Teacher Educator Physical science
TEACHERS QUALITIES
The place were resource materials in teaching physical science are
available includes text books, laboratory and library. It is important to
remember that the resource materials of above three is important of the many
available to the science teacher.
Thusber and collecte suggested six criteria for choosing a good text
book. They are content, organization, literary style and valabal any,
illustrations, teaching, aids, mechanical make up and appearance.
Teachers handbook
The teachers hand book aims to helping the teacher to monitor the
programme. Handbook is a valuable teaching device suitable for a wide range
of interests and abilities. It contains list of teaching aids, summarization of
learning on exercise in organization, a medium for self expression, an
indication of progress and assignments of various kinds. A bibliography of
relevant books and journal should be included.
Advantages
1. It is a device for review work
2. It suggests the teacher to adopt appropriate strategies to teach every
topic
3. Findings the learnings experiences for each topic is easy
4. Tangible evidence for the progress of students
5. Work of the teacher is fostered.
6. Not easily available to all teachers.
Disadvantages
Teacher should from the habit of looking and referring the guide book
before going to class.
Reference books
Reference books are effective aids to learning students must be given
training in the use of reference books.
The teacher should bear in mind that the reference material should easily
comprehensible and readily available for the pupils.
Avantages
1. It supplements classroom instruction
2. It Insists in the pupils self study habits and a sprit of self effort
3. It helps the pupils to work out assignments
4. It assumes or stimulates scientific thinking and inculcates the
elements of scientific attitude eg. Dictionaries, year books, Animal
reports, Encyclopedia, history of science.
Work book for pupils
Work books vary greatly in content and organization. At one extreme
are work books that reprint pages of associated text books, replacing key
words with blanks that are to be fixed in by pupils after reading their texts. At
the other extreme are work books that make provision for many different types
of activities, forms for reporting data, diagrams to be labeled, blank spaces for
sketches and clippings suggestions for supplementary work, study guides for
reading assignments and self testing devices.
Sometimes in addition, the teacher is provided with pads of tests, one
per pupil, to be used in evaluating pupil, to be used in evaluating pupil
achievement. Work books of the better type serve as a combined course of
study, of study guide and a record book.
Advantages
1. Heavily burdened teachers find the better work books useful in
saving time and energy
2. Help pupils who is working under self direction to study more
effectively.
3. Pupils who have missed time because of illness or from having left
school prematurely can make up work with out close supervision.
4. The beginning teacher and the inadequately prepared teacher also
find work books of value.
5. It fosters scientific thinking.
Disadvantages
1. Work books are relatively inflexible
2. The content is highly organized and cannot be altered easily. There is
little provision for the inclusion of new materials.
3. Work books are directed towards uniform outcomes, if they dominate
the program pupils have little opportunity to develop special interest and
talents.
4. Workbooks deny pupils any participation in the planning process.
Supplementary readers
Reading of supplementary readers is a method of introducing students an up to
date information and of meeting varied interests and needs of the pupils.
· Good supplementary readers in science will serve to stimulate
additional in the same related topic.
· Students can compare different authors and readings on the
same topic and this will develop a critical attitude in pupils.
More over extra reading helps the pupils intellectual potentialities,
extend and deepen their scientific interests and cultivate the traits of
scientific attitude.
Advantages
1. Stimulates scientific interests in the pupils
2. Supplements and integrates the classroom learnings
3. Includes self study habits and promotes independent reading
4. Strengthens linquistic ability
5. Develop literacy testes.
Resource unit in science refers to a huge collection of science materials
and activities related to a particular topic. Over dependence upon the
text book for instance limit the resource materials to the advantages
possessed by the text and exclude the advantages unique for
experiments.
CONCLUSION
Printed materials they being an essential part of science curricula
play a vital role in teaching and learning. Text books are the most
widely used of instructional materials. Now a days text book has
become a course of study, a set of unit plans and a learning guide as
well. A text book is an economical device for teachers and students as it
gives direction and saves time and energy. A text book should really
designed for the pupils rather than the teacher. They can help pupils
learn how to learn. Therefore, it is important that text books do not
prove to be mere suppliers of information. The text books should
stimulate reflective thinking and cultivate in students the scientific
attitude.
