This document defines and describes the key components of an online learning environment (OLE). It explains that an OLE provides enabling contexts to orient learners to problems, resources to support learning, and tools for seeking, collecting, organizing and sharing information. It also discusses different types of enabling contexts, resources, tools and scaffolds that support learning efforts in an OLE. Specifically, it outlines externally imposed, externally induced and individually generated contexts, static and dynamic resources, and conceptual, metacognitive, procedural and strategic scaffolds. The document also provides a brief introduction to the concept of bring your own technology (BYOT) policies and some related considerations around BYOT security and IT consumerization.
