OGPL: History
During the visit of the US President to India in November 2010, the Prime Minister of India
and the US President agreed to work together to exercise global leadership in support of
open government
The leaders launched a US-India Open Government Dialogue to promote access to
information, energize civic engagement, support global initiatives in this area and share
expertise with each other.
Under this initiative, an Open Government
Platform (OGPL) was launched to be developed
as a joint product by India (lead by the Office
of Adviser to the PM) and the United States to
promote transparency and greater citizen
engagement by making more government
data, documents, tools and processes publicly
available. The aim was to use the best
practices of India.gov.in & data.gov in the US.
The OGPL is now ready for use and is also
being offered to interested third countries.

Data.Gov.in: India’s Open
Government Portal
 India’s open government portal is ready and can be accessed at
http://data.gov.in
 It has been developed by the National Informatics Centre
 Currently there are around 2000 datasets from various
Government Ministries and Departments on the portal
 The portal will be further enriched by the launch of the National
Data Sharing and Accessibility Policy (NDSAP) of the Government
of India which was gazette notified on 17th March 2012
 NDSAP mandates all Ministries/Departments to release maximum
possible datasets (non-sensitive) in the public domain
