Abstract:
A research team that wants to validate a new IoT solution has to implement a testbed. It is a complex step
since it must provide a realistic environment, and this may require skills that are not present in the team. This
paper explores the requirements of an IoT testbed and proposes an open-source solution based on low-cost
and widely available components and technologies. The testbed implements an architecture consisting of a
collector managing several edge devices. Security levels and duty-cycle are tunable depending on the specific
application. After analyzing the testbed requirements, the paper illustrates a template that uses WiFi for the
link layer, HTTPS for structured communication, an ESP8266 board for edge units, and a RaspberryPi for the
collector.

For the past few decades, telecommunications networks have been built using closed-source monolithic products from network equipment vendors. Today, Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and Software Defined Networking (SDN) are disrupting the way telecommunications networks are being built and operated and are gradually becoming the foundation of modern networking. The introduction of virtualisation, automation and orchestration provides the basis from which the networks will evolve towards a Zero-touch Orchestration, Operations and Management (ZOOM) target.
This presentation highlights the prominent role of open source and Red Hat’s portfolio in the implementation of future networks.

ONAP and the K8s Ecosystem: A Converged Edge Application & Network Function P...Liz Warner
The edge computing industry is increasingly using cloud technologies for seamless migration of workloads across edges and clouds. For seamless mobility workloads, K8s is a key requirement for all CSPs. Also, K8s is can be a good workload orchestrator for all deployment types (VMs, containers and functions). This panel will discuss existing work and novel ways of realizing a converged network function & edge computing application platform across distributed clouds using the extensibility of the K8s ecosystem. This work is currently happening in ONAP as part of the Edge Automation effort and we see this impactful to other open source efforts such as Akraino, K8s Edge WG etc.

OpenConext, Open for Collaboration
A session at Open Apereo 2014 Conference in Miami
Date: June 3, 2014
Presenter: Niels van Dijk, SURFnet
In research and education, efficient ways for sharing data, content and functionality are paramount to meet modern collaboration needs. The availability of new collaboration services is growing quickly, offering new opportunities for users. However, this abundance of services creates an on-going challenge of integrating these into campus and collaboration infrastructures.
To engage this demanding field, the Dutch National Research and Education Network (NREN) SURFnet created an open source middleware suite for building collaborative platforms: OpenConext. The platform combines federated identity management, federated groups, portals and distributed applications to deliver services.
For further information on the platform and its use, see the 3 minute animation at https://www.openconext.org/
Users attending this session will learn more about the possibilities of OpenConext, the OpenConext roadmap and in what way one can participate in the community: OpenConext is open for collaboration!
Ildikó Váncsa, Chris Price, and Carsten Rossenhövel's presentation at the 2017 Open Networking Summit.
Communications service providers (CSPs) have a wide range of options when building virtualized services from the ground up including multiple choices for each functional block in the ETSI NFV reference architecture. CSPs prefer heterogeneous systems with building blocks from different vendors including open source software; for such deployments interoperability becomes a crucial requirement.
OpenStack, as the NFVI and VIM, serves as a widely used cloud platform for telecom and NFV use cases. As a common base, OpenStack offers the means for vendors and other open source projects to ease the interoperability challenge by providing a set of open API’s while focusing on upgradeability and backward compatibility.
However, when it comes to productization, interoperability testing often falls short and is sometimes left to the carrier as shown by the testing programs actively run by no fewer than 10 organizations today.
Join Carsten Rossenhövel from the European Advanced Networking Test Center (EANTC) and the rapporteur (editor) of ETSI’s NFV interoperability standards, Ildikó Váncsa from the OpenStack Foundation, and Chris Price, Ericsson and OpenStack board director to learn more about
The ETSI NFV Release 2 interoperability testing activities - standardization and recently completed ETSI PlugTest. Over 40 commercial and open source implementations were tested for interoperability, including 20 virtual network functions, 10 management and orchestration solutions and 10 NFV platforms.
The New IP Agency (NIA) interoperability testing campaigns of commercial NFV implementations executed by EANTC, focusing on results, lessons learned and recommendations.
How vendors and open source projects are stepping up to the challenge, realizing they must work together.
How to stay up-to-date with OpenStack releases and the community.
How to get involved to ensure you are aware of the latest developments and contribute what you need to OpenStack.
What will I learn from attending this session?
CSPs, open source projects and vendors alike will learn more about the recent ETSI PlugTest and NIA-commissioned interoperability testing, their results and how to architect full NFV solutions that will work together. Interoperability API tests and associated marks from OpenStack will be covered, as well as features to help stay current on OpenStack releases. Attendees will also hear from Ericsson about a vendor’s point of view, and how other projects such a OPNFV are evolving and expanding in scope to address this challenge.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
