Adding: When adding unlike denominator
fractions it will look like this: ex: 1/5+6/8. To add
unlike denominator fractions you have to find the
most common denominator and you get that by
multiplying 5 and 8 which equals 40. So then what
ever you did to the bottom you have to do to the
top so you times 1 and 8 and times 5 and 6. So
now the fraction is 8/40+30/40 now you can add.
So you just add the tops together and don’t do
anything to the bottom. The answer is 38/40 if the
numerator is bigger you make it into a mixed
fraction. EX: 21/10 would be 2 1/10. We also have
to reduce the answer so 38/40 what can divide
into both numbers if there is no number then you
leave it. 2 divides into both numbers so now it will
be 19/20 it is simplified.
Subtract: When subtracting fractions with unlike
denominators it will be like this 5/8-3/10 so you
have to find the most common denominator to
do this you have to multiply 8 and 10 that
equals: 80 so the denominator is 80. What you
do to the bottom you do bottom you do to the
top. So 5x10=50 and 8x3=24. The fraction would
be 50/80-24/80=26/80. Now you can reduce it. It
is 13/40
Multiplying: When multiplying fractions it looks like this 1/5x2/6.
To find the answer you don’t need to make it into a common
denominator. You just multiply the numerator by the numerator
and the denominator by the denominator. It will be 2/30. So
when it is like this 3x5/7 it would be the same because you
make the 3 into 3/1 it is the same thing then you multiply.
3/1x5/7=15/7 that is improper so you make it mixed: 2 1/7.
When multiplying fractions like this: 4 2/3x 1 1/4 it is different so
first you times the denominator by the whole so 3x4=12 then
add the numerator 12+2=14 so now it is 14/3 Then do the same
to the other number. 4x1=4 4+1=5 so 5/4. Then it is now
14/3x5/4=70/12=6 2/12.
Dividing: When dividing fractions it
looks like this 1/3 divided by 1/4. So
you times 3 and 4 which equals 12
and times 1x4=4 and 1x3=3. So
4/12x3/12. Then you have to flip the
second fraction. So now it is
4/12x12/3= 48/36=1 12/36 and that
simplified is 1 1/3.
