2. Courage Clarity
CoachabilityCompetence
Character
These five character traits mark the individual who will
shape the future. In his book, Stanley demonstrates
how to:
• Discover and play to one’s strengths
• Leverage uncertainty
• Maintain moral authority
• Harness fear
• Enlist a leadership coach
3. In areas under your authority
that are outside of your
competency level, delegate.
Delegation allows for greater
productivity.
“The less you do the more you
accomplish.”
“The less you do the more you
enable others to accomplish.”
Identify the area where you add
the most value to your
organization and make that your
focus.
80/20 Principle: 80 percent of what you achieve in your job comes from 20
percent of the time spent.
Competence
4. You shouldn’t try to be a well-rounded leader because it’s not possible
Evaluate your strengths and learn to hone in on them
Evaluate your weaknesses and determine an individual who is more competent
in the area to lead
Practice self-evaluation and invite others to provide input
Competence
5. Change is an essential part of
progress
The courage to step in a
different direction differentiates
leader from followers
“leaders are not always the first to see
the need for change, but they are the first
to act.”
Courage
Courageous leaders must be
confident yet careful
Carelessness is considered
unthoughtful
Determine whether you are
being careful or fearful
6. 3 expressions of courage
The Courage to Say No- not every opportunity is worth taking action, keep sight
of your vision and take action toward that goal, there will always be more
opportunities than time
The Courage to Face Current Reality- leaders must accept when there needs to
be change, you can’t enact your plan for the future if your view of reality is
distorted
The Courage to Dream- don’t put a fence around your ideas but let them roam,
this is how we determine vision, don’t let doubt stop you from letting your
dreams be actualized
Courage
7. Leadership responsibility positively
correlates to uncertainty
Leaders must learn to navigate
uncertainty with clarity
Leaders can be wrong, but they can’t be
unclear in their direction
Leadership
Responsibility
Uncertainty
Clarity
“Uncertainty is indispensable from leadership”
8. Determine your certainty quotient and try to stay within that area when
making a decision
Embrace your uncertainty by being confident about what you do not know
DO NOT PRETEND TO KNOW SOMETHING YOU DON’T KNOW
Seek counsel from seasoned leaders
Revise your plans as needed
Clarity
Certainty quotient: calculate how certain you were about
past decisions and determine what percent
certainty you have made your best decisions at- this is
your certainty quotient.
9. Coaching
Allowing someone more experienced to coach you will maximize
your potential. This is the same reason that the number one tennis
player in the world enlists a coach: so they can continue to improve.
Outside evaluation is essential.
Misconception: leaders no longer need to be lead.
10. You can be more successful at a quicker rate with a leadership coach
A leadership coach does not have to have more skills than you to help you
improve
A leadership coach compares you to your own strengths, not others.
Leadership coaches:
Observe
Instruct
Inspire
Coaching
11. You must be teachable to be coachable
Coaching
You must be a good listener to be teachable
12. “Character is not
essential to leadership.” BUT
Character
“Character is what makes
you a leader worth
following.”
If you wish to have respect by those who follow you, you must have
integrity. You must have the willingness to do what is right,
regardless of their feelings. This standard comes from God.
“The mind governed by flesh is death, but the mind governed by
the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is
hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so”
(Romans 8:6-7)
Definition: the will to do what’s right even when it’s hard
13. Your character will be tested in leadership
It may seem favorable, or necessary, to temporarily compromise moral standards
Even though it is easier to become successful by doing so, there is nothing worth
compromising God’s standards
Character
