3. How to Add Fractions
Your equation is 3 1/2 +5 4/9
First, you have to change the denominators to the LCM
of 2 and 9.
So now the numbers are 3 9/18 +5 8/18
Add it, but don’t add the denominators.
So your answer is 8 17/18!
It’s the same steps for every one.
4. How to Subtract Fractions
The steps for subtracting fractions is almost the same for adding
fractions, but its’ just subtracting.
So your equation is 5 4/9 -3 1/2
Do the same as before, and find the LCM of the denominators
So now the equation is 5 8/18 -3 9/18
It doesn’t work, so turn the 5 into a 4 and add the 18 to the 8.
So NOW the equation is 4 26/18 -3 9/18
Subtract it but not the denominator, and now the answer is 1
7/18!
5. How to Multiply Fractions
Multiplying and dividing fractions are different from adding and
subtracting fractions
Your equation is 3 1/2 x5 4/9
First, change all the mixed numbers to improper fractions
So now the equation is 7/2 x49/9
It’ll be better if I draw it like this:
If you can simplify it, then do it. But here there are no numbers to
simplify, so just multiply it.
So the answer is: 343/18. Switch it to a mixed number so now it is 19
1/18!
6. Dividing Fractions
Dividing fractions are a bit like multiplying
fractions:
So the equation is , so you have to change the
equation to multiplication. How? Change the second
fraction around so if it is 49/9, then change it to 9/49.
So now it is 7/2 x9/49. You do the same thing as
multiplying to see if you can simplify the units.
The answer is 9/14!
