Introduction
A textbook is a book containing a comprehensive compilation of content
in a branch of study with the intention of the explaining it. Text book are
produced to meet the needs of educators usually at educational institutions.
School book are textbooks and other books used in schools. Today many
textbooks are published in both print and digital formats.
A textbook is a specially written book which contains selective and
systematic knowledge rewarding the curriculum material prescribed. Every
care is taken to maintain coherence and sequence in the presentation of
information and learning activities. The textbook is said to be “the teacher in
point”
A textbook differs from an ordinary book mainly on the basis that it is
basically studen5 friendly and also reflects the anticipated instructional goal
teaching – learning techniques etc.
Definition
Bacon defined “textbook as a book designed for classroom use carefully
prepared by experts in the field and equipped with the usual teaching devices.
Textbooks indispensable in social science.
Good textbook are insuperablefor the study and teaching of socialscience for
the following reasons.
1. As a quiet to the pupil
2. As an aid to the teacher
3. To give the minimum essential knowledge in a single source.
4. As a tool for self-learning
5 to providematerial in a logical and comprehensivemanner.
6. To ensureuniformity to the expected standard.
7. To providea base from which both the teacher and pupils may start
and continue to work.
8. To provideboth confirmation and sustenance
9. To rectify the limitations of the classroomsituation in most of the
Indian schools.
10. To ensureintellectual rapportand a likeness of people.
Cautions in the use of textbook.
1. Textbook to be subsidiary and supplementary, not primary and
fundamental.
2. Reading the textbook aloud in the class useful to read aloud a passage
of special importance or difficulty. In that case, it is best read by the teacher,
otherwise reading aloud is a waste of time.
3. The teacher should not be more uncritical mouthpiece of what is
contained in the textbook.
4. Do not expect pupil to know how to get the most out of text is
without help.
5. Do not use textbook as a means of a routing handbook.
Advantages of textbook.
1. Textbook can be great help in the planning of courses, units and
lessons.
2. They provide an organisation or structure for the course.
3. They provide information about other reading, sources of information,
audio-visual and other aids, and other teaching materials and tools.
4. Textbook can be used as a basic reading and as a launching pad for
further activities such as discursion and research activities.
Disadvantages.
1.They are usually dull.
2. In this method, various method and principles of teaching ss cannot
be employed and thus a textbook abstracts the teaching process.
3. Become the students are fed on the subjectmatter of one textbook,
the outlook of the students become narrow.
4. Because of role learning in the textbook method the student develop
the habitat of cramming which humbles the growths of intelligence.
Conclusion
A textbook is a book containing a comprehensive compilation of
content in a branch of study with the intention of the explaining. The
text book differs from an ordinary book mainly on the basis that it is
basically students friendly and also reflects the anticipated instructional
goals teaching learning teaching etc.
A book used by a student in which answers and workings may be
entered besides questions and exercise.

  • 4. Introduction A textbook is a book containing a comprehensive compilation of content in a branch of study with the intention of the explaining it. Text book are produced to meet the needs of educators usually at educational institutions. School book are textbooks and other books used in schools. Today many textbooks are published in both print and digital formats. A textbook is a specially written book which contains selective and systematic knowledge rewarding the curriculum material prescribed. Every care is taken to maintain coherence and sequence in the presentation of information and learning activities. The textbook is said to be “the teacher in point” A textbook differs from an ordinary book mainly on the basis that it is basically studen5 friendly and also reflects the anticipated instructional goal teaching – learning techniques etc.

  • 6. Cautions in the use of textbook. 1. Textbook to be subsidiary and supplementary, not primary and fundamental. 2. Reading the textbook aloud in the class useful to read aloud a passage of special importance or difficulty. In that case, it is best read by the teacher, otherwise reading aloud is a waste of time. 3. The teacher should not be more uncritical mouthpiece of what is contained in the textbook. 4. Do not expect pupil to know how to get the most out of text is without help. 5. Do not use textbook as a means of a routing handbook. Advantages of textbook. 1. Textbook can be great help in the planning of courses, units and lessons. 2. They provide an organisation or structure for the course. 3. They provide information about other reading, sources of information, audio-visual and other aids, and other teaching materials and tools. 4. Textbook can be used as a basic reading and as a launching pad for

In this method, various method and principles of teaching ss cannot be employed and thus a textbook abstracts the teaching process. 3. Because of role learning in the textbook method the student develop the habitat of cramming which humbles the growths of intelligence.
