The document discusses the evolution of network and operations outsourcing in the telecommunications industry. It describes how earlier networks were more predictable with standardized devices, usage patterns, and growth. This allowed network management to be handled internally. However, market pressures around capital expenditures and operating costs led many operators to outsource various network functions. This helped control costs initially but the industry has since faced new challenges from unpredictable traffic patterns driven by viral apps and new devices. Accurately modeling usage is now much more difficult, posing risks to network performance. Outsourcing arrangements must now adapt to address the less predictable new market environment.
Introduction to Robust Net-Centric Services. These are services with a high degree of resilience even when faced with a comprehensive array of faults and/or challenges and inherently capable of reacting gracefully to both internal application changes as well as external environmental changes, all without impacting information exchange.
This document discusses OSS (Operations Support Systems) transformation. It defines OSS and BSS, lists common OSS functions like fault management and performance management. It identifies issues with current siloed OSS architectures like redundancy and budget inefficiency. The key to transformation is consolidation and integration of OSS to make them more customer-centric, service-oriented and aligned with business goals.

Software-Defined Networking (SDN): Unleashing the Power of the NetworkRobert Keahey
It goes without saying that cloud computing has dramatically reshaped the information technology services landscape. Virtualization is unleashing the power of commodity-based technology and open source communities are building new applications and services at an astonishing rate, but networking has lagged behind compute and storage in virtualization and automation. We’ve become accustomed to specialized networking silicon, complex operating systems and highly distributed control planes. For the most part, we’ve accepted the model along with its high costs.
All that is changing! New protocols such as OpenFlow are freeing the network control plane from proprietary operating systems and hardware platforms. We are entering a new era where customers control the features – and release schedules – of new, open networking applications that address the needs of the mega-scale world.
A lot of work is required to realize the potential of Software-Defined Networking (SDN), where we can enjoy the benefits derived from “software automating software.” This talk will examine some of the history that led us to the point where current networking architectures are no longer viable for cloud computing at mega-scale. We’ll take a look at the basics of SDN and some of its key elements – OpenFlow, network virtualization, and orchestration – along with some of the initiatives and companies that are setting the stage for the next generation of networking.
This document discusses how intelligent session border controllers (SBCs) can help network operators meet challenges around network convergence, quality expectations, and profitability pressures. It outlines three key realities operators face: network convergence across services, networks and devices; demands for high quality of service; and declining revenues. Intelligent SBCs can provide insightful policy enforcement, holistic network visibility, and dynamic policy adaptation to help operators simplify, scale and secure their networks in the face of these challenges. The document provides examples of how intelligent SBC capabilities such as normalization, session management and routing can help operators manage traffic more efficiently while improving security, interoperability and customer experience.
Complexity and Risk: Effective Business Community Management through Integrationjgatrell
Increased economic pressures and continuous changes in market dynamics businesses need to make decisions in real-time based on information from their suppliers and business partners. Global business communities are often at risk without visibility into key indicators which can impact their bottom line due to integration challenges within their back office and throughout the community.
This session will outline emerging trends and investments in managing business communities and illustrate how visibility integration and automation improved businesses execution. Real-time visibility will reduce the business impact from such events as compliance, charge backs, fulfillment or supplier rating issues caused by data quality issues and limited visibility due to integration gaps. These events can drastically stall the order-to-cash lifecycle and impact customer relationships.
The document discusses two key market trends that Juniper is focused on: cloud computing and mobile internet. It notes that virtualization is not the same as cloud computing. The cloud delivers services over the network and provides benefits like elasticity, agility, and efficiency through dynamically shared resource pools. The document also discusses how the rise of mobility is redefining business practices and creating demand for more advanced data center capabilities, with data centers beginning to build cloud environments.

"Choosing proper type of scaling", Olena SyrotaFwdays
Imagine an IoT processing system that is already quite mature and production-ready and for which client coverage is growing and scaling and performance aspects are life and death questions. The system has Redis, MongoDB, and stream processing based on ksqldb. In this talk, firstly, we will analyze scaling approaches and then select the proper ones for our system.
How information systems are built or acquired puts information, which is what they should be about, in a secondary place. Our language adapted accordingly, and we no longer talk about information systems but applications. Applications evolved in a way to break data into diverse fragments, tightly coupled with applications and expensive to integrate. The result is technical debt, which is re-paid by taking even bigger "loans", resulting in an ever-increasing technical debt. Software engineering and procurement practices work in sync with market forces to maintain this trend. This talk demonstrates how natural this situation is. The question is: can something be done to reverse the trend?
