lines of
dialogue when a mysterious digitally altered voice says: Your mission, should you choose to
accept it, is to bypass Blume s security doors and get inside (Watch Dogs 2). However, Watch

History Of The Irish Famine
The United States had a huge impact on Ireland. It can be stated that it started off with the
Americas shipping potatoes up to Ireland. The Irish became dependent on the spud as there were
many available and the variation in meals you can prepare with them. One can boil them, mash
them, or stick them in a stew along with many other delicacies. By 1845, 40 percent of the country
s population routinely lived almost entirely on potatoes.
Along came Ireland s great famine between 1845 and 1952. This famine not only killed through
starvation, but also with terrible illnesses and bone deterioration. These diseases included, but were
not limited to, typhus, scurvy, syphilis, osteomyelitis, tuberculosis, and rickets. These people were

Hypothesis
The more silt soil contains gives a longer water holding capacity for the soil and the more clay it
contains gives a shorter water holding capacity.
Procedure I
Take separate samples of humus and forest ground soil and place into cups. Using spray bottle
filled with water, take a handful of soil into your hand and mist it with water. Squeeze the samples
and try to form it into a ball or a ribbon and determine its texture. Afterwards, do the same test again
and determine the consistence and observe the soil structure.
Questions
Considering the samples analyzed, the relationship between texture and consistence varies directly
because larger particles may affect the texture to the point where it is rough and the opposite when

Clay generally has a much higher water holding capacity than that of silt or sand because the
particle size of the clay is much smaller allowing much less water to escape. Sand, in comparison,
has very large particles which creates space that the water very easily flows out of.
Procedure V
Use the same procedure as described before to prepare the fresh columns of soil and humus.
Weigh the columns of dry soil and humus. First, using the forest soil, use twist ties to suspend the
dry columns and the water saturated columns from the previous day in plastic vials. Put 10 mL of
water in the 60 cc cup. Record how long it takes for the first drop of water to come out the bottom
to the column. Watch until there is no more water standing on top of the column. Do this for the
dry forest soil and humus. Repeat with the wet soil column.
Question
In chart. The relationship between particle size and percolation rate is that the smaller the
particle size, the lower the percolation rate. the high permeability of wet sand and the low
permeability of wet clay. Rain on sandy soil will be quickly absorbed, while rain on clay will be
more likely to run off. Therefore, the ditch at the bottom of the clay soil field would be more likely

  • 2. The Nature And Role Of Law In Democracy The nature and role of law is important to political theory because the use of law raises important questions about oppression versus liberation and morality. Law in a democracy in relation to the citizens that it governs should strive not to oppress, but rather to liberate and assist citizens when in conflict with higher officials or fellow citizens. Laws in a democracy should be held with the intent of safeguarding the public and promoting the common good. John Stuart Mill makes a valid point when he says: The only purpose for which power can rightfully be exercised over any member of a civilized community against his will is to prevent harm to others. In addition to this, there is a fine line between the law and morality, as not every citizen shares the same moral values. Law is able to be more finite, as it has a written set of rules that citizens should strive to follow. However, morality is more subjective, as it weighs the right and wrong in given situations. The rule of law simply states that the law should be the overarching guideline. The rule of law provides a framework that both citizens and government officials should follow. John Locke stated that the rule of law provided protection from every other member of society, as indeed they are from him. The rule of law allows for the right to life, liberty, and property so long as harm is not taken to other citizens. In addition, the rule of law protects individuals from the state and ensures that government is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Navajo Culture Research Paper Across America, countless tribes and cultures have been practiced for centuries. There is so much diversity amongst these people ranging from the north eastern Iroquois to the south western Hopi people. Even though these people live in such different lifestyles, many of the indigenous tribes have similar perspectives on the world, especially after western expansion during the 1800 s. Tribes, no matter where they are geographically, all have some sort of tradition or ritual that they do which can be for spirits, new and old, or for the people themselves. Three individual indigenous people who are some of the more well known in modern day standards are the Hopi, Navajo, and Lakota people. All of whom live in different locations across North America.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Similar to the Navajo, the Lakota are a matriarchal society. The Lakota people practice similar traditions to the Navajo in that direction matters. Whether is be East or West the direction is important to their religion the same way east is important to the Navajo s belief of the rising sun. To the Lakota people directions have a unique color associated with it and certain characteristics as well. North is white and is portrayed as cold, South is yellow and known for its full days, East is red for its sunrise, and West is black as that is where the sky becomes dark. However, there are two additional directions, up and down, up is blue because of the sky, and down is green because of the earth. This is the backbone of the Lakota people. Another tradition in which the Lakota people are unique to is the Sun Dance. During the hottest day of the year, men, and men only, pierce their chest with a hook tied to a rope and connect to a pole to dance. This is done as a vision quest for the individual dancing as they do so until they collapse or the day is done. One last tradition that both Hopi and Navajo people can relate to are sweat lodges. However, in Lakota people they are referred to as Rock Lodges or Inipi. The reason for this is because it is for their ancestors (the rocks) who are being focused on, not the individuals within. The rock lodge is seen as the womb of the earth. This is why ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Down Syndrome As A Cognitive Disorder Essay Down syndrome as a cognitive disorder Down syndrome (DS) is relatively well known as a genetic disorder to the general public and children with this syndrome form one of the most readily identifiable groups of children with moderate to severe learning difficulties. It has been over 130 years since Langdon Down first described DS and 30 years since the presence of the defining extra copy of chromosome 21 was identified by Lejeune and his team of French geneticists. Delay in the development of cognitive capacities is a primary consequence of Down syndrome. Despite such cognitive delay, however, young children with Down syndrome can be empathic, affectionate and engaging (Wishart Pitcairn, 2000). What is Down Syndrome Down syndrome is a chromosomal disorder that is typically caused when a baby is conceived with 47 chromosomes instead of the normal 46. Starting in the womb, this additional genetic material alters the course of the child s development. The most common form of Down syndrome, Trisomy 21, occurs when a child is born with a full three copies of the 21st chromosome, rather than the normal two. In rare cases, Down syndrome is caused by other chromosomal arrangements. Children with Down syndrome typically have intellectual disabilities, hypotonia (low muscle tone) and characteristic facial features, such as upward slanted eyes and a flattened nasal bridge. • 5. Examples Of Character Changes In Remember The Titans Describe how a character changes in the film Remember the Titans Explain why this change occurs. In the film Remember the titans which was directed by Boaz Yakin. I thought that Julius had changed the most during the film and these changes occurred in these three points. One point is how Julius was a very strong an opinionated person. The second point is Julius and Gerry finally confronted each other about getting along and the last point is how coach Boone pushed Julius and Gerry to share the captaincy roles to work hard together for the team to follow in example. Julius was a very opinionated person, who was all about himself and not looking after his own team or anyone else for that matter. For example when Julius was confronted by Gerry, during this conversation Julius said I m supposed to wear out myself for this team? What team? Nope that s not what I m going to do is I m going to look after myself. When this confrontation was happening there were many close up camera shots, this was because the director wanted to show the emotion and anger in the faces of Gerry and Julius. This shows that Julius is a very opinionated person and he only cares about himself, this is shown in what he told Julius. Julius and Gerry confronted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 6. Analysis of The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas and A... Hi, This is not a rewrite request. I fulfilled all of the instructions in the original assignment which were to provide a thesis that answered the prompt and to provide examples that supported the thesis. Had I not fulfilled those instructions, you would not have turned the paper in and received this additional feedback from your instructor. This additional feedback warrants an additional assignment. You should place another order for more pages. Thanks. True Lies One can argue that the veracity of autobiographies, by nature, is extremely deceptive. The vast majority of the facts contained within them are colored, quite naturally, by the perceptions and interpretations of the author. The tendency to take liberty with the truth is often exacerbated when the author of such works has an affinity (or perhaps gift) for the written language, such as is the case with both Ernest Hemingway and Gertrude Stein, who produced fairly unconventional autobiographical works entitled A Moveable Feast and The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas, respectively. The proclivity to glorify one s own actions and deeds in effect to make oneself appear cool is often an irresistible temptation, especially for those writing about people (including themselves) whom posterity admires, such as the lost generation of expatriate American writers living in Paris in the early part of the 20th century. In light of that fact, it is interesting to note that both Hemingway and Stein create an image of their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Orwell s novel Nineteen Eighty Four most commonly gets compared to Aldous Huxley s novel Brave New World, which was originally published in 1932, seventeen years before Orwell published his own anti totalitarian work. Comparable to Nineteen Eighty Four, Brave New Worldis a dystopian novel in which a political agenda is discussed via a fabricated government. However, while similarities can be drawn, the two differ in their content. In Brave New World, Huxley s fictional society is controlled by drugs and efforts to distract its citizens who are immersed in a world of technology that could only have been dreamed of at the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the same fashion that he took influence from the writings of other authors before him, authors in the generations after him have done the same. Margaret Atwood, whose novel The Handmaid s Tale (1985) has sparked political interest in its recent resurgence much as Orwell s works have, was inspired by Orwell s ideologies, mainly those represented in Animal Farm. As previously mentioned, Orwell is no novice at creating dystopian societies, a skill that Atwood, too, shows in The Handmaid s Tale, the plot of which centers around the handmaids (women) being used strictly for reproductive purposes. The more substantial influence, however, is the use of satire in literature. In Animal Farm, Orwell created a politically satirical society of animals meant to represent the regime under Joseph Stalin, whom he opposed. In The Handmaid s Tale, however, Atwood used satire for social justices rather than a political agenda, though the two often coincide. Atwood takes a dystopian view of a world in which women are used as objects to keep the population alive and uses it to make readers understand why feminism is needed; if women are not allowed to choose what they are able to do with their bodies, be it abortion or birth control, they will soon only be seen as a means of ... The creation of this construction was made possible by the use of the technologically advanced 3D design computer program called Catia (5). Critics of the Guggenheim feel that although the museum is iconic it fails as a public place because it does not reflect and support the civilization, culture and finances of Bilbao (6). Nevertheless, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is the zenith of Gehry s architectural career. Another masterpiece of Gehry is the Walt Disney Concert Halllocated in Los Angeles. This Genre of music developed from other styles of music such as country, Jazz, and gospel. One Reason for the sudden emergence of Rock and Roll was because of the likes of Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino and other Rock and Roll icons that have transformed music, as we know it. Pioneer of Rock and Roll During the early 50s, many artists were coming out with there own Rock and Roll songs making it difficult for us to identify who was the pioneer of Rock and Roll. Let me say a few words about Gluppity Glup, (Seuss ln. 21 22). In this quote the author uses the word gluppity glup. This word is an example of alliteration. This word also has kind of a dirty and icky feel to it. This may inform the reader that this stuff is not good and that it is bad and dirty. One example in the Jabberwocky of the author using sound devices is when the protagonist battles the Jabberwock. In the text it states, The vorpal blade went snicker snack, (Carroll ln. 18). This is not only an example of alliteration, but also onomatopoeia. The reader can assume that snicker snack is the sound of the blade hitting something. This can show a certain way of wanting to assimilate to something that already exists, which Anzaldua would argue with. Anzaldua believes in women having their own voice, she is not looking to fit in the world of the white writers society accepts, she is looking for others to accept her own writing and accept the community she belongs to with the characteristics she identifies with. It all differs in the way they act and how radical they want their effects to be. Analyzing Anzaldua s letter, one would agree with the fact that her feeling of need is one more revolutionary that echoes that of the Young Lords. She invites the mujeres de color, companions in writing (Anzaldua 165), to find the real voice within them and to show it, not to work through what already exists but to create a new category where they can all identify. Anzaldua invites her compaГ±eras to not feel oppressed by those that are accepted by society, to not let their own expectations condition them (166). • 21. The Importance Of The Anthropocene And How It Is Affecting... In this paper, I will explain what is the Anthropocene and how it is affecting the mortality of trees. Tree especially forest can be wiped out in two way, abiotic and biotic. Abiotic means of death are naturally accruing events that trees experience and with given time build resilience to, but with the help of man these events have become more reoccurring and much more extreme. Climate change is a great factor in the increase of tree mortality, with the rise in global temperature and the increase in extreme weather from the intense burning of fossil fuels. Biotic means that affect the mortality of trees are starvation due to lack of light, water and sometimes lack of Carbon dioxide. There are also diseases, insects and direct biotic means such as deforestation, all will be discussed at some point in this paper. Introduction: The very existence of carbon life form here on Earth started because of trees, and life will only continue to exist through tree mortality. If trees continue to die at an alarming rate, then human life will end shortly thereafter. Climate change is one of the major factors in tree deaths today, with global warming being responsible for the higher air temperatures, which in turn causes the land to experience extra drying form drought conditions. Extreme weather is also a cause of tree death, events like super storm Sandy and hurricane Katrina, that flooded parts of New York and Louisiana for days. During the 19th and 20th century, the suffragette groups used various militant and peaceful methods and tactics to achieve equality for women. These actions are clear inspirations in modern Australian feminism and society. 19th and 20th century Britain was a patriarchal society where women were perceived as second class citizens, not given many rights and additionally unequal to males despite their level of education, role and requirement to pay taxes. Society perceived women as child bearers and the property of males. There is a point in the play where Hamlet vocalizes his feelings of displacement and loss within his world. The To be, or not to be monologue plunges the audience into the confused psyche of Hamlet, allowing us to empathize with Hamlet s existential crisis. This window into Hamlet s dilemma strikes the audience, it is relatable in that we all face moments in our lives where we stand back and question our socially and self imposed roles. The ramblings of Hamlet echo through history, and those same sentiments can be felt to this day. The true comparison lies in how we handle these tribulations. Kafka, Franz, and Joachim Neugroschel. The Passenger. The Metamorphosis, in the Penal Colony, and Other Stories: With Two New Stories. 1st Scribner pbk. fiction ed., New York, Simon Schuster, 2000, pp. 40 41. A woman which then, naturally defaulted to one of European descent was considered to lie somewhere on the spectrum having more authority than a child but not nearly as much as a man. The black woman was so far removed that she was essentially considered nothing more than an animal. The Jezebel was the mule of the earth. A saying that become popularized in the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. Essentially, it meant that the constructs of a dominant white society and the exclusivity meant that the Black women s purpose was to bear the brunt of society s harshest treatment. The Jezebel was valued for her strength, resilience and fertility essentially like an animals whose only purpose is to be exploited until something good comes of their future, of which, they have no control ... These misfortunes can be triggered by human action or can occur involuntarily. Ranging from natural disasters, to diseases, to internal or external conflict, each has been proven to be detrimental to the stability of the society. Haitihas recently gotten attention for being simultaneously affected by multiple crises; each of which helps to place Haiti in a trap which they cannot lift themselves out of without foreign intervention and aid. Officials in Haiti estimate that an overwhelming 90,000 to 120,000 children are currently forced into this practice, reflecting greatly on the lack of economic stability and growth within the country (2005 Trafficking in Persons Report). When thinking of sexual exploitation, forced prostitution and rape are often the first to come to mind; however, women of Haiti have been noted to consciously choose to exploit themselves. Furthermore, women will trade sex for a goods, shelter, or even security, in turn causing sex to be classified as an income generating strategy (Kempadoo, 84). According to a statistic pulled in 1984, 30 percent of the prostitutes from Haiti or from the Dominican Republic were between fifteen and twenty years old (Benoit, 39). Consequently, the numbers of individuals affected by trafficking in Haiti is evident of the presence and nature of crisis occurring. Haiti is extremely susceptible to the humanitarian crisis of human trafficking due to their unstable government, lack of law enforcement, and static economy. Although Jean Bertrand Aristide held the position of president, the society still suffered from brutal acts of violence. Due to the fear of being overthrown, the military acted in this way to divest the Haitian people of their freedoms (Americas Watch, 1). The Dynamics of Brice Family Brice Family Dynamics Presenting Problems Overall, the Brice family has some clear issues that are causing stress for everyone, including their adolescent daughter Claudia. The family did not believe in the power of family therapy, yet they had little places to turn to in response to Claudia s growing anger problems. They had tried therapy before, but to no avail. We are introduced to their problems both from a description of the anger between each other and their own explanations of what is going on. Their son Don is absent, both literally and figuratively, showing how he tends to avoid the overall family struggles. Claudia s role in the family dynamic was described early on by her mother, yet this explanation was done in a very isolating way for Claudia. Her mother explained her strange ideas, but that only invoked a strong and angry reaction from Claudia herself. In fact, the two seemed to feed off one another in terms of their anger. It is clear that the main issues were a discrepancy between what Claudia wanted her life to be like and the heightened rules and expectations her family was imposing on her. Mother and daughter continuously engaged in fighting, clearly not seeing each others point of view, but too caught up in their own emotional reactions regarding the situation. The fact that Don wasn t present just put more highlight on Claudia, and showed how the family viewed her as the problem, not taking responsibility for it themselves. This was felt by ... • 42. Rosa Bonheur s Buffalo Bill Bonheur was full of curiosity about the many animals and American Indians that were part of the spectacle, reflecting her enormous enthusiasm in at least seventeen paintings and countless sketches produced during her almost daily visits to the encampment. An important portrait of Buffalo Bill himself, mounted on his favourite white horse, was also completed during the time that Bonheur spent there. It s a straightforward composition, with the white horse trotting on a somewhat dusty path towards the viewer, slightly at an angle and meeting our gaze, while Cody glances to one side as if enacting the tracker he once was (see Fig. 7). The background is filled with some nondescript shrubs and trees, ubiquitous to many picturesque locations of the world, accompanying a rather calm blue sky. Fig. 7 Rosa Bonheur, Col. William F. Cody (Buffalo Bill), 1889. The equestrian portrait of Buffalo Bill became an American icon. Buffalo Bill was a metaphor for all that America stood for and it s no surprise Bonheur was drawn to the man, perhaps seeing him as a beacon of hope on horseback of a symbolic white steed. Some say stricter laws are needed to control the guns that are out in the public. Other say harsher background checks need to be done. Even gone as far as banning certain weapons that someone can own in the United States. But not matter what laws or restrictions are in place, the fact remains, guns don t kill people, people kill people. First, I want to define a question that people have. What is the definition of a mass shooting? Since I will be talking about this a little I want to define a mass shooting. Therefore, there is no reason this stuff should go unimpeded across the Internet. Sure, there are some blocking devices, but they are no substitute for well reasoned law. To counter this, the United States has set regulations to determine what is categorized as obscenity and what is not. By laws set previously by the government, obscene material should not be accessible through the Internet.
