TrunkDB is the new cloud-based version of ORDs (Oxford Research Database Service), which was originally designed to provide database hosting and manipulation services for researchers. TrunkDB allows researchers to create multiple versions of databases, share data with colleagues, and access data securely from anywhere through an online interface. It aims to support researchers by treating their data, rather than just the database, as the primary object and allowing various ways of organizing, updating, and viewing data over time through a versioning system. TrunkDB is currently in private beta testing with plans to launch publicly in June.

Mind the gap! Reflections on the state of repository data harvesting
A 24x7 presentation at Open Repositories 2017 in Brisbane, Australia.
I start with an opinionated history of the evolution of repository data harvesting since the late 1990's to the present. A conclusion is that we are currently in danger of creating a repository environment with fewer cross-repository services than before, with the potential to reinforce the silos we hope to open. I suggest that the community needs to agree upon a new solution, and further suggest that solution should be ResourceSync.

One of the first add-on connections was Dataverse, which provides value to users through an easy connection as a repository service. This talk will introduce the Dataverse add-on connection and provide a technical view of how it was built and how it connects the OSF and Dataverse.
How Worthy is DSpace for Digital Libraries

It allows for the creation, organization, and access of digital content. Linked Data
Linked Data allows evolving the web into a global data space by publishing structured data on the web using RDF and by linking data items across different data sources. It follows the Linked Data principles of using URIs to identify things and HTTP URIs to look up those names, providing useful RDF information when URIs are dereferenced, and including RDF links to discover related data. The amount of published Linked Data on the web has grown enormously since 2007. Large data sources like DBpedia extract structured data from Wikipedia and act as hubs by interlinking different data sets, enabling new applications and search over integrated data.
RJ Broker: Automating Delivery of Research Output to Repositories
RJ Broker is a middleware tool that automates the delivery of research output from content suppliers like Europe PMC to institutional and subject repositories. It accepts research articles and metadata, processes them into a common format, identifies target repositories based on author affiliation, and transfers the content to registered repositories using protocols like SWORD. The tool provides different levels of service, including browsing content, downloading via APIs, notification of new content, and direct delivery of open access and embargoed content to repositories. Joining the RJ Broker service can help increase deposits in repositories and reduce effort for complying with open access mandates.

Today libraries face more and new challenges when enabling access to information. The growing amount of information in combination with new non-textual media-types demands a constant changing of grown workflows and standard definitions. Knowledge, as published through scientific literature, is the last step in a process originating from primary scientific data. These data are analysed, synthesised, interpreted, and the outcome of this process is published as a scientific article. Access to the original data as the foundation of knowledge has become an important issue throughout the world and different projects have started to find solutions.
Nevertheless science itself is international; scientists are involved in global unions and projects, they share their scientific information with colleagues all over the world, they use national as well as foreign information providers.
When facing the challenge of increasing access to research data, a possible approach should be global cooperation for data access via national representatives:
* a global cooperation, because scientists work globally, scientific data are created and accessed globally.
* with national representatives, because most scientists are embedded in their national funding structures and research organisations.
DataCite was officially launched on December 1st 2009 in London and has 12 information institutions and libraries from nine countries as members. By assigning DOI names to data sets, data becomes citable and can easily be linked to from scientific publications.
Data integration with text is an important aspect of scientific collaboration. DataCite takes global leadership for promoting the use of persistent identifiers for datasets, to satisfy the needs of scientists. Through its members, it establishs and promotes common methods, best practices, and guidance. The member organisations work independently with data centres and other holders of research data sets in their own domains. Based on the work of the German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB) as the first DOI-Registration Agency for data, DataCite has registered over 850,000 research objects with DOI names, thus starting to bridge the gap between data centers, publishers and libraries.

DSpace-CRIS Workshop

The 90-minute workshop will introduce attendees to the latest version of the DSpace-CRIS module, covering its functional and technical aspects.
DSpace-CRIS is an additional open-source module for the DSpace platform. It extends the DSpace data model providing the ability to manage, collect and expose data about any entities of the research domain, such as people, organizational units, projects, grants, awards, patents, publications, and so on. Before OR2015 a new version of the system will be released to follow the new DSpace 5.0 version. The new version contains, among other things, important enhancements of its integration with ORCID.
The DSpace-CRIS extensible data model will be explained in depth, through examples and discussion with participants.
Other main topics are DSpace-CRIS "components", management of relationships and network analysis functionalities.
At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- understand the DSpace-CRIS data model
- evaluate if DSpace-CRIS fits the requirements of their institution
- use the DSpace-CRIS User Interface

Panel Discussion: COAR Next Generation Repositories: Results and Recommendations
The presentation focus on the recommended technologies to implement in Repository platforms
The nearly ubiquitous deployment of repository systems in higher education and research institutions provides the foundation for a distributed, globally networked infrastructure for scholarly communication. However, repository platforms are still using technologies and protocols designed almost twenty years ago, before the boom of the Web and the dominance of Google, social networking, semantic web and ubiquitous mobile devices.
To that end, in April 2016, COAR launched a working group to identify the technologies and architectures of the next generation of repositories. There are two threads to our work: (1) increase the exposure by repositories of uniform behaviors that can be used by machine agents to fuel novel scholarly applications that reach beyond the scope of a single repository and that enable to smoothly embed repository content into mainstream web applications. (2) integrate with existing scholarly infrastructures, specifically those aimed at identification, as a means to solidly embed repositories in the overall scholarly communication landscape.
This panel will present the results of the COAR Next Generation Repositories Working Group including our vision, design assumptions, use cases, architectural and technical recommendations, and next steps. The session will also include time for audience discussion and feedback.
Standardising research data policies, research data network

A major challenge was the large number of unidentified file formats, which the project is addressing by developing new file format signatures.

These data are analysed, synthesised, interpreted, and the outcome of this process is published as a scientific article. Access to the original data as the foundation of knowledge has become an important issue throughout the world and different projects have started to find solutions.
Nevertheless science itself is international; scientists are involved in global unions and projects, they share their scientific information with colleagues all over the world, they use national as well as foreign information providers.
When facing the challenge of increasing access to research data, a possible approach should be global cooperation for data access via national representatives:
* a global cooperation, because scientists work globally, scientific data are created and accessed globally.
* with national representatives, because most scientists are embedded in their national funding structures and research organisations.
DataCite was officially launched on December 1st 2009 in London and has 12 information institutions and libraries from nine countries as members. By assigning DOI names to data sets, data becomes citable and can easily be linked to from scientific publications.
Data integration with text is an important aspect of scientific collaboration. DataCite takes global leadership for promoting the use of persistent identifiers for datasets, to satisfy the needs of scientists. Through its members, it establishs and promotes common methods, best practices, and guidance. The member organisations work independently with data centres and other holders of research data sets in their own domains. Based on the work of the German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB) as the first DOI-Registration Agency for data, DataCite has registered over 850,000 research objects with DOI names, thus starting to bridge the gap between data centers, publishers and libraries.

The 90-minute workshop will introduce attendees to the latest version of the DSpace-CRIS module, covering its functional and technical aspects.
DSpace-CRIS is an additional open-source module for the DSpace platform. It extends the DSpace data model providing the ability to manage, collect and expose data about any entities of the research domain, such as people, organizational units, projects, grants, awards, patents, publications, and so on. Before OR2015 a new version of the system will be released to follow the new DSpace 5.0 version. The new version contains, among other things, important enhancements of its integration with ORCID.
The DSpace-CRIS extensible data model will be explained in depth, through examples and discussion with participants.
Other main topics are DSpace-CRIS "components", management of relationships and network analysis functionalities.
At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- understand the DSpace-CRIS data model
- evaluate if DSpace-CRIS fits the requirements of their institution
- use the DSpace-CRIS User Interface
- change the default configuration, adapting it to a specific data model.

The presentation focus on the recommended technologies to implement in Repository platforms
The nearly ubiquitous deployment of repository systems in higher education and research institutions provides the foundation for a distributed, globally networked infrastructure for scholarly communication. However, repository platforms are still using technologies and protocols designed almost twenty years ago, before the boom of the Web and the dominance of Google, social networking, semantic web and ubiquitous mobile devices.
To that end, in April 2016, COAR launched a working group to identify the technologies and architectures of the next generation of repositories. There are two threads to our work: (1) increase the exposure by repositories of uniform behaviors that can be used by machine agents to fuel novel scholarly applications that reach beyond the scope of a single repository and that enable to smoothly embed repository content into mainstream web applications. (2) integrate with existing scholarly infrastructures, specifically those aimed at identification, as a means to solidly embed repositories in the overall scholarly communication landscape.
This panel will present the results of the COAR Next Generation Repositories Working Group including our vision, design assumptions, use cases, architectural and technical recommendations, and next steps. The session will also include time for audience discussion and feedback.

You can also use DMS for data distribution to multiple systems. For both of these use cases your source database can be outside of AWS (on premises) or in AWS (EC2 or RDS). DMS can also be used for near real-time replication of data. Replication can be done to one or more targets within AWS, in the same region or across regions. You can also replicate data from databases within AWS to databases outside of AWS. In this session we will discuss all these usage patterns and help you try them out yourselves.
Prerequisites:
You should have good database knowledge and at least some experience with Amazon RDS or Amazon Aurora.
Participants should have an AWS account established and available for use during the workshop.

Recent national and international mandates and reports seek to promote an open research infrastructure which facilitates easy access to knowledge and information for all. For example, The UK Open Research Data Task Force report, released in February 2019, recommends user-friendly services for research data management and infrastructure to maximise interoperability and discoverability.
Jisc has built the Open Research Hub (JORH), which integrates a repository, preservation, reporting and storage platform. This cloud-based service is a community governed, multi-tenant solution for universities and other research institutions to manage, store, preserve and share their published research data. Based on existing open standards, the service’s open and extensive data model incorporates best practice from across the sector, including DataCite, CrossRef, CERIF, Dublin Core and PREMIS.
While the Hub was built to address the needs of research data curation, its adoption of open, best practice standards means it has the potential to allow the service to handle a much wider range of digital research objects, including Open Access articles, theses and software. The data model, rich messaging layer and an open API facilitate interoperability with other institutional and scholarly communications systems. This provides the potential for the Hub to underpin infrastructure capable of meeting the requirements of an ever-evolving open research agenda.
This talk will introduce some of the key initiatives seeking to shape open research infrastructure and discuss how the Hub’s current and future development is directed towards facilitating open research best practice. Consideration will be given to how the Hub either meets or can meet recent recommendations such as FAIR, Plan S, ORDTF and the COAR’s Next Generation Repositories.

The service is currently in development with pilots planned, and would offer repositories, preservation, or an end-to-end solution to members.

Jisc Research Data Shared Service - a Samvera case study
As part of its Research Data Shared Service (RDSS), Jisc has been developing a repository component as part of its core architecture . Through making an integrated research data management platform available to UK Universities, there is a growing demand from small to medium HEIs for the RDSS to provide a single repository solution that fits their needs for publications and data with workflows for Open Access and REF submissions. To achieve this, the repository must be integrated with other Jisc Open Access services such as Sherpa, Jisc Monitor and Publications router, along with those provided by external stakeholders such as ORCID, Crossref, DataCite and OpenAIRE.
This presentation is a case study in evaluating Samvera for this role, and its suitability as a multi-tenanted, sustainable hybrid repository that is both attractive to researchers and universities and aligns with the broader international objectives of the community, the FAIR agenda and open science.
Building a national Data Repository Data Modelling

Stories from the Field: Data are Messy and that's (kind of) ok
This document introduces Jude Towers and David Ellis, who are lecturers focused on quantitative methods and computational social science. This paper explores the significant sacrifices made by these students and even the professors supporting the pro-Palestine movement, with a focus on recent global movements. Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications. The researchers also explore the broader implications of student sacrifices. The findings reveal that these sacrifices are driven by a profound commitment to justice and human rights, and are influenced by the increasing availability of information, peer interactions, and personal convictions. The study also discusses the broader implications of this activism, comparing it to historical precedents and assessing its potential to influence policy and public opinion. The emotional and psychological toll on student activists is significant, but their sense of purpose and community support mitigates some of these challenges. However, the researchers call for acknowledging the broader Impact of these sacrifices on the future global movement of FreePalestine.

What is it? • Originally ORDs: Oxford Research Database Service. • Database as a Service • Designed to support data storage and manipulation during the ongoing research work. • Hosted on Oxford’s own servers. • For the long tail of researchers who had little or no access to share database services • Now moving to the cloud to be TrunkDB
