2. Need & importance of mathematics text books
NEED & IMPORTANCE OF TEXTBOOKS
Introduction
Text books are the most widely used of all instructional collections of the
subject matter that has been prescribed for a particular stage. They are prepared to suit
the age level of the learners concerned. In the textbook subject matter is presented in a
well planned way to facilitate learning of new ideas in an effective manner.
Traditionally, a textbook of mathematics has been an unavoidable instrument in
teaching - learning. There fore, the textbooks are considered as essential for learning,
as the key of knowledge. Textbook of mathematics is an essential aid and has
occupied a pivotal role in mathematics education. A text book helps in systematic sing
teaching and learning. In a textbook the content is organized in a systematic and
specific manner. It gives direction to the class work and help in evaluating pupil’s
progress. Thus a textbook is useful for both pupils and teachers. It influences the
nature of the teaching learning situations in a classroom…… The textbooks of
mathematics is aimed at exposing the course of study organized according to a set
plan. It may be considered as a learning guide rather than a source book of
information. The role of the textbooks of mathematics can be realized only if the
mathematics teacher supplements it by his oral exposition, by reference reading, and
by all types of illustrations.
MATHEMATICS TEXTBOOKS
Textbooks occupy a key position in the modern system of education. Education
is a tripolar process the poles being the teacher, the student and the content. The
content is an intervening variable. It help in the interaction between the teacher and
the taught. A teacher cannot proceed successfully without the help of properly
exposed content. In textbooks the content or subject matter is presented in a
systematic manner to satisfy the needs of the teacher as well as students. A textbook is
helpful to the teaching-learning process.
3. I. Importance for the teachers
A good mathematics text books is not only a lucid tool for the pupils;
but also a tool in the hands of a mathematics teacher. A teacher uses the
textbook to fulfill the following needs.
1. For comprehending the subject matter
Prescribed as the curriculum : A textbook suggests the scope of the subject
matter expected by the syllabus. It also provides a number of good illustrations
and questions for exercise that could help the teacher master the subject matter.
It helps the teacher not to waste time on irrelevant details.
2. As a reference material : Textbooks also server as a reference book to the
teacher and the students because it the most reliable source of information to
them. Textbooks are generally written by experienced teachers and references
are quoted about original sources of information. So, if required a teacher can
consult the original reference suggested in the textbook.
3. For assigning drill work and home work : Mathematics is subject that
essentially requires practice. Without practice this subject cannot be thoroughly
mastered. Unless the rules and formulas learnt are applied for solving
problems, they cannot be thoroughly mastered at the application level. So, a
text book normally provides a number of graded problems related to different
topic which in turn provide opportunity to the teachers for giving the learners
through and planned practice. A teacher can also assign homework and drill
work to the students in tune with the pattern suggested by the text books.
4. For planned and systematic teaching : A text book contains various topics in a
proper sequence. It also suggests the steps of planning, suitable method of
teaching and appropriate illustrative materials to the teacher. So, it helps the
teacher to teach in an organized and systematic way which makes teaching-
learning effective.
5. For guidance : Text book provides some important guidelines to the teachers
about the presentation of the topic in the class. It provides certain well
illustrated examples which work as guide to the teachers as well as to the
4. students. It also suggests possibilities of correlation and related project
activities.
6. For evaluation: Evaluation is an important part of education. Most of our
teachers are unable to construct a good achievement test. Text books helps in
the selectionand construction of various problems for a test.
ll. Importance for the students
Text books are very useful to students also. Without a text book a student is
like a mason without tools. At every step he requires the text book. The important
aspects of utility of text books to the students.
1. Helpful for self-study: Self-study of the topic by the students in advance is
helpful to the teacher in the development of lessons. It saves the time of the
teacher. Text books are also quite useful to those students who remain absent
from the class due to any reason.
2. Helpful in understanding the concepts: Sometimes students are unable to
understand the concepts and certain complex ideas exposed by the teacher in
the class. Text books help the student to understand such subject matter by
reading it again and again. Thus it makes things clear.
3. Helpful to use as per requirement and desire of the pupil: Text books play the
role of a teacher out of classroom. Text book also contain some solved
problems which are helpful to students in solving other similar problems. Thus,
a student can use the text book as per his requirement and desire.
4. Helpful for gifted children: Gifted children have more ability and capacity to
learn than their mediocre counterparts. They have the desire to learn more and
more. So, classroom teaching is not sufficient for them. The teacher cannot
guide such student in extra classes due to work load. In such a situation text
book is helpful to them.
5. Helpful to mentally retarded and backward children: Text books are most
useful to those children who cannot progress with other students in the class.
Such types of students are called backward children. They have to learn in tune
with their own pace because their speed of learning is slow. With the help of
text book they learn and proceed according to their capacity. Thus, the text
book helps them as a teacher at home.
Qualities of a good mathematics text book
A teacher of mathematics, while selecting a text book for making instruction effective
should ensure that it maintains certain qualities. Some qualities of a good text books in
mathematics is;
5. 1. The appearance of the text book should be appealing with an attractive cover
page.
2. It should have been written in accordance with the aims and objectives of
teaching the subject in that particular class.
3. It should be written in simple and easily understandable language and the
presentation should be within the grasp of the pupils.
4. It should relate classroom learning to the real life needs and physical social
environments of the learners.
5. It should make provision for recapitulation of the subject taught in previous
classes.
6. It should facilitate the use of analytic, synthetic, inductive, deductive, problem-
solving and heuristic approaches to learning.
7. It should organize the content in the increasing order of difficulty.
8. It should provide for individual differences.
CONCLUSION
Text books are very useful to teachers as well as to students. But, it is
valuable only when it is used in a proper way. The text book should not be used as the
only source of instructional material. It should be used as an aid in teaching, and not a
substitute for teaching. In mathematics, the aim of teaching is help the student in
arriving at solution of the problems and to discover related rules and formula. This can
materialize only if the teacher maintains the heuristic approach in the classroom, so
the use of text book only will not suffice. Thus text books should be taken as a means
and not an end itself. It should be used when pupils feel a real need to it. A good
textbook probably is the cheapest and reliable source of information. It also serves as
a reference book and teaching aid for the mathematics teacher.
