Welcome to our introductory presentation on linguistics. In this presentation, we will explore the fascinating world of language and linguistics, beginning with the definition of language itself, delving into its key functions, and examining its unique characteristics. We will then transition into defining linguistics, the scientific study of language, and discuss its various types and branches. By exploring these foundational aspects, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview that highlights the complexity and diversity of human language. This presentation is designed to offer both foundational knowledge and insightful perspectives into how language functions as a crucial tool for communication and cultural expression. Join us as we embark on this linguistic journey, uncovering the intrinsic properties that make language an integral part of human existence and a primary focus of linguistic study.
Kurdish-English Code-Switching in FacebookIsmail abdulla
The purpose of the present study is to introduce code-switching from Kurdish to English and the other
way around by the Kurdish, with an English background, Facebook users. Another purpose of the current paper
is to explain the role of this phenomenon in sociolinguistic, functional and structural perspectives. It also aims at
positing the functions and reasons that trigger the Facebook users to code-switch in their Facebook interactions.
On this basis, the researcher has deteeles the accounts of 6 Kurdish native speaking Facebook users with good
linguistic competence and performance in English; each of these users is educated and holds BA, MA, or PHD in
English Language and Literature. After collecting enough data from these users‟ Facebook posts and comments,
the researcher has analyzed them to fulfill the aforementioned objectives. At the very beginning, it has been
hypothesized that Kurdish-English code-switching in Facebook can be examined according to the codeswitching six-function model of the American sociolinguist, Gumperz. As a result of this attempt, the study has
come out with a bundle of useful outcomes and findings. It has been concluded that in addition to the sixfunctions of Gumperz‟s, Kurdish- English code-switching performs four further functions, referred to in detail in
the conclusions section.
A pragmatic analysis of some Quranic verses in Light of Grice's cooperative p...Ismail abdulla
The present paper is an attempt to evaluate the
applicability of Grice’s Co-operative Principle and Conversational
Maxims, as one of the outstanding models in Pragmatics, to some
selected Quranic conversations. Grice’s model is regarded as
template for the flow of conversations and interactions held
between people. Quran, as a Holy Text in Islam, contains many
speech events, i.e., situations wherein conversations take place. In
the stories narrated in Quran, there are situations in which, as the
ordinary life of the human beings, participants converse with one
another. In this study , the researchers examine the applicability
of the conversation model of Grice to the Quranic conversations.
To this end, the researchers have quoted some verses from Quran,
first in Arabic along with their translations in English , and
analysed them in light of Grice’s model of conversation analysis.
Findings indicate that in the Quranic conversations there are
occasions where the maxims of conversation are observed and in
some other cases not observed. This fact attests the universality of Grice’s model.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
1. Origins of Language

2. In this seminar, we will to try answer
the following questions
2
1.What is language?
2.How did language originate?
3.What are the reasons behind
the diversity of languages in
our present day?
Origins of Language
4. Language is one of
the best means by
which humans
communicate.
Origins of Language 4
5. Importance of language
Language:
Is everywhere
permeates our thoughts
Mediates our relations with others
Creeps into our dreams
And in it,
Human knowledge and culture is stored and
transmitted.
So, without it, all the above points are IMPOSSIBLE!
Origins of Language 5
6. How and when did
language originate?
Origins of Language 6
7. Most of the Western Linguists &
Philosophers believe
There was a time when people didn’t
have the ability to talk.
Humans developed language between
100,000 and 50,000 years ago (but, written language
appeared 5000 years ).
There is no physical evidence about when
and how of language in humans emerged.
All what is said in this regard is a matter
of speculation. Origins of Language 7
8. Some of these speculations are from
four different sources
Divine
Source
Natural
Sound Source
Physical
Adaptation

Genetic
Source
Origins of Language 8
9. Natural Sound Source
The suggestion of this source is:
Primitive words could have been imitations of
natural sounds which early men heard around
them.
CAW-CAW sound of flying objects
COO-COO sound of a flying creature.
People started to imitate the sounds and named
the objects and creatures with these sounds.
Origins of Language 9
10. In addition to cuckoo
Splash
Bang
Boom
Rattle
Buzz
Hiss
Roar
This is known as bow-wow theory
Onomatopoetic words

How reference was made to the:
o Soundless words
o Abstract concepts
12. Natural cries of emotion
• Pain: Ouch!
• Anger: Ah!
• disgust: yuck!
These are produced with intakes of breath!
But normal spoken language is produced when
air is exhaled rather than inhaled!
Origins of Language 12
13. Yo-he-ho theory
Sounds made due to physical effort involving
several people could be the source of our language:
• Grunts
• Groans
• Curses
This theory is based on the social and cultural
cooperation found among early men.
However, apes have grunts but they do not have
a language like ours!
Origins of Language 13
16. Physical Adaptation Source
Origins of Language 16
This source depends on the physical
features humans possess, especially
those that are distinct from other
creatures
17. Human physical features that help
language
• Human teeth are upright / f, v/
• The lips are made of intricate muscles /p, b/
• The tongue is also helpful.
• Human larynx (voice box: containing vocal cords)
pharynx (resonator).
• Human brain: left hemisphere, in most of the people is
responsible for controlling the above organs of speech.
Origins of Language 17
19. The Genetic Source
Origins of Language 19
• The reason why physical adaptation takes
place in humans & why deaf and dumb can be
fluent sign language users is answered by
supporters of innateness hypothesis (human
offspring are born with a special capacity for
language).
• The language capacity is genetically hard-
wired in born babies.
21. Divine Sources
In most of the worlds religions
language is regarded as a gift from
gods to the humans:
Hinduism: Saraswati (Sarasvati),
Brahma’s wife, has given language to
humans as a gift.
In Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
