► Managing large distributed systems in a
scalable and flexible way
► Separation of the rules that govern the
system’s behavior from their functionality
► Policy = Behavior
► Problems:
▪ Complexity of large scale network;
conflicting and/or inconsistent
policies needs to be handled and
solved in advance
▪ Policy Decision Point (PDP) is
equivalent to a rule-based control-
loop
▪ PDP must actively monitor the values
that pertain to all the variables
referred to in all the conditions in the
configured policies

The network slice is a composition of adequately configured network functions, network applications, and the
underlying cloud infrastructure (physical, virtual or even emulated resources, RAN resources etc.), that are
bundled together to meet the requirements of a specific use case, e.g., bandwidth, latency, processing, and
resiliency, coupled with a business purpose.
