We are excited to be holding our own GIS Day event on November 19th, 2014!
GIS Day is a global grassroots educational event that enables Geographic Information Systems (GIS) users and vendors to showcase real-world applications of GIS to schools, businesses, and the general public. Organizations that utilize GIS around the world participate by holding or sponsoring an event of their own.
The first formal GIS Day took place in 1999. In 2005, more than 700 GIS Day events were held in 74 countries around the globe. Esri president and co-founder Jack Dangermond credits Ralph Nader with inspiring the creation of GIS Day. He saw GIS Day as providing an opportunity for the world to learn about the uses of GIS in mapping geography, and what that mapping technology could provide. He wanted GIS Day to be a grassroots effort and open to everyone to participate.
Recognizing the power that GIS technology could provide for healthcare, eHealth Africa as an NGO organization stepped to the forefront of using GIS applications to track polio in Nigeria. Using GIS technology, eHealth is able to map out areas previously unreached during immunization campaigns. Once the area is mapped, much-needed polio vaccinations are able to be distributed and the polio epidemic is brought another step closer to being controlled and eliminated.
The theme of GIS Day is “Discovering the world through GIS.” GIS Day provides an international forum for users of GIS technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society and around the world.
We are excited to take part in GIS Day 2014 on November 19th. We look forward to joining with our community partners in discussing GIS usage, and to take a close look at the exciting contributions GIS provides around our world.

A presentation at EUROGEO 2021 to illustrate innovation in education through the projects which EUROGEO, as a Belgian NGO, is involved in. The presentation examines the links between knowledge transfer and innovation and the process that the organisation has been going through. The role of Geography in climate education: science and active citizenship
“Climate change concerns all of us, and everyone can take action for the climate” (European Commission, 2020). Our planet is experiencing significant and accelerated change caused by greenhouse gases emitted by human activities. We are gathering significant scientific data looking to understand and then seek solutions to the issue. The effects of climate are being felt on all continents and are predicted to become more and more intense, with severe consequences for our economies and societies.
To stop climate change from getting worse, the European Commission confirmed we must take urgent climate action so that we can adapt to the changes happening now, and in the future, to limit the damage. The European Commission has established an “Education for Climate” initiative which promotes education for and about climate change as a flagship initiative of the European Education Area. Developing relevant, high-quality teaching in schools will be fundamental for the future.
EUROGEO responded by sharing its experience and expertise in developing and promoting a series of innovative educational projects to help empower teachers and educators to establish active citizenship approaches, embracing scientific studies through geographical education.
This presentation establishes the framework of the EC “Education for Climate” initiative and share the tools and resources generated, including data dashboards and training materials (Teaching the Future project), an e-Book and application (MyEcoTrack), a teacher MOOC using GIS in teaching about climate (GIS-T) a teaching resource gallery (GeoDem), training resources of GEA (Growing into Eco-conscious adults) and an initial teacher education climate curriculum (TECCHED).

Psarrou Taxiarchoula is a geographer and Ph.D. candidate in marine science at the University of the Aegean. She has a B.Sc. in social studies and geography from the University of the Aegean, an M.Sc. in cultural informatics and communication, and is currently working on a Ph.D. thesis developing methods to quantitatively assess marine eutrophication using GIS. She has work experience in research, education, and as a census worker, and teaches physics, maths, and computer science.

The rapid advancement in spatial data collection, storage, and management technologies in recent decades has resulted in the development of sizable spatial data infrastructures particularly in the Public Sector. Those infrastructures, due to initiatives, such as the NSDI in the US and the INSPIRE in the European Union, have become available to scientists and professionals at a very broad range of disciplines. Indeed, scientists and professionals, nowadays, find themselves with an abundance of geospatial data that they may use to answer important research questions and cope with everyday economic and societal problems. However, advancements in spatial data infrastructures have not been coupled with equivalent advancements in geographical methods and techniques. In fact, most methods and techniques used so far in geographical analysis are based on models and approaches that have been developed before the advent of detailed, comprehensive, and large scale spatial data sets. Those methods and techniques were based, most of the times, on gross approximations and spatial aggregations of geographical phenomena in order to conform, at the time of their development, to the scale and detail at which spatial data were available. The result of such approximations and generalizations, however, was that the outcomes of the relevant spatial analyses were not fine tuned to the problems they aimed to solve and lacked the realism that would make them useful in real world situations. Now, with the availability of detailed and comprehensive spatial data, new horizons in geographical analysis and research are opened. Phenomena can be recorded and represented at a very fine level of detail and be analyzed in a very comprehensive manner. Thus, precision of analyses and realism of outcomes could be increased, improving, thus, the usefulness and impact of geographical analyses in real world situations. However, in order for this to happen, it is necessary, first, to re-engineer the various existing spatial analyses methods and techniques in order to fine-tune them to the levels of detail and the characteristics of the available spatial data. In this presentation, we would elaborate on this issue and on how availability of detailed spatial data may be used to boost development of advanced geographical methods and techniques that would help us in explaining geographical phenomena and in solving spatial problems. Particular “use cases” would be analyzed based on the cadastral spatial data infrastructure that is, currently, under development by Hellenic Cadastre and which would become available to geographers and other scientists and professionals in the forthcoming future.

The rapid advancement in spatial data collection, storage, and management technologies in recent decades has resulted in the development of sizable spatial data infrastructures particularly in the Public Sector. Those infrastructures, due to initiatives, such as the NSDI in the US and the INSPIRE in the European Union, have become available to scientists and professionals at a very broad range of disciplines. Indeed, scientists and professionals, nowadays, find themselves with an abundance of geospatial data that they may use to answer important research questions and cope with everyday economic and societal problems. However, advancements in spatial data infrastructures have not been coupled with equivalent advancements in geographical methods and techniques. In fact, most methods and techniques used so far in geographical analysis are based on models and approaches that have been developed before the advent of detailed, comprehensive, and large scale spatial data sets. Those methods and techniques were based, most of the times, on gross approximations and spatial aggregations of geographical phenomena in order to conform, at the time of their development, to the scale and detail at which spatial data were available. The result of such approximations and generalizations, however, was that the outcomes of the relevant spatial analyses were not fine tuned to the problems they aimed to solve and lacked the realism that would make them useful in real world situations. Now, with the availability of detailed and comprehensive spatial data, new horizons in geographical analysis and research are opened. Phenomena can be recorded and represented at a very fine level of detail and be analyzed in a very comprehensive manner. Thus, precision of analyses and realism of outcomes could be increased, improving, thus, the usefulness and impact of geographical analyses in real world situations. However, in order for this to happen, it is necessary, first, to re-engineer the various existing spatial analyses methods and techniques in order to fine-tune them to the levels of detail and the characteristics of the available spatial data. In this presentation, we would elaborate on this issue and on how availability of detailed spatial data may be used to boost development of advanced geographical methods and techniques that would help us in explaining geographical phenomena and in solving spatial problems. Particular “use cases” would be analyzed based on the cadastral spatial data infrastructure that is, currently, under development by Hellenic Cadastre and which would become available to geographers and other scientists and professionals in the forthcoming future.

This new reality found most teachers, unprepared to adapt their teaching.
In order to help address this, the ONLIFE project aims to develop a methodology which will support the life adaptability of teachers in the online teaching process in School Education so they can have hybrid competences as teachers.

What is Onlife?

The information era, along with the technologization process, makes it difficult to avoid the use of technological devices and the hyperconnectivity that they entail. In recent years, advances in technology have generated a considerable and extensive wave of changes and transformations in all areas of life, including the self. In the case of young people, the effects of this hyperconnectivity are being experienced with greater intensity since they are in the middle of their identity development. Hence, digital devices may be influencing the identity definition of our younger generations.
GEOLAND Presentation UN-GGIM
The GEOLAND Project was presented at the United Nations as part of the twelfth session of the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM). The meeting was held from 3 – 5 August 2022.
GEOLAND deals with the concepts, data, tools and technologies concerning the monitoring of landscapes based on the rules of the European Landscape Convention (ELC). As a result the project aims to inform and advise students and their professors concerning the policy implications of undertaking landscape monitoring and assessment. GEOLAND will help students and professors to comprehend the problems that arise from heterogeneous applications of ELC and suggest possible solutions to these issues.
The GEOLAND project also seeks to reinforce European Policy in landscape conservation as well as national and local actions regarding the implementation of the European Landscape Convention.
It will seek to provide essential recommendations for policy makers and maintain a dialogue with relevant stakeholders, open for future development. The methodology employed is eventually expected to constitute a road map for relevant studies not only in Europe but also worldwide.
UN-GGIM is the relevant inter-governmental body on geospatial information in the United Nations, UN-GGIM reports on all matters relating to geography, geospatial information and related topics to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.

Linear Measurements: Instruments used. Linear Measurement by Tape, Ranging out Survey Lines and overcoming Obstructions; Measurements on sloping ground; Tape corrections, conventional symbols. Angular Measurements: Instruments used; Introduction to Compass Surveying, Bearings and Longitude & Latitude of a Line, Introduction to total station.
Levelling: Instrument used Object of levelling, Methods of levelling in brief, and Contour maps.
Chapter 4
Buildings: Selection of site for Buildings, Layout of Building Plan, Types of buildings, Plinth area, carpet area, floor space index, Introduction to building byelaws, concept of sun light & ventilation. Components of Buildings & their functions, Basic concept of R.C.C., Introduction to types of foundation

Transportation: Introduction to Transportation Engineering; Traffic and Road Safety: Types and Characteristics of Various Modes of Transportation; Various Road Traffic Signs, Causes of Accidents and Road Safety Measures.

Environmental Engineering: Environmental Pollution, Environmental Acts and Regulations, Functional Concepts of Ecology, Basics of Species, Biodiversity, Ecosystem, Hydrological Cycle; Chemical Cycles: Carbon, Nitrogen & Phosphorus; Energy Flow in Ecosystems.
Water Pollution: Water Quality standards, Introduction to Treatment & Disposal of Waste Water. Reuse and Saving of Water, Rain Water Harvesting.
