The document summarizes audience feedback from 10 women aged 15-30 on an opening sequence for a film project. It includes 5 questions about how well the music fit the atmosphere, the appropriate length, how well the main character was portrayed, how suitable the camera work and editing were for a mystery romance genre, and whether the sequence would make them want to continue watching the film. Several quotes from participants are provided for each question that generally provide positive feedback but also some constructive criticism on making the portrayal less stereotypical or the sequence less long.
Knowing stuff makes it hard to imagine what it's like not to know stuff. In 1990 Elizabeth Newton carried out an experiment assigning participants to the role of either 'tapper' or 'listener'. Tappers had to tap out a tune and predict the likelihood of the listener guessing the tune correctly. Tappers were much more confident that listeners would guess correctly than was actually the case.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
2. Introduction
In order to be able to critically evaluate and assess my work I have decided to
conduct a short research and see what my target audience thinks about an
opening sequence to my film. This would help me notice mistakes and faults
that I might have missed. It would be useful to hear someone’s opinion ‘from
the side’, meaning someone who wasn’t involved in this task from the
beginning and to hear what they think about it.
I have questioned 10 girls/women from 15 to 30 years old who either work in
an art industry, study it or are interested in it, therefore, this sample is
representative of my target audience.
3. 1. How well did music, do you think, fit the atmosphere of this opening
sequence? Rate it on the scale from 1 to 10, with 10 representing absolute
agreement
4. Some of the quotes of the research
participants related to the 1st question
‘I think it worked great!’
‘I believe it made the sequence look more aesthetic. It also helped develop a
character better, for example, when an artists rushes with the work the music
gets faster.’
‘I am not sure. If the sequence if supposed to represent a crazy, passionate
artist working on her masterpiece maybe the music should have been more
fast – paced.’
5. 2. In terms of length, do you think the opening sequence was
a) too short
b) long enough
c) too long
6. Some of the quotes of the research
participants related to the 2nd question
‘Even though it is 2 and a half minutes long, it kept my attention till the end.’
‘I don’t think the length matters as much, but rather what is in the opening
sequence.’
‘I think it is too long and gets boring at some point’
7. 3. How well do you think does this opening sequence portrayers the main
character? Rate on this scale from 1 to 10, with 10 representing absolute
agreement
8. Some of the quotes of the research
participants related to the 3rd question
‘I think it portrays the artistic the nature of the main character very well’
‘It (opening sequence) suggests how passionate about her work she is, but
also tells us about her unhealthy habits.’
‘It is a quite stereotypical portrayal of an artist, not all artists are crazy
alcoholics!’
9. 4. If genre is mystery romance, how would you grade camera work and editing in
regard to the stated genre? Rate on the scale from 1 to 10, with 10 representing
absolute agreement
10. Some of the quotes of the research
participants related to the 4th question
‘I think the opening sequence is quite mysterious – the music and the fast –
paced shots in middle and a painting in the end, however I would never guess
this film is also a romance, probably it is to be found out later in the film.’
11. 5. Would this opening sequence pursue you to continue watching a film?
a) Yes
b) No
12. Some of the quotes of the research
participants related to the 5th question
‘Yes! The painting and music in the end are very intriguing.’
‘Definitely! The fact that the character’s full face wasn’t shown, makes it
even more interesting.’
‘No, I found the opening sequence way too long and boring, so even if I
continue watching it would be without much interest.’
