Money Matters
• 53.2% of students spent more than $301 on
textbooks, and 17.9% spent more than $500 in
spring 2016 Florida Virtual Campus | Distance Learning & Student
Services | www.dlss.flvc.org
• Morgan State University study showed that 10% of
students dropping out for financial reasons owed
the University less than $1000.

• Used/rentals/ebooks don’t solve the problem. Used
textbooks are undermined by new editions, rentals
create a system where we remove books from
learners. Expiration dates, print limits, etc.

OER: Gratis & Libre
Open Educational Resources
(OER) are teaching, learning,
and research resources that
reside in the public domain or
have been released under an
intellectual property license
that permits their free use and
repurposing by others. Open
educational resources include
full courses, course materials,
modules, textbooks, streaming
videos, tests, software, and
any other tools, materials, or
techniques used to support
access to knowledge.

Now what
does this
mean for us as
SCHOLARS?

Open Education
Teaching: Open Pedagogy is how we connect students to
the public and empower them to shape their future world.
Scholarship: Open Access (OA) is how we allow the
academy’s research to work for the public good, and how
we help the public to engage with and influence our
contributions.
Service: Open Educational Resources (OER) are one of
the ways we relieve the financial burden on the most
vulnerable members of the educational system—
students—and are part of a larger commitment to making
public education work for the public.
